A discussion in a different thread got me thinking about which breeds I consider to be the biggest shedders. I wash and brush a ton of dogs at work, so my frame of reference is how much fur comes off a dog during that process. The consistently biggest hair factories I see are:

1. Great Pyrenees from show lines. There is no comparison. Holy crap, you have no idea. Words fail. Also brushes of all sorts. We have a regular client at work that comes in every couple of weeks and graces us with several pounds of fluff. These guys are an order of magnitude worse than the anything else I've ever laid eyes on.

2. Huskies. Everyone's favorite hair tornados. Point the forced air dryer at them just right and you can make a hair cannon to hit your coworkers.

3. Goldens from show lines. I don't even think there's a dog under there, it's just fur all the way down.

4. Some doodles. Which is ironic. They can have epic undercoats that put their retriever parent to shame. I never fail to lecture them on their duties as a magical non-shedding doodle.

5. Rough collies. Is that a shy puppy hiding under the picnic table in the daycare yard? No, it's just a tumbleweed the size.of a cocker spaniel.

Which breeds or types do you find are the biggest fur producers?

I judge this based on hair in kennels in the morning, and hair in daycare.

Labs.
Shepherds.
Huskies.

In that order.

Having worked at a shelter... Labs and Lab mixes especially black labs. After cleaning kennels on a daily basis when I sprayed out their kennel pre scrubbing while they were outside there would be a kennel full of black hair everywhere.

Yep.

Poorly groomed/fed golden hair is a nightmare. Hair EVERYWHERE....grooming goldens that only came in once or twice a year made me feel like I was suffocating. However, regularly groomed goldens (who I'm certain were on a better diet) weren't nearly as bad. Still kind of heavy for that coat type.

Huskies. We had a husky foster when I was a kid and holy hair hell. It didn't help that she hadn't been brushed regularly in a long time but even then... whole fistfuls regularly came off of her. I think it got better the longer she was on a good diet but when she came to us it was insane.

Kuvasz. Hands down. They are in the same category as great pyrs. The one I fostered produced more dust buffalos in one day than my friends household of 10 collies and 1 GSD produced in an entire week.

My Caucasian Ovcharka sheds more than any dog I've ever seen. I've never seen anything like it. I love the breed and the personality, but the hair is really something else.
