Quick question - I have a boy and girl 11 week old pups that won't be spayed/neutered until they are 4 - 6 months. When do I need to separate them to be sure they can't breed? It may sound early to some of you...but their mom (a stray) had them at 10 months so we're not taking any chances!

Usually females don't reach sexual maturity until 5-6 months at the earliest. It can be later depending on time of year and hereditary factors.
Males don't usually reach sexual maturity until 8-9 months of age. If you get them fixed (start with her by 6months) on time then you shouldn't need to worry about it at all.

Puppies should be separated for sleep, napping, and for separate play times with you by 12 weeks of age. If they are not separated for periods of time at about this age, they can form too strong of a bond with each other, and may be less likely to form strong bonds with humans.

Separation from littermates is an important part of the growing up process for puppies.

I begin separating my puppies into pairs or 3s in crates for sleeping and nap times at about 6 weeks. At 8 weeks, they get their own crates for sleeping and napping. ( That's right....My puppies go to their new homes crate trained....AND leash trained. ;) )

The puppies I keep are rotated so they have different playmates each day.

Thanks guys, we just went to the vet today and because they're large breeds the vet wants to spay/neuter at 5 months (our guy has to get neutered at 4 months because of a pretty bad umblicial hernia).

OK - I must know your secret - crate trained at 8 weeks? Housebroken too? or just crate trained???

We had 5 puppies, 2 have gone to new homes, 1 we're keeping and 1 is living with us for a few months...the last one we're waiting for the hernia surgery before we give him up...anyway the only housebroken ones are the 2 that left...but the 3 we have LOVE the crate.
