I normally bring Alfie to the professional groomers to get his hair cut and anything else that I would not attempt to do. But I do bath him once a month and brush him. I bathed him last night and noticed this morning when I was brushing him that he has what looks like dandruff and he looks as if his have dry skin. I have always made sure to rinse him well.

I have also noticed that he has knots in his moustache and he just doesn't like me going there to brush. I know they are bad knots as they have been there when he was younger. I brought him to the groomers for her to take them out so that I can start a clean slate and keep him knot free but obviously she didn't do it. I will be taking him to another groomers soon to see if she can get him knot free there. But he just doesn't like me brushing him there and I do it as gently as I can.

Hi Alfiesmum, I'm a groomer, and the shop I work at sees a lot of Yorkies.

When you bathe Alfie, if your seeing flakes, he could probably use an oatmeal creme rinse, which would also help with the knots in his beard. The oatmeal will help soothe the skin and take care of the dandruff, and the conditioner in it will help loosen the knots in Alfie's beard, which should make him easier to brush for you. I'd offer to groom him myself, but your profile says you live in Ireland, and I'm all the way in Arizona. :(

Thats helps me as well, I have a 7month old Yorkie and I have noticed she has been having white flakes as well. I think I will have to pick up some Oatmeal wash if I don't have any in the cabinet at home!!

Thanks as well for the info!

About three years now. Two years show grooming Shelties, and Collies.
and one year doing pets. And i live way out in the boon docks and when i say pet grooming i mean...
shaving chows, doing matted up poodles, bichons, etc.
oh and of course de-ticking farm dogs!
Almost everything that comes in gets a number 10 body and number 5 face. Shihtzus, lasas, you name it! Thats what every one wants.

You've been in the business longer than me, but I get all the fun :eyeroll: people that want their dogs dyed and their nails painted and precious little bows put in their precious hair. -_-
I'm looking forward to getting to the shop in Illinois where they don't offer those services. :D I can just be a normal groomer.

we nail paint and do bows too. all dogs get bows or bandanas. And we dont let anyone know we nail paint unless the dog is great for their nails. then we will tell them.

We had (before the shop went over) people that would come in and say "Ok, i want this nail this color and this one this color, and if they don't perfectly match her coat I'm NOT paying!!" Talk about high maintenance!!! O.O
I love doing normal grooms, though. Schnauzer clips are my fave. :)
Whats yours?

Same as yours! I put matted up dogs in a schnauzer face all of the time. We did a bichon/poodle in number 7 with a schnauzer face, omg it was cute.

I am not sure. I know you can find it online. You can buy an oatmeal shampoo at petco, or petsmart that is for dry skin and helps

You CAN find it at a pet store, but I suggest a grooming supply store, like ryan's pet supply (just google it, it will come up as the first link) and you get more for your money. Get a gallon size, they can make as much as 20 gallons from the ONE you buy by mixing it properly with the right amount of water. :)

back to Yorkie grooming

Yay for you....brushing is one of the best things you can do for your dog. People come into the shop after not brushing their dog for 6 months and wonder why they have dandruff..... well all of that undercoat is holding in the dead skin cells. If you don't wash your own hair and brush it the same would happen to you. When you brush your dogs coat it takes out the undercoat, prevents matts and allows the skin to breathe thus making your dogs skin healthier in the long run. Yorkies are notoriously jittery little things (ya gotta love em) for grooming. You as the owner have to teach them how to behave. Start by gently holding his head and chin fur and praising him, Make a regular habit of it, give him treats. Pretty soon he wont mind anything being done with his face/chin because it has become a proud/happy moment for him.... I have seen dogs do an amazing turn about in 1 grooming session. Little dogs are like children, they will do anything for praise.
