I used to think think the only difference between a silky and a yorkie was the color

I'm much better with large breeds than small breed in identifying, but I would venture to guess he's probably mixed or yorkie. Silkies really aren't all that common. I've seen tons of yorkies, but only one silky.

I see a difference and ear shape and thickness a bit. and possibly the eye set too is a bit different on silkies.

It's not a Yorkie

I'm not sure if this is unfortunately or fortunately, but the dog you have there is a Silky Terrier. The shorter coat, the size, and the spacing of the eyes, gives it away. But you can consider yourself lucky either way. A Silky is known to have a better temperament and pushes boundaries less than a Yorkie. Also, a Silky is much easier to train and that includes potty train. Either way, you got yourself a beautiful dog.

This an old thread of mine :)

I really think he's a Silky. But everyone else seems to think he's just an nonstandard badly bred Yorkie, lol. I had 6 AKC Silky breeders tell me he looks 99% Silky to them.

Thanks for your input. His shorter coat is due to me getting it shaved though....

I've found that a lot of people expect Yorkies to have a really dark steel grey coat and anything light grey is a Silky to them. Could just be his coat (which I love, btw. reminds me of the color of a weimaraner)
