Hi all. I like many of you work full time, and I'm gone 10 hours a day from the house. I don't want to keep my terrier in a crate for that long without taking him out so I was thinking maybe puppy proof the bathroom and leave him in there? It's plenty of space for him to run around since he's only 9lbs. Only concern is, being in a smaller room like a bathroom, would it get too stuffy for him? What do you all think? This is the best option I have besides paying 30 bux a day for a dog sitter.

by the way, this is only a temporary thing because I still live with my parents and they won't let him stay anywhere else in the house. I will be getting an apt soon but then the trouble will be keeping him quiet and not bothering the neighbors while i'm gone!

Just a note about the bathroom. I read somewhere that a dog was left in the bathroom and when the owner got home, the dog chewed through the water line supply to the toilet and the house was flooded. I never thought about this. I think maybe the kitchen might be a good idea. How old is your dog?

unfortunetly, its an hour drive to and from work for me so it makes 10 hours and i can't bring the fellow with me to work so I dont really have a choice. Dog day care will cost a fortune in the long run, i dont know anyone who is consistently home to take care. He gets plenty of attention when i get home though as i include him in everything i do. And freddie is two years old by the way. WEll, like i said, this may be for anohter month or so till i get a place of my own and move closer to work, then i may be able to come home once during the day but that would be impossible since now by the time i get home, my lunch break would be over already. if anyone has any bright ideas, please let me know. thanks.

What about hiring a dog walker to take him for a walk at lunchtime?

Maybe it will cost you...but you're responsible for another life now.

I've never used one, but I'm sure you could find somebody in the phone book, or advertising at the local pet store. I'm sure anybody decent would be able to give you a few references to check out.

If you live with your parents, why can't they take him out ????? I agree 10 hours IS too long to be locked in. Any area in the garage you could put a run with door to outside ??

Ten hours IS a long time, but they are adaptable little creatures as long as you're willing to meet them part of the way. The bathroom is probably the second best idea, Bubbatd's being the best.

You really will have to puppy proof whatever area he's in though. Terriers are bright and extremely resourceful when it comes to getting into mischief! Lots of interesting toys, particularly the ones that make him think, like puzzle balls, will help. And be prepared to keep him with you the rest of the time. It would be very good for him, too, if when you go out to places (other than work) where it's possible, to take him with you. It will give him socialization skills and help to keep him from getting stir crazy as well as giving the two of you more time together. And I'll just bet he's a great way to meet dates, lol!

My husband's sister uses one, and if you do use one, just make sure they are bonded. That way you know they are legit and if anything happens they can be held accountable and liable. Just ask them if they are bonded when you call one, and make them show you proof.

I have a Jack Russell. Someone has to be home to play with and exercise it and train it or you are going to have a dog from hell before too long. If you're squeamish about letting a stranger in the house, just imagine all your furniture in tatters and shreds and all your shoes chewed because that is exactly what will happen.

Thanks for all the replies, my parents can't take him out because they are at work, they are not THAT old, they still work full time, so basically their is no one at home during the day. Well, i will look into some dog walking services, since no one seems to mind letting a stranger into their house, maybe i'm thinking too hard about it but then again, it's not my house. Well, tommorow will be the first time i try keeping Freddie in the bathroom while i'm gone, i went and bought some kongs and filled them with peanut butter and brought some other goodies for him to hopefully keep him busy. The only other option that seems to work for now would be to keep him crated 10 hours and i know ppl here will jump all over me for bringing that idea up, and keeping him in the garage where it will get prolly around 90 degrees or so in the day time being that it is Houston. Well, i'll let ya know how it goes tommorow, if i still have a bathroom .

If you go like to run errands at the mall or return things at best buy, what do you do with the dog if it's too hot to keep him in the car?? I tried to be sneaky and enter the mall with him inside of my backpack, i gave head space to just stick his head out but it wasn't like i had him on leash while i was in there. I got caught and was told to take the dog back outside.

You can't take him with you when you're going places like that since it is too hot in the car, plus you might not have car seats - or wiring - left when you got back! When you go to visit friends and to places that do allow dogs take advantage though. I even try to take at least one of mine with me whenever I'm going to someplace that allows dogs. I figure if someone can have their lap dog inside a place I can take mine too! I just make sure I'm not going anywhere that might sustain expensive tail damage, lol.

Bonding, in this context, is a professional insurance that covers liability should something untoward happen when the bonded person is present or through their negligence (i.e. not re-locking the door).

LMAO Renee on the "tail damage" My brother's dog could knock you over if you were'nt seeing it coming.

Back to topic, Terriers are VERY demanding and get into EVERYTHING. I'm always finding something Nora's gotten into everyday. My kids and I have lost .. hmm ... let me see, pens and pencils, nail polish, hair ties, play-do, rolls upon rolls of toilet paper, my daughter's egsyma (sp. check) cream (yep, you heard me, tube that cost 50.00 with the ins. coverage) all at the hands or paws of Nora and many more, she just keeps ticking :) OH the latest is my oldest daughter (16) just did a red hair rinse ( ) and Nora decided to go and investigate the trash yesterday. Well, her left side of her face or nose is now RED streaked! OMG I really have to fix my picture viewer on my puter to show you pictures.....

Freddie, does your bathroom have windows? If you were going to leave the dog in the bathroom, I would make sure that there is some kind of ventilation. We have two dogs and I would be inclined to suggest another dog to keep eachother company however I know that is not an option. So, if you must keep the dog in the bathroom then so be it. Just make sure there is ventilation and you give your dog extra extra extra attention and kisses when your home. Can you purchase a kiddie gate to block off the kitchen or another room? I've even used an old door held up with a chair to blockade the dogs in the kitchen. (Although Nora found a way to jump onto the chair and get over the board  ) Terriers you know, hehehe With her paws she would climb the board, but I taught her not to.

Good luck to you! You just have to use your best judgement I think.

My bathroom doen't have windows but that's why i got a pet gate so i can leave the door open and just block him with that. Suprisingly, he did not pee or poop today when left in the bathroom!
