Thats how we got a wonderful cat, he was lost and looking for his people. So sad, as he was a very nice gentle cat, an obvious pet. We took him right in and he lived to almost 18! We found finally how he got lost, whenever we walked out to our cars, he ran behind us and jumped upon the hood or tried to get in. And our neighbours too, and delivery trucks! I had to extract him from the elec utility truck when the guy was working on our street. When we went on vacation and he saw our suitcases and coolers, he would run out and sit on the very top of our car and wait till we packed and let him in. We denied him the trips to the local grocery if the days were very hot or very cold, as we had to secure the windows tight.
He was so much like a dog!
All our dogs loved to travel too. But this amazing cat was unique.

Oh, yes, we did find a stray Yellow lab mix many years ago, and gave her to a nearby neighbour, they still have her, she is 14 now.

Yup, definitely tell them, and then call animal control next time. They'll learn a lesson if they have to pay to get her out of the pound.
