*throws Merlin in the pile of dogs up for grabs and runs away*

:rofl1: HAHAHA HES YOURS NOW!

one of those nights guys lol
MINE!! :rofl1:

What would you say your ideal pack (or dog, if you just want one) is like? How many?

My ideal dog is Journey. Confident, happy, playful, eager to learn, brilliant, friendly and easy to live with. That is what I will try to find in all of my future dogs. My ideal pack to live with would be two dogs. I will probably never have my ideal two, because somehow I always end up with a third haha. But three is good too as long as one is low maintenance. I just want two dogs that mesh well together and are able to entertain/play with eachother well, and one that mostly just hangs out and is older and wiser and stays out of trouble. And some days I kind of wish I could make myself be a one person dog so that I could devote all of my time and attention to just one, but I really do love having two and like three as well most of the time.

What types? Herding breed types. Eager to learn, quick to learn, plenty of energy but knows when to relax, no more than 45lbs. I think I want mainly Aussies in the future. Two Aussies and Dance. Or an Aussie, a Koolie and Dance. And once Dance is gone I'm not sure what that third dog would be if I end up getting a third. Perhaps another Toller or perhaps something else or perhaps yet another Aussie haha. But I definitely want two herding dogs at least.

Ideally I'd also have only girls forever. But I have a feeling Journey will be happier with a boy in a handful of years when I want another dog. She's super friendly but can be a bit bitchy with other girls sometimes. We'll see. Might just be dependent on individual personality too.

What roles do you want them to play? Active pet and hiking buddy and good couch cuddler mainly haha. I love having a sport dog too, but I don't know if I'd want to have (be able to afford to have) multiple sport dogs. Being an enjoyable companion is my first goal as I have to live with the dog day in and day out, and everything else is just fun.

Are you at your ideal now, and if not, why? Nope. I currently live with four. Of the four, two are of a breed that I really don't mesh with very well and I love them very much, but they frustrate me (and I frustrate them too I am sure). Said two are also much larger than I prefer if I am going to have multiple dogs. And even though I have four dogs, their play styles aren't matched and I wish they were. Journey is super rough and physical (and loud), Dance is quiet and very non-physical, Ripley is rough and spinny and twice the size of the two hairy dogs, and Keira either doesn't play or just flails around on her back and confuses the other dogs haha. I really, really wish I had a dog that was well matched to Journey. She and Ripley play all the time, but I worry about the size difference with the way they play.

With that said, if I am only counting Dance and Journey as my dogs (because they are, and they are the ones that I will be taking when I leave home), they're pretty close to ideal except that they aren't great playmates. But otherwise they go together well. They're complete opposites and opposites attract! I do enjoy the two of them together very much.

Who knows if I'll ever have my ideal. Maybe someday when I live on my own and choose the types of dogs I live with I'll have a better chance at that. :)

I think that's one of those area-specific things. Here every height class, even at the little trials, is at least 20 dogs so you can run 2-3/height and still have 10 dogs between. Running Mira and Kim is no biggie as long as I warm them both up well before the class starts and put their coats on so I can do an abbreviated warmup before each actual run.

Whereas if you have dogs in different height (or difficulty) classes, it makes for REALLY long days. When I was running Mira and Webster (24", 16") They were always at least 7 hour days, not counting drive time, since both classes are usually 30+ dogs and the 20" class is in between with 40+ dogs (for two ring/judge trials, the class sizes are more like 60, 90, 60). When I ran an 8" dog a few times for a friend, they were more like 10 hour days (2 ring/judge trial). Which is just a lot when you're asking your dogs to hang out in a crate for that long every day and only actually run for less than two minutes (plus warmups and such).

But yeah when I lived in a lower trial numbers area, running two dogs in a height class was really hard since the class sizes were only day 2-10 dogs. Fortunately that was pre-Mira so I never had to do it, but I held dogs for other people fairly often as they tried to deal with the problem!
Our largest class has been 5 dogs. Last trial it was just me in performance 8".

Not enough time between dogs.

It is hard on my dogs to have full days. Sadly all our trials have been two full days so far because I've only entered club trials and ended up working most of them. I have decided that next trial I'm going to try to make it a half day or less for them and see how that helps. Summer doesn't settle in her crate at all and after two days of barking nonstop, she's worn out.

Oh goodie, one for me for when I visit. Very thoughtful. HIKE!
I was just thinking the other one would be for the emergency crews to find me and rescue me when I get lost in the middle of Alaska and have to wrestle grizzly bears with my bare hands.

The damned huskies would,of course, be rooting for the bear.

I go through spurts of this, where I think about how easy my life would be without dogs. Especially at 6am in negative temperatures when I'm trudging through the snow cursing at the dogs because they are taking too long to poop :p And I think about how I wouldn't ever have to worry about how many hours I'm away from home, the stress of maintenance people coming into the apartment would be obsolete, the MONEY that I would save.

And then I think about how boring that would be. Also, dogs are my social life.
Lol, this. I have these thoughts cross my mind every now and then. But then I remember how like 80% of my social life involves dogs. :rofl1:

Yuup, this is me too. Every once in a while I will get a fleeting wish to not have any animals and have a ton of money...until I realize without dogs, I would have nothing to spend money ON.

I would be an effing millionaire. I just know it. *shakes fist*
Seriously. I get scared when I think about how much I spend on them. So I usually just stop thinking about it :p

Very true! I honestly have no idea what I would even DO without dogs. My life would be so boring.

I just want a Rowan forever. He can be such a pain but he really is perfect for me, even in the ways he's not perfect... I wouldn't change him for anything.

I have my ideal pack right now, for my current situation. The boys really balance each other out. I could be happy with just a Rowan, but not just a Riff. I need that stability and focus from at least one dog!

In the future I think I'd like one sporter (Brittany, some sort of spaniel, maybe the right retriever), one herder (English Shepherd, Koolie, maybe a corgi someday) and one wild card. I loved the sporter/herder combo with Rowan and my friend's cattle dog mix Kaylee when we lived together.

It might not work out that way though... my boyfriend hates shedding so it's very likely that a poodle will be the next dog, and maybe poodles from there on out. We'll see. I love poodles and am excited to have one (or more) again but I like variety too, and there are tons of shedding breeds that I want to have. It's very dependent on when/if we move in together, and also if I can convince him that dog hair isn't that bad, look at how amazing this breed is :p

I probably have the "least" idea pack, but I dig it. Even in all of the dysfunction. Two seniors, two middle agers, two younger adults. Two want to kill each other. Shambles is Shambles. I have my hounds, my saggy old dog, and my workers. I'm happy.

My ideal pack is about 5 Cardigans (blacks and blues), 1 Pembroke, 1 black sable male GSD (DDR pls), & 1 Bernese Mountain Dog. The Corgis for overall comic relief and showing, the GSD for PP/obedience/sport, and the BMD for cuddling/nannying/pulling my son in a wagon. :) I would also like a Dobie, a Malamute, Huskies or mixes thereof, a Papillon and an Amstaff, but I know my limits kind of.

My ideal breed is a laika.. Shes a mix of 3. Breeds. Only no 2 of the for sure breeds. She can be a major jerkface but shes ideal. Shes got the spunk and bitchiness and shes completley velcro which gets annoying. But idealy i would like 2 dogs at all times. Maybe 3 but always a laika :)

I'm not sure what my ideal pack is - I really like having three but that's with four people around to help take care of them. I think for myself I'd want no more than two or three at a time, and definitely no more than two active/sport dogs. If all goes well we will have a pack of four next year - so we'll see how that goes :D - but the following year I will hopefully have an apartment and be able to take Cricket with me.

I think I'll always have a LHW or two, they really are the perfect dogs for me, but there are several other breeds (some herders and other sighthounds) that I'd like to own as well. I can see myself with the occasional low-maintenance older rescue somewhere down the road, too.

What would you say your ideal pack (or dog, if you just want one) is like? How many?
My ideals dogs have a great off switch, but can be fairly active. They can be weekend warriors. They are aloof with strangers and alert bark when there are strangers coming to the house. They are one person type dogs and are really bonded to me. They enjoy training and play. No serious reactivity or dog-aggression. 2-3 dogs.

What types?
I really like the Asian Spitz breeds, but I am fond of other breeds. I've recently discovered English Shepherds and they seem pretty great. Maybe I'll have a Chow Chow or two and an English Shepherd.

What roles do you want them to play?
Friend, partner. Go with me to Farmers Markets. Do some non-competitive activities with.
I have been seriously considering training next dog to help with my disability. I'm trying to train Cameron a few things, but there are some tasks that I know she won't be able to pull off. I'm thinking having a task-trained pet to help me at home would be beneficial, plus it would allow me to live alone. I don't really have the skills to train everything I want, so I would need to work with a trainer. SO, in an ideal world one of my dogs would know a few tasks to help me out some. (If anyone wants to look over the task list I've come up with and tell me which ones seem doable I would appreciate that! There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here!)

Are you at your ideal now, and if not, why?
No. For one thing, Cameron and Duncan don't get along as well as I'd like. I'd want dogs a little more harmonious.

Just Bandit for now till I am in a better place to add another. It always seems I am saying in 1-2 years but the end really is in sight. Can't wait. It will be a long anticipated addition.

There is such a huge part of me that wants Merlin to have a permanent playmate.

But there is so much about having a single dog that I would miss so very much :(
UGH and renting with two dogs in the city. Lord.

It's just beyond not an option for a long long while.

Which in turn makes me sad because Merlin would love it SOOOOOO much. I feel like he has so many friends at work and parties with other dogs a lot but I wonder if he is missing out/feels lonely at home in the late afternoons/quiet evenings with no other dog to hang out with.

He seems happy, but WHAT IF HE IS SECRETLY LONELY AND DEPRESSED ABOUT BEING AN ONLY CHILD
Maybe I'm being selfish.

Yes I am one of those worry wart dog owners lol

Preeettty sure dogs don't think like that. At least in my world they don't. They take each moment as it comes, they don't spend time resenting how things are or how they could be. They are excited when things are exciting, they are calm when things are calm. I would love to be a dog.

Pretty much why I'm getting a dog friendly cat. Gwen misses her cat buddy. I can't handle two dogs right now.

I'm not sure I'll be able to handle another dog with Gwen for a while. The fosters have been a bit overwhelming. I don't know how you all manage multiples. Maybe a small dog in the future. Like Fran said, renting with one dog is hard enough.

YAY!!

If I had more room, or lived closer to home, I would own 2 or 3 more english shepherds and maybe a LHW or SWH

But, where we are right now, Hudson is my ideal pack.
Yay is right!! It's been awhile in the making but I'm so hoping things work out now *knocks on wood*

We have very similar tastes - I love both those breeds, too! :D
