Before starting each class or practice session take the time to "walk" your dog around the area to be used. In other words, practice your "walkies."
Week one (first "class") heeling pattern suggestion: On the command "forward," step forward with your left foot and walk three to six paces briskly. On the command "halt;" stop on your left foot (as previously explained and sit your dog. Repeat with varied number of steps for five to ten minutes.
Week two (second "class") heeling pattern suggestion: On the command "forward," walk six to eight paces briskly and "about turn," sharply away from your dog; continue heeling six to eight paces and "halt." Repeat as needed.
On the command "forward," walk six to eight paces briskly and "left-u-turn" sharply into your dog; continue heeling six to eight paces and "halt." Repeat as needed. On the command "slow," walk very slowly six to eight paces. On the command "normal" increase to your normal brisk walking pace. On the command "fast" increase to a trot for six to eight paces. On the command "normal" slow to your normal brisk walking pace. Repeat as needed.
Incorporate the about-turn, left-u-turn, and change-of-pace into your heeling pattern and continue for 10 to 15 minutes.
Week three (third "class") heeling pattern suggestion: With about six to eight paces between commands "forward," "halt," "about-turn," "left-u-turn," "halt," "forward," "slow," "normal," "fast," "normal," "halt." Repeat as needed. Continue for about 20 minutes.
Training tip: As you and your dog progress, you should vary the number of paces taken between commands.
Week four through eight (fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth "classes") heeling pattern suggestion: forward, about-turn, about turn again, slow, normal, halt. Forward, fast, normal, left-u-turn, about turn, halt. Forward, left-u-turn, halt. Forward, slow, normal, fast, normal, about-turn, left-u-turn, halt. All with varied a number of paces between each command. Continue for about 20 minutes.
