This was in my local paper a few days ago. I'm so relieved the dog is expected to do a full recovery. Maybe I have too much anger in me but if someone did that to MY dog, it'd be worse than just the 6 shots  But then again, a whole debate could be started on this.. no thanks, I'll pass!

BTW, here, cop dogs are considered to be an actual COP.

He was a criminal in the act of commiting a crime and he assulted a police animal and caused injury to said animal that was doing his job. Thank heavens no officer was injured and that the dog will recover. As for the criminal too bad sooo sad tough stuff. Can you tell where I stand???

I agree ... if he hadn't stabbed the dog, he wouldn't have to worry about getting shot! Actions have consequences!!
I can imagine being caught in the moment and feeling a strong rage against somebody who shot my dog, and there's no doubt I would be acting excessively
But at the same time I have to say: I've never been shot before, but holy cow won't one (or maybe two) bullets do the trick??

The police practiced Restorative Justice - eye for an eye..

in this case an eye for a leg/arm/foot/ear/nose/finger lol

but ya know what, you never know WHAT exactly happened in that scenario as well. Reports never seem to get 100% of their stories accurate and are only looking for the "juicy details".

For all we know, the criminal could have been trying to flee the scene, he could have been shot in just the legs to take him down (I didn't read the full article btw), he could have tried to go at one of the other officers.

It isnt the job of the police to administer justice, that is for the courts. I dont like dogs being used to fix human problems. The dog was stabbed because he was raised and trained to do exactly what he did and it is most peoples reaction to defend themselves from a dog attack by any means avaliable. To me the offence was not worth someone being shot 6 times, a dog stabbed and a cops neck on the chopping block.

A police dog was stabbed to death here in Aus a few months ago, and the guy who did it was charged with assaulting a police officer. Obviously couldn't get him for murder, but I hope he gets jail time for that.

The media does tend to overstate things, but the guy needed to be stopped from hurting the dog, but I reckon 6 bullets is way overkill!!!

Well if the guy wasn't doing something stupid, the dog wouldn't have been used. Soooooooooo, the guy was just asking for extreme measures and he got it. On the other hand, the dog was just doing his job, and I see no reason not to protect your partner..........human or k9!! The dog was not out of control but was following commands from his human partner, and was brutally attacked.............. by a sh*tball. I still will only add....... I am very glad Wizzard will make a full recovery.:)

Not only did he attact the dog but he also threatened the police and I'm pretty sure he would have been considered armed and dangerous right after that:

But inside the house, Steele allegedly confronted police with a knife before fleeing out a bathroom window.

It almost sounds like the lady doesn't care that he stabbed a dog. She just kept going on about parole violations. Poor Wizzard:(

Hmm, that is a weird situation. Since a dog is a police officer I put the scenario in my head this way.

Police officer goes after the guy after hes warned they are police and he runs, suspect is armed with a knife and stabs the police officer. The stabbed officer is bleeding profusely, still on top of the suspect who is trying to stab him. Another officer freaks out and starts shooting until his clip is empty.

I look at it like that. If the guy would not have ran it wold not have happened, but when an animal is on you and biting you and you have a knife in your hand, of course you are gong to try and protect yourself. Thats the difference between a regular police office and a police dog, the officer does not bite.

I think when you are that scared, your partner is getting stabbed to death you can easily over react and pull the trigger more than necessary. I don't think we can judge on the number of shots unless you have been in a life and death situation with your friend was on the floor bleeding bleeding to death.

I can see why the guy was shot - he was a knife-wielding threat - but 6 shots at what must have been pretty close range does seem excessive. The mother's indignation is understandable, but he wasn't shot for parole violations or for fleeing the police, but for pulling a knife on a cop and stabbing a police dog. In short, he was an idiot. Though I have sympathy for his situation as far as stabbing the dog goes - it is natural reaction to defend yourself from an animal. You might trust a human not to kill you if you give up, but it's much harder to believe that a dog is not going to rip your throat out.

I can see why the dog attacked. I can see why the cop fired. I can see why the guy stabbed the dog, but I can also understand how someone raised in the hood with no chance of getting a fair shake in the world would turn to drug selling. We want it illegal which makes the price go way up. It makes the uneducated able to earn well. Its a vicious circle. He grows up uneducated and sees the easy way out. He gets involved in the drug game. He goes to jail. He comes out older, meaner, madder and still uneducated, so whats he going to do? I certainly hope that if I ever have to face a jury it isnt made up of you folks lol. I can sit back and hate "bad" people, but if my genetics and enviroment were the same, I would be one.

What Buckshot said.

And, just so you know, if you ever face a jury, it will be made up of the unemployed, the unemployable, the elderly, courthouse and cop groupies, punishment fetishists and anyone who isn't important enough to get out of jury duty. The DA's office will make sure to weed out anyone who might actually look at the case through the lens of law instead of emotion.

And before anyone gets in an uproar, the prosecution wins over 85% of the time in a criminal case.

You know, I've actually shown up for jury duty, and the judge laughed and told me to just forget it - the DA would never let me sit on a jury. The DA thought it was pretty funny and told me later that it was true - the last person any DA wants on a jury is someone who won't cave in to peer pressure. He did tell me anytime I wanted to switch sides he'd be glad to have me work for him though, lol! We are lucky that we have pretty fair DAs who usually do try to do right by the system.

I would have emptied the clip then reloaded. Panic would set in for me as soon as I saw someone stabbing my dog.
