So someone asked me, when Katie is older (like 6-7) what kind of dog I would get her, if she is enjoying Jr handling. Honestly I have no idea. What would you think?

Something smaller that she can handle, but NO toy breeds. Just not my thing. Something that doesnt require alot of grooming.

I was thinking a Whippet, since I love them and they seem to fit. Although she may have a hard time with OB if she chose to do it.

Shiba's are to much for a little kid IMO. Basenji, may be a posibility IF I could find the right breeder.

JRT you cant show. Not CKC reconised so she couldnt even do Jr's with it. As for a Schnauzer, the grooming to have a show ready coat is to much for a kid, and I dont want to do it. Plus if she wants to show a dog she needs to groom it herself. Thats my rule if ANY Jr takes one of my dogs.

hmm...
I like bostons terriers a lot :) a kid comes with one to romeo's obedience class, amazing little duo!

French bulldogs are also small, shortcoats, and just cute as buttons!

I like the whippet idea, or maybe a crestie?

American eskimo? They're pretty fun dudes. I guess they have a lot of coat too though.

Beagle? :p

Aurelia has already informed me several times that she would like her own "chi-chi-huahua" :rofl1:

I guess I'd wait and see what she's like as she gets older. She might have the perfect personality for some of the sharper spitzy dogs and find herself drawn to them. Then again, she might go for the softer toy dogs. Who knows?

Edit: What about a toller?

I agree with Romy. I would let her grow up and see what she likes as well as what she would be able to handle. I know when Josie was about that age, she wasn't particularly confident with dogs and our shelties were even too much for her to handle at times. (Well, Nikki was too sharp and strong, Trey just kind of stood there). So since Rose is such a soft, easygoing dog, she's been absolutely perfect for Josie's first dog of 'her own'.

When I was a kid and about that age I wanted nothing more than a rough collie. My parents took that into account and also took into account what they were willing to have (no large dogs) so we ended up with the shelties. I think that's a good way to do it, personally. Don't get something you know won't work but also let the kid have some input.

Or she may not even want a dog by then, who knows?

Emily begged and begged and begged for a chihuahua as a kid. My parents got her... Trey.

I guess neither one of us got our childhood dream dogs but now I don't want a collie ever and she doesn't want a chihuahua ever so I guess it worked out. :lol-sign:

I was actually going to suggest a Beagle or a smooth Collie. Depending on what size range your going for.

Ummmmm, BEAGLE?!? Lol sounds perfect to me. I don't think a german pinscher would be too "sharp" for a kid. Boston Terrier also might be a good choice, a JRT I think would be too much for a kid to handle with out a LOT of help and supervision from the parents (At home as well)

Beagle would be my first choice...or a dachshund?

Whippets are popular Jrs dogs. I'd say something that requires stacking so she can show off her abilities - nothing worse than a self-stacking breed (like the Collie) ... if the judges don't accept the fact they are supposed to self stack and they shouldn't be hand stacked, then they ignore the jr with the nicely placed dog and go with the child with the hand stacked dog.

I like Manchester Terriers (standard, not toy) ... smart, not dog aggressive, table stacked (to show off abilities) and very striking in the ring. :)

After living with whippets I would not say its a great match for a child. They can be flighty and weenie as well as stressy. (even the good ones can be) They might be an ok dog to show, (as a stressed whippet 'look' better in the ring) but might not be a good match as a childs pet.

But I agree with the see what she wants. Darien had wanted a bc since he was 4. So he has one and Sport is the perfect dog for him. I think shelties would be good. And a single sheltie is not the same as living in a house full of them. (whippets can be every bit as high and loud as shelties, really they can lol.) Why not a beagle? They are so great with kids.

(I would stay away from tollers for a child that age, unless you were just borrowing one for showing purposes. If you would get your child a bc then perhaps consider a toller)

I'd wait and see what she shows interest in. When I was a kid I was totally obsessed with dogs. I'd sit down and read breed books for hours, learning all about the different dogs out there. And after I was finished that, I'd read books about dog care and training, LOL. By the time I was around 7 I knew exactly what I wanted (Toller). My parents were skeptical of getting me my own dog, though. My first dog ended up being a Dachshund (Jesse), but they didn't actually get Jesse for me, they got her as a family dog, and she for some reason decided that she was mine. So I had to wait a long time to get the dog I really wanted, but it worked out! Jesse and I were inseperable and I learned a lot with and from her.

You guys have gave me good options to think about. I have a while yet. ;)

I thought about a beagle, and it would REALLY depend on the dog. Emma would NOT have been good for a Jr. If she was Reg I would have only put her in with verry experianced Jrs. She was strong, stuborn and way over excited in the ring. Most of the beagles I know, have alot of drive so would not be good either.
