I have a new 9 week old Britt. Spaniel that I am trying to crate train. He whines in his crate even if I put toys, treats, my t-shirt, etc. I take him out to do his business, praise him for going in his spot, put him in his crate (he won't go in unless I help him), and then turn a fan on and put it next to his crate before going off to bed. He usually cries for at least 30 min. before whinning himself to sleep. This has been going on for a week now and my apartement neighbors are taking note. What can I do? Anyone?

Try putting an old T-shirt well permeated with your scent in the crate with him. Also, get a couple of Kongs to stuff with peanut butter and freeze. The reason you get two is so that you have one in the freezer and one to put in the crate each night. That should help. Let us know how it goes!

Sometimes it just takes some time for them to get used to it, and I know that is hard living in an apartment and on your neighbor's time also. But Brady did that for a while when we first crate trained him, and now he happily walks in there at bed time, or anytime he is really tired. It was easier for us though, because we sleep upstairs in our haouse and his crate is downstairs. He knows that is his serious sleeping spot and no one will bother him if he goes in there. Also maybe try a ticking clock instead of a fan, it can ermind them of their mother's heartbeat. I am trying to remember, but I think it took him 2 or 3 weeks to get used to it. It will really be worth it for you when your pup finally learns that is "his" place.
