I think mine would have to be coonhounds. I typically like quiet, biddable dogs, but something about those hound eyes and ears just makes me melt.

Briards.

I hate grooming. HATE IT. I'm not a fan of furry dogs. I'm not really into herding breeds either, as a general rule. BUT, I worked for a briard breeder/exhibitor for several years before moving away and I have been hopelessly in love with the breed ever since.

They are not a good match for me or my lifestyle, but I miss having those big shaggy lugs in my life.

I keep telling myself one day I will have one in my home again. I am apparently insane. :p

Honestly, I think Bull Terriers...I don't think I will ever be interested in going out and getting one. I have seen really extreme DA ones, and I just don't think it would ever be a good idea-but I do LOVE them.

Also sight and scenthounds (greyhounds, whippets, coonhounds). Although I think I will have one of each in the far off future.

I resisted spaniels for so so long, and now...I think I will absolutely have one. Hopefully a Field Spaniel, but for the right cocker I would do it.

Please tell me everyone has one. You like a certain type of dog. You want dogs in your life for certain things. And then there's this one dog that calls to you despite being so NOT those things.

For me, I like terriers. I like others, but terriers really do it for me. I like other dogs that have similar oomph as terriers. I want a dog as a long distance running partner and hiking partner (as in mountains, not woodland trails.) I want a biking partner that never tires. I want a dog that can go hardcore all day and still be ready to take on the world. I want to get serious into agility. Maybe IPO if I get the right dog. I actively dislike most Lab/Golden temperaments because it lacks a sharpness I need. I like drivey, fast, lean, athletic dogs.

And Basset Hounds.

Don't ask me why, they are just an outlier that has always been. :D
We seem to like the same type of dog :) any dog who doesn't have that edge and isn't drivy, always ready to so something but cool with just chilling (as long as its needs have been met) is almost an annoyance to me. I hate to say it but its true. I know this is going to sound conceded, but I like dogs who want to "serve" and are always like "what can I do for you?"

Josefina is always in my face, esp when I am having trouble, like when I couldn't get my weed eater started yesterday and was cursing and carrying on (after getting sprayed in the face by gasoline by a primer button I didn't know was cracked lol). Being raised with me has made her accustomed to my outbursts (which are NEVER directed at the animals, I might add ... but I will admit to taking it out on a few inanimate objects LMBO).

Yeah but bassets are the logs of the dog world IMO. the ones I have seen just cant be trained, if they don't want to do something there is no motivating them. plus they bark ... a lot, and for someone like me to be irritated by barking, that's something since I am into herding breeds LOL.

I like to groom, but I would prefer shedding to grooming, I have a really good vacuum.

That's why they are the "huh?" breed. LOL I dislike baying and hounds in general. I love Bassets. I can actually listen to a Basset bay and I'm all like, "Oh, that's okay." :p I fostered a Basset once and I would have kept him if I could have! (Actually, if he was a common "type" in the breed, I'd probably seek one out. He was great. Social, not too loud, very people oriented, perfect size/build, and I liked his legs. Not too short and not crooked! He also let me give him a bath and trim his nails with minimal fuss, which is a Big Deal for a Basset. LOL He was the one dog who's fast pace was the same as mine on walks, too. Hahaha)

I've seen a few in rally, and there was one doing full courses at my agility club! He was slow but his owner was slow too, it was a good match (they were pretty good together).

Daisy did rally & obe until her back injury forced her into retirement. She was always in the top of her obedience classes and almost never wore a leash. Until she started going a little senile she was nearly silent for years (now she's a crotchety old loudmouth). She's small and fit and used to love hiking. Not that I think she's necessarily the norm for the breed, but there was another lady in PA that did competitive obedience with her bassets... and every year at premier a group called "agility bassets" shows up - they're usually packing like 3 or 4 bassets that compete in agility :)

Dobermans.

Because HAIR. Because dog aggression potential. Because protective instincts freak me out after having a Fila in my house for a week. Because it's impossible to rent with one. Because I'd have to buy one little pajamas in the winter. Because swimming.

But despite all my fears and my reservations, after THIS MANY YEARS, I still want a Dobe to be my next dog. I really do. Every time I'm completely honest with myself, my indecision over other potential breeds is really just because I don't want another breed as much. I think there are quite a few breeds that suit me better in terms of wants (dog park dog, off-leash potential, swimmer, long hair or non-shedding), but I've been obsessed with Dobes for nearly a decade now, and it's not going away.

Nearly every breed I look at requires me to go to a breeder, and every time I think of spending the freaking money on a puppy I just. . . no.

I think mine would be a border collie. I want one so, so badly. But I'm horrible at training and never competed in any dogs sports so I wouldn't be able to work with one and give the dog what it needs.

Another would be border terriers. I'm not a small dog person but I want one so badly! One day..

Edit: Oh, and english sheepdogs. I'm not sure what it is about them that just makes me want one. Dat scruff.

Catahoulas, I think are absolutely my 'huh' breed (which is funny because I had them my whole life).

All my other favorite breeds are soft, biddable, herders. And then there's these crazy, screaming, coon-killing curs that I just adore for no apparent reason. :p

God me too, OH has a friend who is a rancher and breeds BC's, but the "hard core" kind who work cattle ... And the litter he recently bred is ready to go (he keeps them til 10-12 weeks so he can better evaluate them ... Whatever, to each their own I guess). He only breeds every couple of years if that and has AWESOME dogs with solid temperaments, not "go go go OMG always have to be working!!!" Neurotic temperaments.

But GAH! The logical side of me says I need another dog like I need a hole in my head, but this little voice keeps whispering "**** it, go for it." :wall:

Although it's not likely to happen because there are so many breeds that are a better fit, I could see myself with a Samoyed someday. I don't know why I find them so enchanting, but I do.

I also really like beagles, but not enough to entertain owning one. Same goes for most scent hounds, really!

I have a weird thing for LH Chihuahuas... so does the boyfriend, so we may very well end up with one in the future if we want a small dog!

The only dog that I OMG DESPERATELY WANT that doesn't fit my usual preferences is the Bernese Mountain Dog. They are one of my very favorites. I've met so many, and loved them all. Just really charming, sweet, amazing dogs. I hate the health problems, but I love them so much I'll probably suck it up eventually.

That's what keeps me away from the Rottweiler and the Doberman, the health and sometimes, temperament problems.

I am usually not "OMG WANT!" When it comes to dogs, but I have puppy fever ... Baaaaaad.

Aussies. Because HOLY HAIR EVERYWHERE! Because aside from them, I don't like herders.

Any and all Nordic breeds. I am not the right person for them, but love them so much.

Staffies. DA. BSL. Not a bully person. But WANT!

Pugs, Frenchies, Boston Terriers. I hate snoozing. I don't like cleaning the face. I want a dog who can be active and still breathe. I live in Florida. But they have some of the best temperaments out there. And they're so **** cute.

Paps. Not a toy dog person at all. Hate yapping. Grooming. But so smart and love the temper.

Xolos. I like dogs with fur, and I live in Fl. But I have a strange fascination with them.

I love houlas and other curs, but they are too human friendly for me and they just aren't as sensible as the Aussies and the BCs and the ACDs. They does NOT mean they aren't great dogs, because they are, really. But they are just ... Different.

Also, other then Aussies and BCs , and bullies, cur mixes are what the shelters are filled with.

Rottweilers.

I actually adore the breed but when I was a kid, my neighbors had a male rottie who was extremely protective and vicious. One day I was walking home from school and the dog had his entire head and one leg out of their falling apart wooden picket fence. I remember the dog foaming at the mouth and barking at me and I was scared for my life because I thought if I ran, the dog would've got out and attacked me. Luckily, the owners came and got the dog. From that day on, I was terrified of every Rottie I ran into though one I met was a big sweetheart and just wanted belly rubs.

I love everything about Rottweilers but their protective nature may be a tad bit intense for me despite being raised around Shar Pei and Cane Corsos which are protective breeds as well.
