Always wanted an Ibizan Hound and a Border Collie... got my border collie (mix) and maybe one day I'll end up with an Ibizan Hound.

I always wanted a Great Dane or an English Mastiff. I still want a Dane (a lot! my dream dog!), but one, my oldest dog is scared of huge dogs and would HATE it, and two I'm intimidated by the short lifespan and high vet bills. As for the mastiffs or other guardians, I don't think I'm outgoing enough to properly socialize a more naturally suspicious breed to strangers, and I tend to need dogs that are friendly social butterfly types.

So that's a futuremaybe on the Dane and a no on the mastiff.

Well, all dogs have the potential for high vet bills. As for the dane, you can get well bred ones that will last a good 14 or 15 years barring any accidents.

And you could get an outgoing adult mastiff from a rescue. My aunt had a secondhand bull mastiff named bart and he was a social butterfly. ;)

My sister and I both wanted a golden retreiver. Badly. We shared a room, and we went through a phase where every night during our betime prayer, we'd ask God to bring us a golden retriever. This went on for about 5 years.

But we did get one eventually! My dearly beloved Tigger. She was a wonderful family dog and perfect for us at that time of our lives. I'm not sure if I'll ever own another golden, but I will always have a soft spot for them.

Who out there is breeding Danes with such an amazing lifespan? Whoa.

I am no stranger to high vet bills (the dog in my sig is most likely going to need a total hip replacement in a few years), but everyone that I know with Danes takes it to another level entirely -- and that's not even counting the higher cost of routine preventative things like Frontline and heartworm preventatives. (Or, for that matter, food.) Big dogs cost more. :)

My shelter "pit bull" clearly has some big headed, big boned mastiff heritage somewhere in his ancestry. Does that count for anything? ;)

This gal doesn't breed anymore, but she does have TONS of health info on the breed, well, large breeds in general.

My neighbor's dane died a few years ago of a heart attack at 14. He was a rescue, so I don't know what lines he came from. I'm sure the dane folks on the forum can help steer you in the right direction though.

I always wanted a Doberman growing up...still one of my favorite breeds and I certainly would love to own one someday. I remember going through a Dalmatian phase too for a while... I have no interest in ever owning one now though.

When I was a kid I desperately wanted an English springer spaniel! I still think they're lovely but as I got older I wanted a bigger dog. I'd like an Old English Sheepdog one day but am pretty happy with my Dal right now. :)

When I wasa kid we always had dogs. I would beg for a doberman but my parents refused. I love my giant breeds now and will never be without a Saint.

And on a side note, yes there are great giant breed breeders out there who do produce dogs with excellent health, like the Great Dane, BUT giant breeds do cost more to own. When they do require vetting it costs more, they eat more, and we even had to buy a bigger car (minivan) to move ours around in comfortably!

German Shepherd.

I knew I'd NEVER get one, though, because my mother was petrified of them.

Nanny (my mother's mother, lol) came through for me when she gave me my choice of the two pups she had, a beautiful black Lab pup and a German Shepherd pup - she knew which one I'd choose, especially since I'd spent most of a summer rehabbing the Shepherd pup's mother. And that is how we came to have Purdue, whom my mother adored ;)

Maybe you could try adopting one of those k9 shelter dogs.
Im sure your mom would pity those homeless ones, and once you clean them up and give them their vaccinations they'll be permissible at home too!
