I feel like I have probably asked this before, but oh well....
So I'm house/pet sitting for a few days with Cobain and Rigby. This house has a resident Golden Retriever (whom is the same age as Cobain - they grew up together), and a cat.

I have never really owned a cat before due to my father's allergies. So my dogs aren't exactly familiar with the species. So every time I house sit here, I observe.

Cobain is weird around cats - curious, but also nervous. But cats seem to love him. The one here tonight will brush up against him, and him only, touch her nose to his, and then flop on her back. Cobain doesn't really seem to know what to make of it, but he will follow her - and chase a bit if she runs.

Rigby doesn't even acknowledge the cat's existence. The cat seemed pretty shocked when she walked past her on the stairs without a second glance. (Bonny the cat has a reputation for guarding the stairs from dogs). I have a feeling that if a cat were to hurt her she wouldn't be so nonchalant.

The resident dog doesn't interact with the cat at all.

Oz likes to chase cats, but is really afraid of them once they turn around. And although we were told Ruby lived with a cat and loved said cat, she is very barky and terrier-like around cats. I wouldn't trust her.

So I'm just curious.

How do your dogs respond to cats?

the two cats my dogs have met both did not like dogs around them.

Chloe was very curious/obsessed with the cat and wanted to play with them, and thought that it was a game when they would bat a paw at her and she would run around and then be right in front of the cat waiting for more.

Angel I don't trust as much around cats as she doesn't really like them. She listens when I tell her to leave it, but if it runs she wants to chase it, especially if I am not around.

Cali absolutely adores cats, whether it's our own three or a random cat that we run into on a walk. She's lucky our cats are tolerant though because she enjoys running up and licking faces/ears/etc.

As far as the cats and what they think of her... they're indifferent to her. They usually let her give them kisses but sometimes they just ignore her and walk off.

My dogs have only been around our 1 cat. They ignore him but I don't know if they'd behave the same around other cats.

My cat is terrible and likes to hiss and swat if a dog is within 10 feet of him, and he also likes to just randomly walk up behind them and bite their legs. I'm not sure why none of the dogs have eaten him yet. I would've.

Fable goes absolutely batshit crazy when she sees cats, and therefore cats are generally terrified of her. I'm trying to desensitize her with my cat, but I honestly don't know if they will ever be able to be loose together. The only flaw in my otherwise perfect dog.

Roxie will kill them on sight.

Or try to, at least. She's lost to cats before.

She is about as far from cat safe as a dog can be. Even saying "kitty" or "is that a cat?" will make her go from 0-90 in the blink of an eye.

Leo plays nicely with cats indoors. He probably wouldn't do great with a super flighty cat indoors just because he would be convinced they were playing when the cat was actually scared. But he is really great with dog-savvy cats and does respect their signals if they don't want to play.

Outdoors, they are his favorite thing to chase EVAR! I think its because they run so fast (you know, cause they are running for their lives) and Leo lurves running top speed but rarely gets to because most other dogs just don't run as fast as he can. He would never harm them if he ever caught them though. Its all about the chase.

One time we unexpectantly encountered a very dog-savvy cat while outdoors and while Leo was off leash. He nose-bumped the cat a few times, basically saying "Run please. I would like you to run". The cat knew better, so after three nose bumps he gave up and ignored her entirely.

So overall, he does well with dog-savvy cats but might be a little overwhelming for scaredy cats.

Hugo is bad with cats. I'm working with him on it but he wants to chase/play even if they don't want to. He got smacked in the face by a stray cat once and ran away, though. So I don't think he really wants to fight. I'm not sure if he wants to play or if he would kill one thinking of it like a squirrel. We knew he wasn't cat friendly when we got him but SO is allergic to cats so we'll never have one.

Sam doesn't give a crap about cats indoors. He cuddles with my family's two cats. Outdoors he's definitely interested and will chase them. Luckily he has a really good recall and will turn off of anything because I'm not sure what he'd do if he actually caught up to one.

New puppy seems fine so far with the resident cats at least. He's a little curious and did try and chase Lillie the first night he was here but other than that he hasn't given them much thought.

Rhys would be a cat killer too, inside or out. Henry is ok with safe intros inside, but if he sees cats outside, all bets are off.

Jackson is "okay" with cats.... so long as they don't run, LOL. He's so weird. He'd never hurt a cat for real. But he's VERY interested in them; a little too interested most of the time. Like, we can't just go into someones house who has a cat and just let him loose because if he sees that cat, and then cat runs or hisses, he chases it and becomes obsessive about finding it. If a cat is under a bed or hidden, he will bark until corrected by me.

But my dad has two cats and he can be chilling upstairs and not really care that much about them. We have a gate at the top of the stairs and dogs mainly stay down and cats up. However my bedroom is upstairs so often he will be up there w/ me and not really seemingly caring about the cats- unless the other dogs begin barking at them, then he suddenly will too. Even *hearing* Lilly's footsteps downstairs make him get obnoxious about the cats and start barking. But most of the time he's pretty chill with them.

Pip is happy to co-exist in a state of live and let live.

Maisy likes our cats. Outside cats are a little too interesting.

Squash is fine with the cats we already had when he was a puppy. Outside cats or trying to introduce a new cat into the household is not at all fine.

Frodo is pretty okay with cats, but will occasionally try to chase them.

Siri, no. The only time she has ever existed around cats without spending the time trying to kill them was Sara's cat, who is good at staying up on things, and I think she was only able to do that because there was so much other stuff (aka: dog friends!) going on, that she didn't stop to think about the cat much. She very much wanted to kill the clinic cats at my work.

Buzz was fine with all cats. Bailey is not fine with any cats, and it's gotten worse as she's gotten older. Gabby chased cats when I first got her but now she doesn't care. Diego dislikes my cat who tries to rub on him. He ignores the other cat.

Ryker is fine with our cat. He wants to chase all other cats. Gypsy goes nuts when she sees or hears our cat. We have to keep them separated.

Finn is good with cats who put up with his border collie crap. He's a bit of a chaser and sensitive to movement.

But my SO of two years has two cats who don't exactly like that. So. Lots of leash time and training has gotten him much better, but who knows how far we'll get. They still hate him, but y'know. Progress. :p

Middie is pretty good. We've worked with him a lot, and he's pretty happy about them. He used to be too excited and pushy, but after fostering about a hundred kittens and learning to be gentle, we moved into this place and he became instant BFFs with the kitty. They actually play, inside and outside, and the cat instigates it. Middie takes corrections well and will back off. I left them alone together after a month or two. He's trustworthy, and the cat is a big Tom who has been there and done that.

With my cat or other "inside" cats (friends cats, clinic cats, store cats, etc)...

Missy pretends that they don't exist, and will actively avoid them if they hiss or swat at her.

Heidi doesn't really care. She'll ocassionally lick or sniff the cat, but that's about it.

Jack will try to chase and play with new cats until they get mad. His routine is to run up to my cat, play bow at her, and bark. She'll hiss or growl at him, and he walks away. This happens several times a week. The cat will also walk up to him, paw at his tail, and then run away when he turns around to chase her.

Outside cats are fair game to be chased. The people that live behind me let their cats outside and I always check to make sure the cats aren't in my yard before I let my dogs outside. I really don't want to think about them catching a cat. :(

We have always had a cat or two with our dogs. Our old boy lived to 20 years and he was great at bringing up puppies. He didn't run and he didn't scratch. Essie our cat we have now grew up as a kitten with Gael our oldest dog and they are the best of mates. She doesn't like Scout the brittany because Scout finds the cat quite exciting and will nose poke her. Essie just ignores her.

I am sure Scout would chase and probably grab a loose cat that ran from her if it wasn't fast enough. We walk past cats all the time on the footpath (she is on a lead) and none move so she isn't too worried. But the neighbours cat has had a couple of lucky escapes from our backyard, just making it the fence ahead of her. Where I live it is extremely rare to have indoor only cats and they roam all over the place.

Garp doesn't do cats. Well, he would LOVE to encounter more cats but...

A stray came into my yard a couple months ago. It was over in about 15 seconds. I did my part and scanned for a chip, checked all the lost pet listings for the following weeks, etc, but found nothing. I had it cremated.

The thing scratched the crap out of his face and around his eyes though, and put a nice deep puncture in his chest.
