Woman Leaves ‘Single Mom Sorry’ Tip on $138 Bill

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A photo of a receipt allegedly left by a single mother at a restaurant has gone viral after it was posted on Reddit.
According to FOX 8 in Greensboro, N.C., the bill, which shows a charge of $138.35, has a note that reads “single mom sorry†on the tip line – implying whoever signed the bill did not have enough money to tip the waiter or waitress.
The caption with the photo on Reddit reads: “I’m sure $140 could have gotten you and your kids a week worth of groceries, but instead you spend it one one meal?! For shame!â€

Reminds me of the people who buy the $20 dollar filet at the grocery store with their food stamps while holding a Coach purse then climbing into their Lexus (I see it ALL the time).

Yeah, I'm with Cali. Also, I know people like to treat themselves or whatever, but that is a heck of a lot of money for one meal. I don't think that's very economical

cut back on one extra during the meal and give a tip. I was a single mom and yet somehow I could find a way to pay a $5 dollar tip if I really HAD to go out or get something delivered. OR i got it to go or somewhere that didnt require a tip.

I will say MAYBE they couldnt go elsewhere (hence spending that to go out to eat) if it was a gift card but I would split that up into a couple meals and STILL figure out a tip.

First I say the writing looks nothing like the signature, to me it looks like 2 different people writing.

but if it's real, I think if you go out and get 140 dollar meal, you leave a tip. If you can't afford that, go spend 140 bucks at the grocery store.

We always tip, we usually have good service or better. I usually tip because I'm glad someone else is putting up with me and other customers, and I'm glad I'm not the one having to do it.

If you can't leave at least a little something then don't go to a restaurant where you know it would be expected and certainly don't go somewhere that would cost $140 and THEN use the single mom thing as an excuse to not tip. Cheap is what that is

Yeah, the waitress could well be a single mom too. But that's beside the point. If you can afford that much eating out, you ought to be able to afford a decent tip. I agree...if she's that poor to leave a tip, use the money for groceries instead. Some people are just rotten.

Eating out is a LUXURY. If you are choosing to make that expense, you should be ready to tip. Waitresses don't get minimum wage...tipping is what makes their wages.

Can't afford to tip? Order take-out, buy groceries, eat at HOME.

I will say again as Im thinking about it. I was given a 100 dollar gift card to a restaurant the christmas after I had Bev so I went out somewhere fancy and my tip wasnt much at all since the food was $$$$ but I at least attempted to leave a tip (it wasnt the normal percentage but I couldnt afford more then I left) but I left SOMETHING

EAT: It was only to ONE restaurant so I had no choice. I still have no clue why I was given it but hey the person was a tad strange so I refuse to try and understand them.

Who knows. If it is real, how trashy. If you can't afford to tip and feel like you MUST eat something other than your own cooking, go get take-out.

I honestly think my biggest issue would be less about the person leaving no tip, but more about them trying to make a sad attempt at an excuse for it. For that much food served (obviously with the bill it was a lot) you definitely should leave a tip. If you are not going to leave a tip at least own up to it and not try to hide behind a cowardly excuse!

I've not left tips before, but it's always (very unusual, but has happened) for horrible service. If the service is decent I'll leave at least something, better service = better tip.

I've done the same -- and told the manager why I didn't leave a tip or wrote it in the comments section if there was one.

BUT just wanted to throw in, a surprising number of restaurants will let you pay tip with a gift card. You can just ask. I usually get a ton of them at Christmas and on my birthday and if you are paying the full check with one a lot of times you can write in tips and they'll take it out of the card.

Yep Ive never been to one that doesnt. Thats what I usually do at least. We get a ton of them for Christmas for places like Chilis and what not. The one that I got for 100 was a local VERY fancy restaurant and you should have saw the look on their faces when I asked to do that. Especially when my friend and I shared a entree, appetizer and got 2 sodas.

I have been to dinner with people who have done this on 100$ bills. Been very embarrassed and left an even bigger tip myself. Now they did not write anything in but just the fact they do it is bad enough it's only McDonald's with them from now on.
