Winter coats

Now that it's getting colder out I have been thinking of getting Draco a winter jacket. We live in Wisconsin, and it gets pretty stinkin cold here. I have a fleece coat for quick outtings and general warmth in the house. I am looking for an active coat though. I don't really like the ones that just lay over the back as I feel they barely cover the chest. I like ones that wrap under the chest/abdomen as well. I want a coat mainly for active hikes in the snow. It doesn't need to be a blizzard coat as I wont be out in that. ;)

I was looking at the hurtta winter coats, but have heard mixed reviews (and am having trouble finding where to order). Anyone have other help? It seems like alot of the coats have no give in the back and when the dog runs the butt area flys up and wind would go under it...

Maybe one of the chillydogs coats?

I use a shedrow coat from Greenhawk - styled like a horse blanket. It doesn't offer much protection for the underbelly and my dog is practically nude so she wears a set of four-legged fleece PJs underneath. But I assume you don't want or need that much coverage with a poodle.
 
Bailey and Gabby have ruff wear coats that keep them plenty warm in MN winters. Diego who is a tiny skinny thing has a Chilly Dogs coat. He needed the neck warmer and extra coverage over his butt.
 
I adore the Hurtta coats. They have discontinued the old style and I ahven't had my hands on a new one yet, but may order one for Meg soon. I buy through Clean Run.

By far the sturdiest, best fitting dog coats I have found for my very active dogs in the winter. And unlike the others I have tried, they don't shift sideways or restrict their movement.
 
I also love Hurtta coats. P has one and it is amazing and I love how it goes on/fits. I want one for Auggie too, but they are so expensive and Auggie no longer travels where he needs one, nor does he do outdoor activities for long when it's cold. I will definitely be getting one for the dagger baby when he is done growing though.
I bought one for my sister's dog too, because he is a big baby and gets cold easily, so he can play outside when it's cold in his Hurtta. And like BB said, it doesn't restrict movement so he is free to play away.

I love them. And they are definitely toasty warm.
 
Love my hurtta coats!! Keeps the short coated sensitive beasts nice and toasty.
 
Chillydogs! Fit well with the deep chested poodle bodies!
 
I have never used one but as Indy gets more work and needs to be outside for longer periods in winter I may eventually. It will be a Hurtta or Chillydogs if I have the money for that, or if I need to go cheaper one of the horse blanket-inspired coats made by various tack companies like Dover Saddlery and Weatherbeeta.
 
I have a Ruffwear Cloudchaser - the sleeves tend to rub the fur on both Riley and Michaela's legs, and I had to take a tuck in the underside, because it was too loose and too long underneath. Riley peed into the coat the first time he wore it. It doesn't fit every dog and they don't have a lot of choice in sizes, especially if your dog falls in-between (Riley was too big for one size and not quite long enough in the body for the next size up, hence the tuck). I don't use it a lot, but keep it in case I need something in a pinch (and who knows? Maybe the next dog...) I'd probably use it more on Michaela if the sleeves didn't rub her legs so much.

I also have a Chillydogs winter coat - I like it except it tends to slide to one side on Riley and the fleece neckpiece picks up burrs easily.

I had a Weatherbeeta 1200D parka for Riley that I liked a lot, it had a high collar, wrapped around the chest and underside, had hindleg straps and didn't slide. It finally died last spring. It is kind of a stiff coat, which some people don't like, but that never bothered Riley.

I do have a hurtta winter coat for Riley, although Michaela might get it now that she's just about his size. The color is supposed to be raspberry - don't be fooled, it's pink. I like it though, and so does Riley.

I now have horse-style blankets for both Riley and Michaela (from Motley Mutt), both have belly wraps, double buckle fronts and are water-proof. They're not the heaviest coats but there's room to put the thick fleece coats from Dover (were on sale for 9.99) underneath for extra insulation.
 
Another vote for the shedrow coats. We sell both the hurtta and them at work. Both are good coats. But in my experience the shedrows are a fair bit warmer. And cheaper. At least the basic hurtta coats. Kinda like the difference between a light weight trench coat vs a thick bomber jacket.
 
Thanks to this thread, I've just ordered $300 worth of coats from Chillydog ...... lol!
 
I am a big fan of hurtta winter jackets as well. So well made, fit my dogs great, toasty warm.
 
As an aside. At work we won't be carrying Hurtta anymore as they just don't sell well enough to keep them. (we have a chain of tack and pet shops across canada) I just found out yesterday.

They are nice and well made but too expensive (at least here) compared to other options. When you can buy a nice horse blanket for less...
 
i think you can look for it on amazon it have many kinds of choices to you
