More or less curiosity here, but while I understand most of you would choose premium kibble or raw, I'm curious as to why you would choose which food.

Knowing that Giant breed dogs should not be on puppy food, what would you choose?

I've got a 6 month old Newf on Canidae ALS.

I feed him Canidae because I'm not comfortable feeding raw (he already has so many problems, and it would be very easy for me to screw things up further) and it is affordable while still a very high quality food.

I'm not yet getting another dog, but in the future I plan to get another Newf from an actual good breeder, and while I'm sure I'll hear their recommendations, I'd like to hear yours too.

:D

I would feed Eagle Pack Holistic Select Large Breed Puppy formula personally. I would choose this food because of all the large breed puppy research and feeding studies the company has done. My second choice would be Canidae ALS.

This website is worth checking out (it applies to all breeds, not just danes) www.greatdanelady.com

Large and Giant breed puppies should not be fed Large breed puppy food after about 16 weeks or so. The risk is run that they grow too quickly and their bones develop too quickly. The bones and joint plates should develop slowly as to avoid problems in the adult stage.

I thought that was why they were fed Large Breed Puppy and not regular puppy, to avoid the overgrowth??

I would probably feed a high quality ALS formula.

Not after the age of 16-18 weeks, after that the biggest growth sprut begins. And there's something about the amounts of proteins in combination with the amounts of calcium that it's not recommended. I thought the same thing, to feed them this for a year, for a while until all three of my breeders said, no, no, no, get them off puppy food all together and especially large breed formula.

I think it depends on the large breed puppy formula being fed. Eagle Pack does specific research on their large breed foods to prevent growth problems in giant puppies. It's about the only LG breed puppy food I would trust.

Protein really isn't as big as a factor as calories are. If you look at the Eagle Pack Large breed puppy formula, it actually has less protein, fat and calories that their large breed adult which would make it a safer option.

Eagle Pack's Large/Giant Breed Puppy is the food I am planning to feed my dane puppy. The website mentioned (greatdanelady) has a lot of good info for giant breed puppies. If I recall correctly, Eagle Pack worked with her to formulate the food.

I have had no luck with Eagle, but my present dane is fickle anyhow, as was my last dane. BUT, the popular consensus amongst other dane owners on my message board is that many did not have success with it either.(Not saying this is the entire dane owning population, just a percentage...but something that struck me as odd that so many dane people had trouble with it)

The best luck I've had thus far with Hannah has been on Chicken Soup adult formula.

I really wanted to feed raw, but it did not work for her. My next choice, a grain free diet, had a protein/calorie level I was not entirely comfy with for a growing giant breed.

I'd suggest asking some other newfy breeders what they feed. Look at their dogs. See if you like the results.

All breeds are different, heck, all dogs are different, so what works for one person's dog may not work for yours.

I do admire all the research that has gone into Eagle and the fact that they have studied and created a giant breed puppy formula that meets the nutritional criteria of a growing giant. It just hasn't worked for my danes.

Well I have been feeding the Solid Gold Wolfcub to Holly. She gets an upset tummy to lots of foods and this one seems to work with her. Even if over fed she doesn't get sick anymore with it. Lots of people will say that they had not so good results on it but I have had good results with Holly and hopefully she will be able to stay on this formula.

We have tried the Eagle Pack large breed puppy formula for her and that made her sick, we've tried Innova which also made her sick, we've tried Canidae chicken meal and rice which was ok but not the greatest for her (although she loved it and it usually makes my dogs look great), and then the Natural Balance venison and rice which did ok for a little bit.

The Solid Gold has done the best for her by far though and we plan on keeping her on it.

Pics of Grim

Thanks for the responses.

I started him out on Nutro LB Puppy, then went to Adult, then to Royal Canine, and now we're on Canidae mixed with pumpkin, and some meat.
