What is your timeline like for nextdog?

I'm loving all of the activity on Chaz lately!!

I've been thinking about this for a while now, and for me it certainly depends a lot on what our current dogs can make happen. I'm all set on cow dogs for a good bit (definitely until I'm done with school!) and probably wouldn't add another until Tulsa is quite a bit older (around 7 or so) and Rider is gone. Though, if I've got super wild cattle and neither of them can help me out, I may have to get a stronger working dog sooner rather than later.

We are definitely at our max on dogs. I think 3 was ideal, honestly, especially adding a rather large dog. I'm hoping Iggy will hunt for another 3 seasons, at that point I don't know if we will add another to take over for him right away and have him mentor a puppy or if we will wait until our numbers go down a bit.

So what about you?

In summer of 2017, if everything goes as planned and I am out of nursing school, we will be taking a vacation to Australia and bringing back a koolie puppy

I love it too! I'm sucking at contributing to the thread creation. I need to get on it.

We probably won't add another until we buy a house, which is 1-2 years away. Hugo doesn't take up a ton of space, but his STUFF does. And if two dogs were running around wrestling, they would be knocking junk over. Plus I want a backyard for them to play in.

If I was being ultra responsible, I'd say 3 years so that the dogs wouldn't be too close in age and I wouldn't have them becoming seniors and passing really close together. Who knows if I'll make it that far, lol.

I think three would be our future max, probably 2 permanent dogs and a foster.

I don't really have one. I'm not sure I want another dog for a very long time.. with my 2 dogs, my brother's dog visiting sometimes and with my new job I'm good for now.

Ideally, never. I have a 2 dog limit, and I'd like both of mine to live forever.

Realistically, 5 years? I'd like to think Meg has at least that long. She's 100% sound and healthy at about 11. I don't think I'd intentionally go long with just one dog. If Meg were to go first, Gusto in particular I think would have a hard time as an only dog. Meg would probably be thrilled to be an only dog again, and I'm not sure I'd make her raise another puppy. But I also don't know that I'd be incredibly content with just one senior dog.

Assuming I'm remotely in a mental position to get a puppy if something happens to either of them. I thought I'd handle Tristan's death fairly well, and it really wrecked me for about six months. If something ever happens to Meg, I'll probably be in a padded room for the better part of a year.

But once one is gone, and I have returned to the world, I would put out word to a couple of friends that I was looking for a border collie puppy, and wait to see what sort of litters came up and see if any of them seemed right.

In all honesty, probably next year. It'd be better to wait until 2017, but waiting until next year is going to be a push as it is.

Really, any time. I have had a few opportunities and have passed them up, but I've been casually looking around for many months. Breeders, rescues... A few different breeds. I'm not dead set on adding a third, but if the right dog comes along at the right time, and the stars align... Then I'll add a third whenever. I've had a lot of boarding clients and training that has kept me busy lately and curbed the urge... But it's still there.

About 5.5 weeks from now

After that...well, depends on how little miss whippet develops. I could definitely see myself adding another dog a year and a half to two years from now, as inadvisable as that might be. I'd like to add a Flatcoat at some point to have something different and more biddable, and in all probability I will wind up with a herd of whippets in addition - I foresee this breed being perfect for me. Gotta get started on Crazy Dog Lady status sometime...

Uh... preferably before Roxie gets too old and grouchy. Perhaps in the next year or two, but I'm not actively looking aside from spying greyhound rescues every so often.

But first I need to get moved out, get Roxie comfy with the new place, and then start doing some serious searching. And I'm not even looking at places to live yet, so it's definately not gonna happen any day soon.

Planning for this time next year. Though Ryker is just maturing and being an asshat towards Gypsy so we'll see where we go with that and whether or not I feel comfortable adding another dog.

I could realistically add a dog whenever. And it's hard not to. I really want to wait and maybe start talking to breeders next fall.

I go back and forth on if I want to REALLY add another. I would like 2 dogs to really work. I feel like I do better if I can focus on two dogs instead of just one because I think it mellows me out and I am not as apt to wear out the poor one dog that has to do everything.

But 4 dogs is a lot. And I feel like Hank has a lot of potential so I don't want to shortchange him. So the plan is to get him trialling then re-evaluate and go from there. Hank would like a dog his speed to play with and Mia and Summer hardly count because they're so tiny and easy. Or at least that's my reasoning.

I have no idea. I don't even know if nextdog will be a breeder, rescue, or rehome dog. It will probably be a Labrador though....unless it's not--lol

Definitely not before I move out, which probably won't happen for a couple of years. Ideally I would like to add another puppy once Wilson is five and Sam is 10, but I don't know.

Is it a great time to add a puppy? Absolutely not. But I love the litter, Liz has confirmed hemangiosarcoma, and Keena is probably 10 or 11 (SPCA special, no idea). Rage is 8 but would like someone to pal around with I'm sure, I don't think she'll take well to being without Liz. Bruce essentially lives on my couch like a cat.
