Some dogs can get away with wider widths on collars if the material is thinner.
I typically don't put wider than 1.5" leather collars on Ophie and that's with it tapered to 1" at the buckle. But she can wear 1.5", untapered fabric collars because they're thinner (usually) than the leather ones I put on her. I think large-giant breed dogs with long, slender necks could pull of wide collars without issue. My dogs may have longer necks, but they don't have the tall body to go with it, so wide collars (2"), I don't think look right on them.
Rory's collar might look more ridiculous up against your chis' necks because it's thick(er) leather.
Also, tapering at the buckle does WONDERS for the appearance of the width of a collar.
Chloe's collar is 3/4" and tapered to 1/2" and it looks silly even on Rylie and Emma. It's not thick like Rory's collars are. Even with his thicker collars against their necks, I still get an idea as to how 1" would look on them.
Like I said, Chloe (7.5lbs) can barely pull off the 3/4" collar even with it being tapered to a thinner width. I couldn't imagine going any bigger on it. It even took a couple of hours of me looking at it on her neck to get used to the width.
I'm very interested in seeing how Popcorn looks in a wider collar. Some dogs can pull them off, but mine definitely couldn't.
Kat is obviously not a chi, but she is just over 10 pounds and 11 inches (so still pretty small) This is 1.25 on her, single thickness. Lol she is wet and the tab isn't away, so its not a pretty pic, but it shows how much neck there still is even on a thicker collar. Its wider than Rory's!!
and a group shot
Smudge's is 1.5 wide single thickness. So I don't really think its the size of the dog, but the length of the neck. The longer/elegant the neck the better a wide collar looks. The 1.25 looks better on Kat than Dekka because of this. Perhaps popcorn has a very elegant neck? Can't wait for pics too.
oh its good to go with what you like. And you don't walk them on them any way right? I like the wide ones esp when we go to terrier trials, even the most well behaved obedience trained JRT will pull on their leash like crazy in excitement. The wider ones are safer on their necks.
My snowy (9.2lb) and crystal (9.4lb) wear 3/4" wide and less.
Currently, they are wearing a 3/4" wide collar.
Today, they got groomed. The collar is a bit loose on snowy today after the shave - needed to be a bit tighter (did not do it before snapping the picture) , but it is now. i see a 3/4" perfect on mine. Not too wide and not too narrow on mine
Luke could easily pull off a 2" wide collar, but I'd prefer to taper it at the buckle.
I have both of mine in 1.25" collars now that are tapered to 1":
Both of those collars are made out of 12-14 oz. english bridle leather.
Luke can typically pull off wider collars, but since that leather is so thick, I wouldn't put a collar made out of that leather any wider than 1.25" on him.
Thickness of materials can make a HUGE difference in how width looks on a dog.
If you want 1/2" collars, but if you think that they may look too wide still on your dogs, ask if you can have it tapered down to 3/8" at the buckle.
Harleigh has collars that are from 3/4" to 2" and while she looks fine in all of those my favorite width on her is 1-1.5". She is around 25.5-26" tall and weighs around 65 pounds - this is her in a 3/4" collar, lol.
