I got called pathetic by my MIL when I point blank refused to leave Lilly in the car in summer. Call me what you like, I'm not leaving her to die.

It's so frustrating! When we traveled to trials there were some pretty warm days where the dogs were crated while we had to eat etc... BUT they had water, crate fans and if it was that freakin hot we didn't leave them at all! kept them in the A/C in the car even to run in for a pee!

Let alone in that kind of heat, windows up, no water to go SHOPPING!!

As long as you are on the phone with/have already called authorities, you are legally allowed to break a window to help a dog in distress in the summer. Especially he last couple years they have really cracked down on stuff like that. I've had to break windows a couple times the last few years... Haven't been arrested yet

I've had to stop a few times to pick up stuff with the dogs in the car. I've left the AC on and Cider is spazzy at the best of times. While I think this story is tragic as h*ll, too many 'do-gooders' are out there having a fit about any animal regardless of weather or condition of ones car. I've come back to a crowd of morons discussing breaking my windows, yet my ACis on high, and it's chilly in my car. There likely isn't carte blanche for going around freeing animals in cars because it's summer. Often people wait forever and the dog dies.

^ You call them morons but how are they supposed to know you have your AC on?

If some one chooses to leave their dog in the car, you need to be prepared some one may worry and for good reason. I think some one should have better judgement though if it isn't hot out and the dog is in the car.

My Prius is silent when running most of the time, it's super frustrating because I've had two people bitch me out that the car is off and the dogs are screaming like they're dying. No, they're threatening to kill you if you touch my car, the windows are closed for your safety.

I totally respect the issue and appreciate people caring but I understand the frustration.

That said here in Vegas if the car is *off* and a child or animal is inside and unattended you can legally break in.

I agree some are being over the top, car running with A/C? Leave it alone

Even if no AC, if the dog is clearly ok and the person ran to a bank machine or something ..... And is right back... Leave it alone...

I have watched a few times, in very hot weather and the owner comes back right away, that's different and I obviously would not say anything...

But if I saw a dog in obvious distress, windows up, car not running, and no one to be seen.... I could not just stand by and watch the dog die...

I once took a huge trip to the vet with all 4 of my dogs and all 4 of my cats in my small, run down car to weigh them all. I left my cats in the car while we weighed the dogs and it was a little hot. I had all windows down and left them in there momentarily. I come back to some Vet Tech screaming at me and telling me I'm a horrible pet owner and shes going to call AC because one of my cats is panting. (He stresses and pant all the time, heat or no.) I just think some people need to take a second before jumping to conclusions about why an animal is in the car and what sort of conditions they are in. Not just immediately "OMGITSHOTDOGISGOINGTODIE CUZ IT HAS A HORRIBLE OWNER!"

I would like to think most people could tell when a dogs in distress, but sadly that's likely not true...

Hybrids are common enough now, people should be able to tell, but that's a good point! Maybe a sign so people do know the car is running? I know you don't have to, but it may save someone unnecessarily worrying...

I am not so insane I go after a dog left for a minute, but hear too many stories of dogs that no one helped, too afraid to break a window, etc... I often wonder how many die that no one see?

If no one came fast, and the dog was in obvious distress... Car is locked up tight in the sun.. Sorry about your window...

I don't like people who jump to conclusions.... Dealt with that when trialing...

But if you are at a mall, no one in sight, the car windows up, in 30 degree weather, in full sunlight and your dog is passed out or close from heat exhaustion... Well...

It happens far to often around here!

ETA general "You" by the way...

Oh no I totally agree and have considered a window sign. I am thinking something clever that explains working dog on board, ac running, windows up for your safety. For now though I'm just super careful to avoid the situation, honestly it stresses my boy out too much having people leer at or touch my car so it's better for him to avoid more often than not.

I often have a cat carrier in our car for the ferrets. You know, the big kind that would fit a large cat or small dog.

A few times I have come out to people standing by the car, staring in, waiting to yell at me for "leaving my pet" in the heat. Once, I've had a cop standing there waiting to talk to me -- they didnt SEE an animal in distress so had to reason to break in, thank god.

Now I just leave a note saying "no animal left unattended in car" on the window.

I've often wondered, had that cop broken the window to rescue the empty carrier, if insurance would cover it or anything.

This story was sad, but I don't get why someone would take the dog to the mall just to leave it in the car for hours.

I've had to break a window once (with mall police there) to get a dog out of the car. A lady left her black lab in her black car with black upholstery and no AC or water, on the hottest day of the year a few years back. I saw the dog when I went into the mall for a short errand and when I came back 5-10 minutes later the dog was still there. I let the mall security know and they tried to page the owner through a mall announcement. After 15 minutes of no reply the mall police had to call emergency services and they told them to break the window because they couldn't make it for another 45 minutes (I ended up having to break the window because the mall cops were all worried about being sued). I stuck around for as long as I could after the dog was out, but got the mall security phone number and called periodically throughout the day. Apparently 4 hours later the lady showed up at mall security to report that her car had been broken into and that her dog had been stolen. The mall cop that I spoke to, who was there at the time and is a HUGE dog lover, said that he told her she would be lucky if the dog were stolen because it could have been dead, then he handed her the number to the local police and animal control and told her that they had her dog. Apparently she was pissed because now she had to go down to animal control to get her dog back, I guess a dead dog would have been much more convenient for her.

On the same note, I have to agree that a lot of people that see a dog in a car go straight into "OMG there's a dog in a car, it's going to DIE! Get it out, get it out!" mode. There's a guy that works in the same building that I work in that used to leave his dog in his van so that no one would steal his tools. This dog had it's own fan, water, food and cooling pet bed. The guy would also check on the dog every 20 minutes to make sure it was ok and to let it our to stretch it's legs. I came out on break one day to find a group of 4 or 5 people huddled around his van contemplating on breaking the window because the dog was "in distress and could die at any minute" (the dog was just sitting in the front seat watching all of the people gathering around the car). I pointed out the clearly working fan and water which dispersed the crowd except one woman who was adamant that the dog was going to die. Then the owner came out and she gave him an earful about how he was trying to kill his dog, he shouldn't have a dog and blah, blah, blah. So he proceeded to let the dog out of the van but told her to stand near the door. The look on her face was priceless when the cool air from inside the van hit her and she walked off in a huff!

In suburban NJ animal control will absolutely pop the lock, and the owner will owe the locksmith plus the fine plus the court costs if they take custody of the dog.

If it's a lock system they can't get through, the black n' whites will be waiting for the owner when they get back to their car. Something they take seriously around here.

You never know though. I could leave my car on but I don't have ac. My fans work so if Yoshi is near the front you'd see her fur moving from the air movement but it would still be pretty hot.

And it may just me because I'm always hot but when the car isn't moving not all ACs stay cool. Fine for a few minutes but definitely not for an extended amount of time.

And I know it's a pain for people who are being responsible but I'd much rather hear about how people were inconvenienced by crazy people than that a ton of dogs died over the summer because people just didn't care enough to say/do anything.

My family had a childhood dog die after being left in a car, and it was truly horrible (road trip so we were all present, and it was an unsettling scene to say the least). My parents thought they took appropriate precautions but it wasn't enough.

So dogs in cars scares the crap out of me. If my dog is in the car and it's warm out, even if I'm running out to grab a coffee, the A/C is running.

Grace and I have a Field workshop soon and apparently people work out of their cars (with appropriate precautions, including fans). I may still be the a-hole who runs the A/C. Kinda freaked out.

Tangent -- any recommendations for solar car shades (like to wrap the car in) from people who participate in a lot of dog activities?
