I took Zeus to the vet yesterday to get his stitches out. At our vet's office, the lobby is divided in two: one side for cats, one for dogs. There's a low partition between the cat side and dog side, with the large receptionist desk in the middle. Each side has its own door to the outside.

We were waiting when a lady came in. She asked the receptionist if she could wait with her dog on the cat side, since her dog "might start a fight". The receptionist said that was fine, since there was nobody on the cat side at that time.

She comes in with an oversized, obviously BYB pit bull. The dog drags her into the waiting room, and she takes a seat and starts chitchatting with the receptionist. And what this lady was saying just left me stunned.

--"I've always liked big dogs. But some people breed pit bulls too small. They need to be bigger. Bigger is always better."

--"You need to obedience train big dogs, of course. It's very important. Look, watch this." She turns to her pit bull.
"Ok boy, sit. Sit. SIT! C'MON, SIT!" Insert sounds of choke chain yanking repeatedly.
"SIT! D@MN IT, SIT!" (the lady is yelling at the top of her lungs at this point). "YOU'D BETTER SIT! SIT!" The pit bull finally sits. She beams at the receptionist: "See how well-trained he is?"

--"Oh, he's very protective of me towards other dogs. He will attack other dogs to try and protect me." I'm thinking to myself, Your dog is dog-aggressive. He's not protecting you. And to make it even more unbelieveable, the lady started BRAGGING about how her pit bull could "take down any dog he wants, he's so tough," and how he almost killed her brother's daschund, as well as several other dogs.

--"He sometimess tries to attack people, too, in order to protect me. I have to tell him when people are OK, otherwise he'll attack." She proudly tells the recpetionist about the time he tried to attack the plumber...even after she told him it was OK. But as she said, "He must have sensed something about that plumber, and I trust his instincts." She then bragged "He's so strong! It took me and my husband both to drag him away."

Gawd, it was horrible. At this point, the vet tech came to take Zeus' stitches out, so I didn't hear any more. Thank goodness.

It's disgusting. How could a person be that way? That whole situation is an attack waiting to happen. And of course, it will all be blamed on the pit bull breed.

We have a young lady that brings her out of control PB to the same vet we use. I have on 2 occasions been there when she pulls up. The receptionist always clears the lobby and takes her right back to a room. She can barely get the dog in the building and back to the room by herself even with a prong collar.
I have heard them tell her that they are going to stop treating her dog if she doesn't get some training done soon, to this she replied "Please don't, we will get some training soon, we have been through 3 vets for that reason already!" Wow, you would have think she would have learned with the first one or two vets huh?
This is what the public sees/hears and you wonder why people don't trust PB.........terrible owners!

Gem, your use of descriptives such as "beaming" has me rolling. While the situation isn't funny, your description was great.

Once again, we show that it's not the dog, but the owner.

What a winner. Reminds me of the couple I saw who were cruising around Petsmart with their pit bull, saying stuff like "sic 'em, boy" and laughing merrily.

how he almost killed her brother's daschund

Yeah, it's impressive when a pit bull nearly kills a dachshund. Wow, what's his next conquest, a kitten? No offense to Doxies, they're tough, but way smaller than a pit bull.

Classic case of the idiot owner............

There should be a minimum IQ for owning a dog. :D

You take a stupid, scare, low-self esteem person and any large strong dog and mix them together and you have a real problem. :(

In this case it obviously sounds like a case of a very bad owner. She is one of the ones that will pave the way for BSL.

Having said that, I often request to have a dog be brought straight in to a room, or kept seperate from other dogs. Working with rescue dogs the first thing I do is bring them straight to the Vet for shots and spay or neuter. Until I know their temperament with other dogs I want to make darn sure I am not putting anyone elses dog in danger.

Hopefully it will be her instead of someone else.
Well, since her dog has those amazing instincts about people, it is certainly possible he will "sense" that something is wrong with her.

What a moron. Does she not have any brains wat so ever? Chokin a dog is not teaching them. And bigger is better??? I seen a large pit myself in my neighborhood. It was as big as a great dane..but it looked sort of doofy like something was wrong, poor dog. But anyway, that lady really needs help. Her dog is just plain old aggressive. And bcuz it is a pit if it does bite anyone it will end up getting put down! People like that have not right owning a dog or any pet!!

Oh my, sounds like you had a wonderful time waiting in that reception room:rolleyes: . To sad that kind of mentality exsists among owners but I agree with everyone else hopefully it will be her attacked and not someone else or another dog.

Since were speaking of vet waiting rooms, their was actually one situation where I would of been happy to have that dog in the room with me.

This was a few months back but I we were going up north for the weekend when Duke came down with kennel cough a few nights before. My former vet which I have since switched from using, informed me no vets were in this weekend and advised me to go elsewhere. I didn't know how serious it was so to be safe decided to find another vet just to be sure before we all headed up north, Duke included. So anyways call around to a few vets but none had appoitments open that morning and we needed to be their that day as we were babysitting cousins for an aunt and uncle as they needed to be somewhere.

Finally after calling around we found a place and after sitting in the waiting room for 5 mins were called in to a room and were told the vet would be in shortly. Then two miniutes later we heard the door open and a man errupted in screaming apparently at the receptionist. He started screaming at her about what a wh*re she was and how he knew she was sleeping around with other guys and about how he was going to make her f*cking regreat it and smash her face into the wall. Through the chaos I could here her on the phone with the police through sobs saying how her ex boyfriend was here and threating to kill her, he then got louder and louder and started to scream at the police on the phone about how he wasn't threating her and that they didn't need to come. I was their with my mom, both of us 5'4'' and not much help and of course Duke at the time was only 3 months old and not much help. The only other man in the reception room was about 80 with a 10lb toy poodle. I kept praying someone would walk in with their unruly 80lb plus dog and just let it sick the guy but luckily the police were their a pretty soon after and arrested the guy.

All in all we had to wait 40 mins for the vet, but I felt terrible for the receptionist as she was only a year or so older then me (I'm 17), and clearly was very shaken up as he had been stalking her ever since they broke up a few weeks earlier.

So lets either hope that lady happens to walk into the vet when a domestic disturbance and lets her dog save the day or puts him through some serious training and turns him into a good canine citizen, sadly I think both in her case are very unlikely.

Sigh, what a crazy lady. It really urks me :\

I mean, I would have taken Yami on the other side too, because he dosen't get along that great with other doggies, well, males. But shes a little ridiculous to have said all those things and to even think her dog was trained. -sigh- idiots.

I don't have problems with people who take extra precautions because their dogs are dog-aggressive. That's being responsible. But it's another thing to actually brag about how many dogs your pet has attacked and injured.

Ah it is so sad and the reality is that so many people get these dog for those very reasons. I have seen the GANSTA type sic there pits on small dogs like poodles shihtzus etc and they think it shows the rest of us how cool their dog is when in reality ones like myself want to beat the darn agressive attacking dog with the owner until the owner of the dog has no more flesh on his hide and then feed his worthless bones to the dogs.
This is the type of thing that most of the public wittnesses and that is the exact reason that they are demanding to have them banned. One must remember that not all people own a dog or know much about dogs and when they see this thing in petsmart while going to go get their fish food or kitty litter it will convince them it is the dog and that they are this way or why would that nasty type person want them.
This is what will make the BSL a reality. Here in Las Vegas where the vast majority of housing tracts are HOA it is already a reality.
Banned list here in majority of the Las Vegas area is
1) pitbull
2) rotts
3) Akitas
4) Chows
5) Dobermans
6) great Danes
7) Huskys
8) German Shepards
9) Dalmations
10) Any other and all dogs not listed above weighing more then 40 lbs.
Yes folks and this is all brought to you by your friendly H.O.A.
a group of concerned citizens who feel that they live the right way and you should too! Stay tuned because they will be coming to your neighborhood soon.
AREN'T YOU GLAD ????
There is a growing trend of the do gooders of the world to see to it that they make decissions for you because they believe they have figured out the right way to live and now it is their sworn obligation to make it mandatory that all of us follow their lead, and it is the type of person the op described helping them achieve their goal.
