would just anyone claim a dog?

I have been searching for these stray dogs' owners. I received a call from a sort of nearby town from a lady who vaguely described the dogs. She said they let a friend take the dogs (non-hunting breeds) hunting with him and he returned without the dogs. The description she provided could have been deducted from the descpription I posted. She said they "just waited until someone posted a found ad".
When I tried to call her back again for a more accurate description, no one answers the phone.
I have grown very attached to these two babies and do not intend to let them go to just anyone...especially to someone who would let someone else take them out for a oneway joyride.
No wonder the female is so weird about going outside.....

and perhaps it's not customary, but when should a person take the found dogs out of the circuit?

Maybe when you get a phone call warning you to not let the dogs go to a certain someone who is calling and trying to claim the dogs....such as an abusive person who already had dogs taken away by friends and by the police.:yikes:

(might be the reason why some of the ads and posters have been quickly removed or lost by the shelters and 'anonymous persons'.....)

Big babies have a good home here.................................

Yes sometimes people do just 'claim dogs' I would expect a better description. BUT its not really up to you to make the decision to not give them their dogs back. If they are there dogs you can likely 'charge' them for their stay with you. That often discourages them.
