She was just a stray 5 month old puppy that an old lady found off the side of a busy road that she couldn't keep. No one knows how long Crystal was a stray or anything, but we can assume that she probably did not have much human interaction (particularly males) or was abused by a guy (although I strongly suspect the former).

Man, we have some lucky dogs on here!

I always wonder about the dogs with unknown history and what kind of life they've lived in the past.

I'm a little hazy on Crossbone's story...maybe stardogs will chime in if I've screwed it up horribly. I have a piece of paper saying he was taken to a shelter at 4 months old with the name of Scooter. Then he was pulled by ACD rescue, named Cody, and placed in a home where they named him Gator. This family had "Gator" until their little 10 year old boy was diagnosed with cancer and they were kind of forced to give him back to ACD rescue. He was back to Cody and Stardogs came to foster him. I fell in love with him over the internet and a couple months later drove down to North Carolina from Michigan and brought him home! So I think he's had three homes total (including mine) and was in foster care twice. We got him when he was around 15 months and last week he's been here for exactly 2 years!

I don't really know Jack's story. I got him from a shelter event at a pet store when he was 4-5 months old.

Buzz was bought from a breeder because of an ad in the paper. He came home at a day shy of 9 weeks old. Lived with me his entire life. Born 5/4/1998.

Bailey was purchased from a semi-responsible breeder. My mom put a deposit on the litter for an xmas gift for me. She was born 1/24/2000. She came home at 8 weeks to the day day after her puppy eye exam.

Gabby was purchased from a breeder as a puppy. She was born 11/30/2005. Lived with that family until she was 7.5. They surrendered her to rescue because the kids were afraid of her... I can't ever imagine someone being afraid of this dog. Anyway she's mine now and I adore her.

I found Psyche (originally Marley!) on Kijiji when she was about 6 months old. She was about an hour away from me and lived in a home that literally had no yard and she was only ever out in the drive way on a flexi, minus a few walks here and there. When I went to meet her she was very timid, but I loved her to death. She curled up in my lap on the way home and I knew then that she was perfect. I later found out that she was gotten as a puppy from a local horse person we 'knew' through the horse scene, so I contacted her original all breeder and was able to meet her father, but herother had been rehomed. The 'breeder' told me she just loved Psyche and had originally planned on keeping her, but the original owners daughter feel in love with her so she let her go to them. She has been with me since I brought her home and will be until she dies.

Simi was from a reputable breeder local to me, raised and loved by breeder and her children and all visitors until she came home to me at a little over 7 weeks (breeder was going on vacation and figured I may as well have her home vs a dog sitter caring for her).

What happens to your dog before you got him/her? If known, where were they born? How many owners did they have?

KAYLEE
born in: Michigan, at her co-breeder's house
was sold to: a really competitive obedience home. Like, breeder and trainer of multiple OTCH Dobermans. When Kaylee didn't finish her conformation championship fast enough, she was returned to the breeder. (Did I mention this woman is insanely competitive? After Kaylee, she bought and returned 2-3 other Dobermans from other breeders before finally getting what she wanted.) Then I got her, and the rest is history!

TALLA
born in: San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico
Talla was found in a garage at 3ish weeks old, after her mother abandoned her with her littermates. RD got her, then sent her to me in Iowa when she was old enough to fly. So really, who knows who her parents were or if they're even still alive... or if Talla had ended up on the streets of San Carlos, if SHE would even be alive right now.

POISON
born in: Illinois
What can I say.... on paper, i co-bred Poison. She's lived with me since she was 8 weeks old. :)

STARK
born in: The great state of Texas!
Stark spent the first 10 weeks of his life livin' large in Texas, raised the way a breeder should be raising their puppies. His breeder drove up to Wichita to deliver him to me, and now he's a good ol' Iowa boy! (Though right now he's in Texas for the winter so he can be shown more than I can show him up here, and I miss him soooo much!)

Simba was born from a family friend's female who they wanted to have one litter before she was spayed. I choose him as mine when he was 2 days old, and he came home at 6 weeks. He's 11 years old now and looking so old, but hasn't slown down any!

Bruno I walked across town to get in 2009, I believe, after school without anyone knowing, with an ex-friend. Their family had him since he was a puppy out of a litter bred for snake food, then wanted to get rid of him because he was too annoying and they couldn't afford his shots anymore. He's suspected to be about 13/14 now, but also is only looking older but not slowing down!

Jazzy is unknown. We found her running out of the woods on a rainy day while I was practising driving for my permit. She was dirty, matted mess. That was...2011, I think.

Chomper is from a breeder in Minnesota. Not much more to say on him.

Soon-to-be-puppy will be flying here from a breeder in Iowa! (Another Mini Aussie).

Riley - his litter was found on the side of a rural road by a co-worker's daughter. She and her boyfriend were able to catch 3 pups (out of 5); then couldn't find the remaining 2. Co-worker thought they had homes for all 3 but that fell through for Riley and his sister. Email went around work, daughter brought the puppies in and I chose Riley. He was probably around 7 wks old when he was found, I took him home a week later. Hard to believe it's been five years.

Mick and Murph kinda ran away from their first home (about a mile down the road). Family had the mother (a black setter type mix) and I was told whenever she disappeared, they knew she was having a litter somewhere. Sometimes the pups survived, sometimes they didn't. Murph and Mick were the survivors of their litter, left to do as they pleased after a failed attempt to housebreak them and fed if they were around.
We thought they were strays when they first showed up, being extremely wary and cautious. After awhile Mick and Murph camped out by our gate before we finally let them inside the fence. They liked to chase cars and I didn't want to find them hit one day. The woman who owned their mother saw me walking Mick and Murph a couple of weeks later, claimed them, then called within a half hour and asked if I wanted to keep them. I said yes. That was 2005 and they were about 2 yrs. old.

Past dogs:
Patch: Saw her walking down the road the same year we bought our property. We were fencing the front line, she sauntered by, then came back to watch us. Called her, she crept over, collapsed into my lap and started talking. She was almost a year old. Patch was my heart dog, could take her anywhere and she got along with all dogs and cats. She was great with puppies/young dogs; teaching them doggy manners without getting harsh or going overboard. She was also a 'snob'; she knew dog people when she saw them! History unknown other than she hated teenage boys and was deathly afraid of basement stairs.
Sam: Four years after acquiring Patch, Mom called one day and told us Patch was in the paper as Pet of the Week at the Humane Society. Sure enough, her 'twin' was up for adoption. Went to meet him and found he was from the same area as Patch, same age as Patch, but taken from a hoarder who had 50 dogs. We adopted him and found he was dog aggressive (although never with Patch), cat aggressive, and not house-broken. His redeeming quality, he LOVED people (Patch was less than friendly with the general public). Both he and Patch were excellent mousers/ratters.
Emily: Neighbor found her pregnant mother (purebred Rottie) and offered us one of the pups. We took Emily (the runt) when she was 8 wks and she grew to be the biggest one of the litter and my velcro dog.
Holly: People who owned the boarding barn where we kept our horses found her on vacation. They were told she was a stray, hanging around the campground. They took her home but wound up keeping her tied when she kept leading their other dogs off the property, hunting. They didn't want to keep her chained for the rest of her life so we agreed to take her since we were moving to our place and had a couple of acres fenced for the dogs. She was maybe two or three years old.
Robbie: He was an outdoor dog, lived down the road about 1/4 mile. His first owners adopted him when he was around one. Eight or nine years later, they moved away and left him to a neighbor. That neighbor also moved, (2 or 3 years later), leaving him to the next person who bought the house. A few years later, that person moved, leaving him to the next person. That person stuck him in a 10 x 10 pen with a young Chow mix. Robbie finally dug out and when we saw him, super skinny and limping down the road toward his original home, we took him. He was nearly 14 by that time, and lived another 5 years with us. The person who stuck him in the pen didn't want him back.
Abbey Road: Found on the side of a rural highway, running up to whatever car slowed down to miss her, she was maybe a year old. No clue about past history.

Lily
Picked up on the street at aprox. a year old by a local humane society. Judging by the really specific associations she showed, her previous owner was a middle aged man with glasses whom responded "traditionally" to her bored husky shenanigans and later dumped her when that approach did not work. I mean... I couldn't lose her if I tried and she got over everything but the memory of being hungry pretty quickly, so yeah feel pretty comfortable with that conjecture. Probably safe to say she was bred by a musher and placed in a pet home because of her badly splayed front feet. We both got lucky. I literally adopted her the day she came available. Lol, was supposed to meet like four other dogs at that shelter... she's just perfect. :)

Will
Don't know what his breeder was like... but his first job was as a little kid's 4H dog. After that a dude bought him with intentions of sheep dog trialing him. Some people my parent's know worked as brokers to help pick him out, get him to us, and brush up his sheep training for us. He's not a perfect working sheepdog, but he a perfect peach of a dude for our family. Really super dog.

Scout
Her mom and other relatives were part of a hoarding bust in MT in 2008. She was born right around the time they came into rescue. Her first owner adopted her from a shelter at 12wks old. She had her until she was almost 1.5yrs old. Her second owner is a good friend of mine. She wanted a dog like Lily... I finally agreed to take her after she was with them for six months. During that six months I had spent a lot of time working with her already. I meant to just foster her and well... Scout was meant to be my dog I suppose. She chose me the second she met me. I fought it a long time, lol. She's a good nutbar. Her two previous owners were good people, just not the right fit.

Nia - from a breeder. She was a hold back puppy to be shown/bred but around 4-5 months old it was evident she didn't have a show temperament (shy, reactive around dogs) so I got her. She was born in BC 3 hours away from where I live.

Truffles and Popcorn - no idea where they were born. My aunt's family were told they were from "breeders" but I suspect they're from puppy mills since they were bought out of a pet shop. I'm not sure if there are a lot of puppy mills in the UK though... Both were picked out by my aunt's 2 children at around 6 or 7 years old as the best looking puppy available. Thankfully despite their presumably terrible breeding and terrible conformation for their respective breeds, they've been healthy (8 yrs old and 5 years old) thus far, so we're thankful for that.

From a hunting kennel about 30 minutes up the road from where we live.

Cobain
From a breeder

Rigby
Found as a stray in Toronto. Took them a few months to catch her because she kept running. She was brought into the shelter at under 19lbs, when I got her she was 19.3lbs, she is now a healthy 28-30lbs.
She was adopted out 3 (I think) times before and returned within the week each time. I don't know about the first few times, but the last time she was returned was because of allergies.

Ruby
A friend of my mom's sister bought Ruby as a "Poodle mix" puppy to be a companion for her geriatric Collie. She works full time and lives alone with the dog and Ruby quickly developed separation anxiety due to lack of interaction, exercise, and training.
Ruby was only supposed to be a foster for us, but she stayed.

So, my friend has a young Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Lotta. She hadn't told this earlier but Lotta is actually her second dog. My friend used to have a Tibetan Spaniel before Lotta. Her name was Lissu. (My friend can tell you more if you want to know something about her.) Both of her dogs had been bought straight from breeders.
