Just curious. Wesley is constantly up in your face whining pitifully if you eat in front of him, and he's the biggest counter surfing / food stealing opportunist I have ever seen. He's like a crocodile hahaha. Feist on the other hand, could not care less about people when they're eating and will go off and do her own thing. She can sit near you on the couch while you're eating, and you wouldn't even notice her. Leaves food on the coffee table alone. A very nice change I must say. I think it helps that when she was younger she was tethered in the corner of the room while people ate dinner, so her default is to just hang out. Drinks on the other hand...she loves her tea. :p

So your guys?

Pretty much obsessed lol. He will stare at you, he will lay his head down on your lap, he wants everyone to know HE IS STARVED. lol...

If not being watched, he will definitely take the opportunity to jump on a table and eat any leftovers. It's why I've had to be really strict about remembering to pick up after ourselves lol.

Well, Caleb's a Lab, so food is of the utmost importance. But we're able to eat in front of him with nothing more him sitting right in front of you staring (we eat in the living room most nights). And that ends with an "Uh uh" or "Go lay down". When we're fixing something at the kitchen counter, he sits at a 90 degree angle to us, watching intently, just hoping we'll pass something to him. He'll head to anything dropped, but, for the most part, I can call him off it with "Leave it". When we do eat at the table, he lays down. He used to lay down on the rug by the table, but that got tossed after Sandy hit, and hasn't been replaced. So now he starts out where the rug was, then moves to the doorway where there's carpet to lay on.

ETA- I can leave food on the couch or even on the floor, tell Caleb "Leave it", walk out of the room for something and the food will still be there when I get back.

Obsessed, annoying and in your face. Especially when he knows someone will feed him (um KEN). Ken taught him all of his horrible awful manners. I guess at this point Im just happy he stays of of the table (for the most part).

After spending some time at my parents house his default is to put his head down. If I'm eating on the couch and tell him to "get off" he will put his head down and plead pitifully.

He looks something like this:

Frodo sits right by your feet and stares at you while you eat, and at the slightest opportunity will steal your food, even right out of your hand.

Siri is much better and leaves people alone for the most part when they are eating. From the start I said I didn't want another Frodo, and we never give her food from our plates. I will give her like...raw veggies and deli meat pieces when I am cooking in the kitchen or whatever, but want to be left alone when eating off a plate.

We kennel them both when we eat because easier.

Also, they will try and resource guard us from each other if we have food. So dogs are put away before food comes out, because it just makes like easier.

Horrible. Meg at least just sits around looking hopeful. Gusto will use reach his little paws out and try to redirect food into his mouth, or shove his head under your arm when you are trying to eat (I'm amazed nobody has chipped a tooth on a fork yet). Both back off pretty nicely when it is just me, but they abuse my mother terribly. Because she always gives in.

Depends who's eating it. My dad gives him scraps, way too many scraps. Thus Tucker is terrible with him. He whines and paws at him and will sometimes bark, it's awful and disruptive. Luckily it only happens when we eat in the living room because the sorts of things we eat in there (pizza and other take out) are the things dad gives him WHILE we're eating. So he's fine at the kitchen table until we finish, because then he gets scraps only at the end of the meal, not during it. If I am eating he doesn't seem to even notice, he knows he's not getting anything. He can be kind of bad with guests, he's really bad with my brother's girlfriend but that's because she talks to him when he begs so he gets excited thinking she's about to feed him. But with me, my mom, and my brother he's wonderful.

He will eat unattended food, but isn't super quick about it, everyone would have to leave the room. He used to be a complete stealing ninja but we mostly fixed that. The only thing he snatches are wrappers.

Uhm, Buzz is as terrible as terrible can be. He has stolen food off plates many times. He gives no cares.

Bailey is generally great. Doesn't care about food on the dinner table or the counter. Has to be reminded about food on a coffee table.

Gabby doesn't care.

They are all very good, as food obsessed as they are. Stay out of the way. Unless you're eating an apple, then Juno will sit at your feet and drool.

Leo begs with his eyes and will definitely come over to gaze longingly at the food if you eat it within his reach (he isn't allowed in the kitchen, so this only happens if we happen to eat in the living room). But he is not insistent, and if you tell him no, he will lie down and stop begging.

He is inconspicous to the point that he sometimes is able to steal food because we forget about him. My roommate has lost half a poptart before, because she completely forgot about him and placed her plate on the floor while we were watching TV. He ever so slowly and carefully snuck it off the plate :rofl1:

He doesn't countersurf though, which is nice. Only things that are right in front of his nose are in danger of being taken.

There is a reason why at almost 9 Ivan is crated during meals. He is horrible about food, he will steal it from your hand, drool, whine, counter surf. He.is.a.total.PIG. about food.
Peewee used to be good, if it wasn't given to him he wouldn't eat it. Apparently in his mind old age gives him a free pass for begging and sticking his nose on my dinning room table when there is food on it now.
Phoebe, pretty much goes an chills out on the couch during dinner. Oh course it helps we eat dinner right about her evening nap time. I'm not sure how she is about food that isn't at the table. But I expect it would be similar to Ivan, she is a dalmatian afterall.

Skittles is being trained to ignore food, so she doesn't really pay much attention.

Demon chooses to hang out in his crate when we eat, he was trained to do this.

Nox will sometimes try to sneak his head in a bowl but we're working on that.

Then there is Erebus, my English Bulldog. Food is his favorite thing in the WHOLE world. He HAS to be crated or he will dive into your food before you have a chance to say no or grab him. I have not figured out how to change his behavior quite yet, he is very stubborn.

For those of you who have dogs with horrifying table manners, what do you do about it when you have company or roommates? Would you be mad if someone retaliated when they tried to steal food?

I would probably punch a dog - or human - that took food off my fork or plate. It doesn't go over well. Chazzers who have seen people try this in person can verify. I can't imagine having a dog who was that bad around food.

Yes. But if my dogs were food thieves, they wouldn't be allowed to get in that situation. I lock them up when we have people over for dinner (which is really just family anyway lol) to eliminate the problem, even though my guys are not going to steal from someones plate.

Well I just opened a granola bar and Mia came over and licked it.

Pretty much they're horrible. Mia likes to stand on your shoulders and look at the food pitifully. Summer usually sits at your feet looking cute and hoping you pity her.

But mostly I just don't care about those kinds of manners so they're horrible beggars.

If we have company for dinner, Gusto goes on a leash and I put my foot on it so he stays next to me. Meg is left loose as she just sits and stares. If it was someone I knew was really uncomfortable with dogs, I'd close them up in my room.

I make a big effort to be sure that my dogs don't bother other people, even in my own home, but I can assure you that anyone who did punch either of my dogs would be out of my house very quickly.
