Starting a rescue

Well yes you are right there are some real nutty rescues here in Ontario. I have worked with a few. They did not even have the right consideration for the dogs let alone the new owners.

The first rescue was a lab collie mix the left with me, doggie aggressive and as well had seperation anxiety. To top it off they did not even send the food for the dog. Then once the work was done, NO One advertised. When I contacted them oh it was not only up to me to feed the dog, and work on its issues, but to pay for the advertising. Nothing less than then receiving funding for a dog they did nothing with or for. I placed the dog, and she went to a wonderful home. I even directed the funds to the rescue! Why because I am not a ass hole like them.

Another, area they sent 3 orphan pups too me and they again did not supply the food for the dogs. I again would not only have to take care of the formula, but the vet care of the individuals.

So now we move on, they contact me to do an assessment on a stray Rottie. 4 yr old male. Well the lady brought the dog over, I stood back and watched the dogs demenor and characteristic's. I handled the dog as well, once I completed the evaluation, This is what I told her:

1) I do not want to be rude or anything but the dog is to much dog for any one. The dog has been on the streets far too long and has the tendency to attack. The dog does not have what I would say I would want to own. I truly beleive that the dog should be destroyed before the dog hurts someone.

Well they wanted me to keep the dog. Well you know exactly what I said. NO!! The lady took the dog home and then called me 2 days latter. The dog had taken her son and ripped him apart like he was a rag doll. A 3 yr old child at that. So no there are tooo many back yard breeders, and back yard rescues not only here in Canada but all over the place.

So you do not need to worry about the dogs that we take in, they will be:

1) Fed
2) Altered vacinated
3) Trained
4) and properly placed

Hi I am sorry that I confused you; I was just stating that the one rescue that I had worked for and assisted was not a well handled rescue;

Rather than putting the funds into the dogs, they kept the money, the owed Vets all over the place. They had the foster homes pay all the bills, they never ever put out they just took in.

They even had the never to ask me to steal a dog for them. What idiots, if you can not do things right don't do it at all. Like I would ever steal for anyone. I told them there are laws that protect animals and if they did not want to follow those laws then well I have to say good bye. Audios, salavi. Avederzan.

After I had left the organization it would come to my attention that the administrator and her partners would embezel funds from the program. So all I am saying that there are all kinds if idiots out there and I won't deal with or be apart of that type of stuff. Just having one of my days hope I have not been rude

cindr, I think this is great! Definitely something I'd like to do when I'm old, wrinkly, have saved up money, and am forced to retire from a regular job. As long as I'm living and able to, I will be working and never retired. There is far too much to do in this world to look forward to retirement.

Thanx for the vote of confidence! I will say this, when this mare is old and grey, I will hand it over to a young to do filly. I surely will want to rest when this trip around the block is done. I love what I do, but it is sometimes not even worth the greif. Alas, some one has too do it.

I may make money in the areas of dog training and grooming and everything else, but it just goes right back into the dogs. Just this month we spent well over $2000.00 in vet bills alone,that is not even considering the doggie food.

Then you get, oh how much for that puppy in the window? " FREE RIGHT'! I sometimes wish I had a normal every day job, at least I would know that the money is beging made and I leave the rat race at work. Here the rat race is not only my business but my home too. I guess it is about keeping a straight face, dusting off your pant legs and plugging foreward right

Cindr... I'll be viewed as a sceptic again, but please clarify. You worked/volunteered for a rescue that had you do an evaluation on a stray Rott that tore apart and killed a 3yr child in the fosters home? What was the outcome for that foster person, as she would have been facing jailtime for negligence (sp) to take the dog back into her home and expose it to a child, after your evaluation. And why are you spending $2000.00 in one month on vet bills in your kennel? Coming from a kennel of # 200 dog boarding capacity whose owners also showed 2 breeds, we never incured a bill like that in 1 month. What were you charged for as that sounds very high.

otch1, that's okay you can be as skeptical as you want. Yes I volunteered for a rescue, and that rescue new nothing or at that did nothing right. My words and mine alone. No the kid was not killed, he was severely attacked where as he almost lost his eyesight, and needed plastic sergery. No the foster, was not repremanded or charged for the dog attacking. As this occured 14 yrs ago. No one seemed to have pressured it to that point. Now remember they did nothing right at all.

otch1, I do not know where you are located, if you are in the states or anywhere else. Although we did have a litter of Shep pups, so their vet costs as to first shots, and heart worm alone cost $400.00, then we placed micro chips in each one $80.00 x 8 $640.00 second set of shots on 4 shepherd pups and heart worm $400.00, shots on Miss Joy $300.00 shots and blood work done on Miss Fritz $300.00. So therefore the true total for my dogs, this month is $2340.00 and will be going up. I take 100% top knotch care of the dogs I own, we let nothing slide. If there is a issue that needs to be taken care of we take care of it. I always place a fair amount of cash into my vets account, there fore if in which I need a service at any given time it is paid in advance. Then on that date I again place further funds just for the next trip to the vets. It could be in a week it could be in a month, it could be in a yr. No matter the funds are always there for a rainy day.

I do not beleive in taking advantage of anyone, let it be an animal or a human, I am a true beleiver if you can not afford to own a dog then you don't deserve a dog. I work and have worked very hard for everthing I own, it is important to me that my kids, my dogs, my husband and I get what it is we deserve and nothing less.

mrose; Thanx for the compliment, you can do it too. It just does not come over night. I remember the days that it was not like this, and had a hard time, but no matter we have a great big God and he see's our hearts. When it is either helping one of his helpless animals or a homeless person or just being their when we are needed. It is all in the heart of the matter. Thanx again for the vote of confidence
