When I was about 8 years old, I befriended a Pekingese who lived nearby in the apartment complex that we lived in when we moved to a new area. Hopke' was my best friend and his family had a growing family of two babies, who moved away after their second baby was born. I missed the company of Hopke' so much, but as I grew up, other breeds caught my eye, also. I will never stop missing my little friend, "my peke" Hopke'.

Hopke's mother let me take care of him when they went on vacation and I formed a lifelong love for dogs of all kinds, after that!!

Rough collies... I sometimes think I'd still like one, but I really like the sheltie personality.

I wanted an afghan, a borzoi or an irish wolfhound. I was fine with any of the three. I had this concept that I couldn't have an afghan for some reason. They just seemed so rare or not real. Now I feed a house full of them and I know they are very real.

As an adult I own the breeds I grew up with! I will always own Dobermans. I will someday branch out to own another breed or maybe a mixed breed.

I wanted a black Lab. My cousins had a huge one, Satan, one of the biggest I have ever seen, even today. He was a great dog who lived to 14, and back in the late 60's, that was old for a 130+ pound monster.

I never got a black Lab, I had a yellow one, Joe from 1977 until we had to put him down due to heart failure, in 1989. He lived a decently long life, considering the health problems he had his entire laugh. I still want one, but to be honest, my mutts have been so much healthier than my purebreds, I'll probably stick with those from now on.

Me, too. But in my case it was because I saw "The Doberman Gang" on late night TV. I was totaly in awe of how smart they were. I'd still like to have a Dobe some day, but my husband isn't so sure about that idea.

You know, my (now) ex didn't like Dobes at ALL. When we were originally talking about a dog he said ABSOLUTELY NOT about one. After we had had Django for a while we started talking about getting him a sister. I happened to walk into the local shelter after hanging out with Sizzle, Ilsa and Ronin and there was a tiny, dirty, skinny sickly looking little Dobergirl. Well, long story short, he fell in love with her and it was hard for him to let her leave when he and I split. Dobes get under you skin. In a good way.

Yeah, I won't say no to a collie now, but they're not on the top of my list. I've found the other breeds in the collie family to strike my fancy more these days. I also did always want a GSD after Shack passed away. Haven't grown out of that one. As soon as I stop renting, I'll start researching a good GSD breeder so I can finally get my shepherd.

I wanted a Smooth Fox Terrier, based entirely on the description in the Bruce Fogle "Encyclopedia Of Dogs"....

(What?!! :p I was EIGHT. I didn't know any better! The only dogs I knew were labs, shelties, and toy poodles!)

My next cohice was a sheltie and that was the closest my family CAME to letting me get a dog. Glad now I didn't get one, but I do still like them.

I would be definitely open to a doberman. We also took one from our trainer over the winter that she was trying to rehome after her husband got laid off, but decided that financially it was not the right time. DH *loves* them--they are definitely on our "own some day" list.

I wanted a Bush Dog because I saw it in one of my mom's dog breed books (circa 1945) and it looked cool. I was 4 yrs old, and didn't really think there was any problem with it being a non-domesticated dog. :)

AmStaff. I saw one in a breed book and thought "I LOVE THEM. I'll have one one day."

When my parents allowed us to have dogs, we brought home Rottweilers mixes.

Obviously, now it's all about the Dobermans:D
