I just read my local laws, and its illegal to keep a female in heat out in the yard. She needs to be contained in a building, or at a veterinarian's office. I'm sure there are allowances for potty breaks, but you can't just put her out in the yard on a tie-out and leave for work, like my neighbor does.

We used to have a Rottie that we got from rescue. She was an inside and outside dog. When we put her outside she was placed in a completely enclosed kennel, wire underground and it had a top, too. This was the only way to protect her as we have so many dogs that run loose in our neighborhood.

Our problem was a neighborhood male kept digging holes all around our kennel that we had to keep fixing. But, what took the cake was he tried to attack us in our own yard. This male was about the size of an oversized min pin. But he had the attitude of a giant wild animal. We walked out to the kennel and he came at us with his teeth bared back. We went to the owner's home and asked him to please contain his dog and he said he can't even catch him. He runs loose for weeks at a time.

There is another dog, a pit bull, that is really mean. I can't stress how mean this dog is. He walked right up to a boy standing on the sidewalk in town as if he was a nice dog waiting to get a free pet. With no provoking the boy was attacked in the face and they had to put zillions of stitches to close him up and even had to reattach his ear. Why on earth anyone would let a dog like this roam amazes me. The dog wardens have been trying to get this dog for some time now. Problem is he resides in one state and roams over the line into another as our town is in two states.

If I had a quarter for every dog that runs free in our town, I would be very rich! Nothing like walking outside and there is a huge pile next to your sidewalk!

bahamut99: thats actually fairly common, every town in ct has laws about females in heat, in our town the law is that a female in heat must be confined indoors unless "SUPERVISED ON LEASH" in its own yard. a female in heat is not allowed anywhere public (ie a dog park, a trainging class, ect)

In our town this would be by law a 50/50 responsibility, the females owner would be fined for allowing their female dog outside without supervision, and the males owner would be fined for the leash law, the owner of the male would be responsible for half the cost of an emergency spay/abortion. if the owener of the female decided NOT to abort the litter the male dogs owner would be relived of all responsibility as that is the females owners choice. which i completly agree with. you have ANY dog intact or not, its your job to ensure that dog is properly confined when it cannot be supervised. an intact male or female, a spneutered male or female, a mixed breed or purbred, showdog or pet...it doesnt matter.

#1-WHY on earth did you adopt an intact female or am I confused? If you did adopt an intact female from a rescue why didnt you get it fixed??????? I must be misunderstanding??

#2)It's funny to me, off the topic, how you mention Rotweillers & Pit bulls but didnt mention the breed that the smaller dog was. It is just unnerving to me because that is how everyone is. When a pit bull does something bad he is a pit bull when a lab does something bad he is a "dog". Notice when a lab attacks someone he isnt labeled as a lab but as a dog or a mix??

Sounds like the "oversized min pin" is just as aggressive since you said the dog attacked you in his own yard.

There is something going on here that I don't understand. Why would anybody tolerate a habitual loose dog? Even if loose dogs are status quo, why wait for the dog to attack (or try to) before you do something? Frankly, if it got that far and was taking place in my yard, the dog wouldn't be leaving my yard. If I knew there was a dog running loose who'd put a child in stitches, it would be gone as well. At the very least, the parents deserve the closure and animal control is going to want to check the dog for rabies.

But that's me. I keep my dogs contained and would kill a dog that hurts a human without reasonable provocation. Even if it was my own dog. Call me a dog nazi, but that's the responsible thing to do.

First of all, the dog belonged to my son who is not a kid. And the reason I didn't mention the breed that the smaller dog was is because I don't know. It LOOKED LIKE AN OVERSIZED MIN PIN. And yes, it was a very agressive dog. And I did what I should have done, go to the owner and request that they do something about their dog.

And its not my fault that the mean dog that attacked the kid on the sidewalk was a PITBULL! Get a life. I'm so sick and tired of people acting like a pit bull never does anything wrong. These people have the meanest dog I have ever seen and it just so happens to be a pit bull! The man that owns this dog is a known drug dealer and wants his dog to be mean to keep people out of his yard. Has nothing to do with liking or disliking this breed. He was in jail at the time and his mother let the dog loose, not caring that its agressive as it is.

So many on this forum are so quick to snap on others that I hardly ever make posts and it just reminds me as to why I don't!

But you said that the "oversized min pin" attacked YOU.

Sounds like both the pit bull and min pin are aggressive. Call animal control. Our neighbors let their 2 dogs run loose sometimes and although I have contemplated calling animal control on them I dont because they are nice dogs.

Um..Still wondering about the intact female?

But your neighbors didnt take care of their dog: "Our problem was a neighborhood male kept digging holes all around our kennel that we had to keep fixing. But, what took the cake was he tried to attack us in our own yard. This male was about the size of an oversized min pin. But he had the attitude of a giant wild animal. Please call animal control on the dogs, especially the pit bull, if it is running loose and aggressive it needs to be put to sleep. Sorry may sound harsh but we dont need any more pit attacks.

PS-I dont understand what your son being older has to do with anything?

I'll be even harsher. I say a dog running loose that has seriously injured a child could be shot on sight. Because the 2nd attack could also spur the banning of the breed, which is far worse.

I did call animal control after going to the guy and he said he couldn't do anything about his own dog. But, didn't think I needed to go into all the details. His dog is nasty and should not be running loose. And yes, he tried to get us in our own yard. But, he is no where near as mean as the pit.

The oversized min pin looks like that. I have no idea what kind it really is....has the docked tail and all but is very round for a min pin. I'm sure it isn't pure, but he looks like one. Almost like a rat terrier/min pin cross.

As for the pit bull. This dog is extremely agressive. Animal control has tried to get this dog. As I wrote before, it involves two states and they obviously are having problems working between the two states. If it happened in my state, the dog would have been euthanized due to the severity of the attack. The problem lies with the dog crossed the line and they said the dog has to be in their state before they can take possession of him. I strongly disagree with this. If the dog is this agressive, it should not matter where he resides. And the two states need to get their act together and work together on getting this dog put away. I have been at the gas station when this dog was in a vehicle parked next to me. This dogs chews at the window wishing he could get to you. Nobody on Earth should be allowed to own a dog like this. I also firmly believe it has to do with the owner dealing with drugs. A mean dog like this keeps others away from his place or at least I guess this must be his perspective.

My point I have been trying to make is that I control my dogs, going so far as to bury a bottom and put on a top of our fenced kennel. And what do we have to put up with but many dogs coming into our yard. Seems our neighborhood has no problem allowing dogs to run free. I've seen many get hit. The problem lies with the owners of these pets and they are the irresponsible ones. It doesn't help when we live in a small town and the animal control has to come from a good distance, so by the time you get a response, the loose animals are long gone. I love all breeds of dogs. I am not picking on any specific type of dog, but the fact is no matter what the type, they should be taken care of.

If your dog can jump over a six foot fence, then its your responsibility to make sure he doesn't. Not everyone believes in spaying/neutering but the lady should also have the right to take their dog out in their own yard and expect it to be safe. But, the real world is we know that isn't going to happen.

We live in a similar area - AC is about an hour away and they only come out for "emergencies" - which means it's not an emergency if someone's pack of dogs is terrorizing my sheep (or biting my horses' noses, which has happened before!) or killing my chickens, but just you wait until I try and take matters into my own hands, then it's an "emergency"!

Because the bitch in season is the responsibility of the person who owns her. She is NOT the responsibility of anyone else who might happen to own an intact male dog in her n'hood. As someone else said, a wise person does not EVER leave a bitch in season unsupervised outdoors. NOT EVER.

I have 6 ft tall excellent fencing with locked gates. I DO NOT TRUST ***ANY*** FENCING TO KEEP A BITCH IN SEASON. I DO NOT EVER leave a bitch in season out in my yard, NOT FOR 30 SECONDS.

If the person with the loose dog is liable, it would only be for the broken leash law.

A bitch in season is generally considered as an attractive nuisance. There are laws on almost every animal control book about how bitches in season must be confined.

If one is ignorant or careless enough to leave a bitch in full bloom season out unattended in a yard, I say they made their bed, they should lay in it.

;)

JMNSHO....
And IMO, someone with an intact male dogs, needs to be aware that there may be females in heat in the neighboring area & keep their dog properly confined!

And since you felt the need to jump all over me, where did I ever say that it's ok to leave a bitch in heat unattended outside? I would never do it, so let's not go there. I've got intact dogs & have NEVER had an "oops" litter (or even an "oops" pregnancy for that matter). But that wasn't the op's question.

And let me ask this: We've got an 8 ft privacy fence, double fenced (meaning we had the ugly side with the beams showing so to be extra cautious--our OEB loves to bust his head through the boards of wood fences--we double fenced it. We also spent a lot of time & money digging a trench 1 1/5 ft. wide all the way around the yard under the fence & filled it in with concrete (as the neighbor's dog wouldn't quit digging under & we already had an "issue" with their previous dog who dug out a hole I had just filled in & got into my yard when I had a bunch of dogs out). We have electric fencing (horse & cattle) running along the bottom of the fence & along the top of the fence. We have 2 gates with heavy duty padlocks. PLUS, when I have multiple dogs outside, they are on tie-outs/chains. So again, after all the time & money I've spent "barracading" my dogs in my yard, if someone else's dog manages to get into my yard, whatever happens is 50% my fault? I don't freaking think so........................

If you've done all that, you're obviously willing to take extra precautions, why would you, knowing what a male dog or wild dog, or coyote would go thru to get to a bitch in heat, would you leave your female outside unattended while in season???? Again, i'll bring up the scenerio of my friends dog, whom just was bred to the right dog, having coyotes in a suburb of chicago 20 feet from her patio door just waiting for the chance to get at her female. If it can happen there it can happen anywhere.

My Collie went into heat about a month ago. Yes she was miserable because she was cooped up in a crate for most of the day. Dogs showed up, and actually got into the yard, but after blocking off al entrances they went away and I left her loose.

Now if she would have been impregnated I would have raised hell with the studs owner. I would have fully expected for them to pay half or more of the spay abort.

Now why would anyone keep a dog outside and chained?

Where did I ever state that a bitch in heat should be left outside? Or that I've done so? I've NEVER left a bitch in heat outside unattended. They are kept in the house, & only loose by themselves, so all trouble is avoidable. I don't believe in "oops" litters. Every litter that happensis 100% preventable.

As for the chaining issue, although off topic, I'll make it short & sweet. If a single dog is outside, he can have the full run of our over 1/2 acre fully fenced backyard. If there are 2 dogs that get along, they can have full run of the yard to play as long as I am physically out in the yard watching. However, if I have more than 3 dogs that want to be outside (which is all of them all the time), then they are on chains/tie-outs. Now, EACH one gets some alone time to run & play fetch with us in the yard, to sniff around & chase the squirells & do whatever he/she pleases. EACH dog also gets walked & exercised every single day. Again, it's just when it's "down time" & the dogs want to be outside to lie around in the sun, they are individually contained as I don't have pack animals & not all of my dogs get along. And it doesn't bother me one bit that they don't or might not like each other. I didn't get my dogs to be babysitters to the other dogs I already had.

Has anyone mentioned yet that phrase that goes "It takes two to tango"? I haven't gone through 12 pages of bickering, but I just thought I'd mention that lol... It takes a MALE and a FEMALE to make puppies, and it takes BOTH owners being RESPONSIBLE to properly confine them and keep them away from each other. That is part of responsible dog ownership. BOTH owners are at fault.

People keep mentioning that the stud's owner would also be at fault -- what if there was no owner? What if it was a stray? Who to blame then?

THAT is why I think it's the bitch's owner's fault. Not every male dog has an owner, let alone a responsible one. If a stray dog got to your bitch, you'd have no one to blame but yourself.
