If you had purchased a puppy from a breeder in another state and had even paid for the shipping MONTHS in advance and just as the puppy was becoming old enough to ship they fell off the face of the earth?

As in, the breeder DISAPPEARED? I wouldn't even know what to do. I guess paying the deposit doesn't necessarily mean there's already a contract, and even so you would still have to find them to sue them. But if you've already paid in full there is likely a signed contract.

I suppose I'd go through a bunch of dog contacts, ask show people, other breeders, etc, about whether or not they've seen heads nor tails of them.

If I actually had a contract or other concrete evidence of the terms of purchase, AND if I'd been trying to contact them and they were not responding... I'd send them a certified letter advising them that since they haven't been responding to my attempts to contact them about the puppy they'd be hearing from my attorney next unless I heard from them by X date to make arrangements for shipping.

If I didn't have a contract, or if I hadn't made much of an attempt to contact them yet, I'd continue to try contacting them as well as try to figure out through the grapevine what was up with them.

I would see if I could stop/cancel payment, and tell the breeder that and see if that would open communication back up.

If that wasn't possible, and the state wasn't too far of a trip, I would go out there and try to find them. To talk to them.

Barring the above, I would check out small claims court.

Thanks for the advice. I will pass it along. I was shown the contract that my friend signed and the breeder also signed it, and I think he paid for everything through paypal, although I'm not entirely sure on that one.

If he paid through paypal, that is like, the best case scenario. Paypal is set up so you do not get screwed when purchasing something

I research pretty extensively so I would wonder A) Did something happen to the breeder and B) would never pay for shipping or a puppy in advance beyond a deposit.

Assuming I knew the puppy I was getting, signed a contract, and paid and never received the dog and the breeder was just blowing me off. I'd go to small claims court where I'd be after the amount for breach of contract (a good contract goes both ways) and the amount of my puppy.
