"3-Year-Old Killed By Pit Bull
Officer Shoots Dog In Self-Defense

POSTED: 10:25 am EDT July 23, 2008

JACKSON, Miss. -- Jackson police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who was mauled to death by a pit bull.

The incident happened at 112 Maple Ridge St. shortly before 9 p.m Tuesday, reported WAPT-TV in Jackson.

Police said prior to the fatal attack, the toddler wandered into the carport where the pit bull was chained up.

Officials said the toddler lived at 109 Maple Ridge and was reportedly playing with the neighbor's children at the time of the incident.

Police said the dog was so dangerous that when police arrived at the scene an officer had to shoot the dog in self-defense. The pit bull survived the shooting and was recovered by the Animal Control Unit.

This is not the first case of a dog mauling a child in recent history in Jackson. In November a 7-year-old boy was mauled by a pit bull at a neighbor's house. The boy survived and had to get stitches.

A decision to euthanize the pit bull will be made once an investigation has been completed.

The owners of the dog in this new case have been questioned but no charges have been filed. "

Tradgedy, but....

WHY was the toddler unattended in the first place? I place a lot of blame on the child's parents or guardians. And why was a toddler wandering around - UNATTENDED - at neatly 9pm at night?

Who knows why the dog dd it - was it too dark for the dog to see the toddler clearly? Did the toddler run into the garage and jump on the dog? Is the dog "leash aggressive"? We'll never know. But the dog was contained - the toddler had to walk onto private property for this incident to occur.

Which makes me repet the question... where the heck were the adults watching this kid?

Thank you sizzledog! That is exactly what I was thinking.. Plus the child lives on a even address and the dog was on a odd. That means the 3 year old crossed the street as well..

Not necessarily. He may have been visiting with the neighbors kids at that address prior to the incident.

I know but my stars.. When my daughter was 3 no way would be she be anywhere without me.. I am not dismissing the owner of the dog, but why wasn't someone watching the child? The child went into a yard neighbor to where the child was playing. Why wasn't someone watching the child?

cops seem to be shooting dogs right and left. contained dogs at that.

and yet another good reason to not leave your dog chained and unattended. you never know what situation he's going to be put in.

Why do we continue to post negative press like this?? People come to this forum to get information and if Chazhound is repeating all this stuff, what do you think that says to the completely uneducated about dogs sect?

And while we may see that angle and it is a valid thing to bring up, do you really think most people are going to have the same thought? No, they're going to look at this and go "OMG see how vicious these dogs are they killed a BABY!!" I just spent a good portion of time yesterday trying to convince a family member that not all pitbulls need to be dragged out into the street and shot. They kept coming back with all these articles that are getting air time, where as most of my argument comes from "anecdotal" evidence.

So I challenge all of Chaz...for every one of these bad articles, let's find a good article to post right along with it.

Stupid parents of this child should be held up on neglect charges.

The dog should be euthanized.

Chained dogs should be inside some sort of physical barrier that keeps out wandering humans and dogs.

Yeah I'm not denying the apparent utter lack of parenting, but at the same time...kids can disappear in the blink of an eye. It's become legend in my family about the time I was 3, told my parents I was going to go walk to Dairy Queen and then proceeded to do just that. They had been watching me as closely as you can watch any 3 year old, but apparently the moment their back was turned, off I went. A neighbor called soon after that to say that they had me sitting on their couch because they saw me crossing a street on my own.

Now as far as the kid getting into the carport...that's a different story. For that, I blame the dog's owner for not keeping their dog securely contained.

Sure, zoom. It could have been a hit by car accident, or a stranger abduction, or any number of things with an unattended child that age.

This is one reason why it is IMPERITIVE to keep your dogs in such a manner that this kind of thing CAN NOT HAPPEN.

LOCKED gates, SECURE fencing, and no unfenced tethering.
