I am putting this here for the time being, because I think it will get more attention here. I am also making a new thread because the one in the health section is pretty much riddled with spam. :) And I know there are new members that do different things.

Soo, that begs the question.. what is in your first-aid kit for your dogs? I am updating ours and am finding it lacking.

Please share! :)

I have bandages, peroxide spray, tweezers, pointy scissors, Keflex, and Crazy glue. Also a muzzle, a soft denim one. Very compact.

I don't have a dog specific first aid kit, but our human one is practically a medic bag. I've got BVM's and airways and blood pressure cuffs, and stethoscopes, and most of the time we have an O2 tank and kit kicking around... (Matt runs a first aid training company and is a paramedic, it's his job AND his hobby, hence the overflowing first aid BINS we have). I should get some dog specific things though, a muzzle and vet wrap at minimum.

My first aid kit no longer exists :(
What I used to have in it:
tweezers, quick stop, vet wrap, gauze - rolls and pads, thermometer, alcohol wipes, vaseline, peroxide, metronidazole, eye wash, ice pack, dremel, scissors, stethoscope.

What happened to your kit, CP? :
Stuff got used, lost, moved. I haven't had a chance to restock it.

I still have a thermometer, stethoscope, peroxide and metronidazole. Oh. Also benadryl is part of the kit and I do have that currently.

we have a stethoscope.. I should put together an actual dog first aid kit, we have tons of human ones.

Also, another good thing to have in it (that I didn't see mentioned) is that New Skin stuff.

Keflex is Cephalexin. It is an excellent broad spectrum antibiotic that is the treatment of choice of animal bite wounds. I have the bottle labeled with the correct loading dosages for both dogs. That way if they need it, I can get it in them right away, before they get bacteria floating around inside of them. You can but it without a prescription as a fish medication (LOL) called fish-flex. I just replace the bottle when it expires.

Crazy glue is used to close gaping wounds before transport. It works well on people too. I have had to use both several times ( the glue on other peoples dogs, thank goodness.)

Someone mentioned metronidazole (brand name Flagyl), which is used to treat giardia and other atypical infections. I wonder what you would use it for emergently.

Don't actually have a kit, but this is what we've got in our house to treat bites and other wounds:

peroxide
rubbing alcohol
betadine
witch hazel
corn starch(broken nails, trimmed too far)
vaseline
bag balm(hot spots, bites)

And I would like to add a refreezable ice pack to that list for when cocoa has seizures to bring her out of them more quickly by placing them on her back. The only other time we use these things are for making homemade ear cleaner solution, or when Misha attacks someone and leaves bite wounds on them. And for those, we mostly clean it up, rinse/flush it out if it is deep, and then routinely apply peroxide and bedatine.

It can also be used for diarhhea. That is what my vet always perscribes for diarrhea. works like a charm.

Flagyl is often commonly given to dogs with tummy troubles.
I need to get a first-aid kit now with this lot.

Question... what do people use as a bag?

It's often prescribed for diarrhea in general. I also buy the fish version of metronidazole. I don't buy the other antibiotics because I don't know which to use and for what.

Mine is similar to this

http://www.dandbpetsupplies.co.uk/photos/tack bag.jpg

I bought it at a tack shop. Lots of bottle-size pockets for liquids so they don't spill ~ eye wash, peroxide. Small pockets for thermometer and scissors. The interior holds everything else. Including extra collars.

A thermometer
Petroleum Jelly
A roll of gauze wrap
A pill case with:
- Benadryl already cut into halves
- Traumeel (an anti-inflammatory)
Flea comb
Poop bags (it goes to agility trials with me, so I keep some in there)
Ear wipes
Styptic Pads

Mine is slightly lacking... I need to pick up a few more things to put into it, including a soft muzzle. Luckily we have never had to use any if it, outside of the Traumeel after a slightly rough agility day on bad surface, and the thermometer which I went out and bought one night to use at home.
I also have an eye dropper and hydrogen peroxide at home set off to the side with his heartworm and flea & tick meds, but I don't take it in the bag with me.
I have an extra brush that is always in my car along with two beach towels.

My bag is a little red bag I got at Target for $5.

After reading this I think a lot of the differences are in what we use these kits for. Mine is in the car because I mostly use it when the dogs go out hiking or to the dog park. Hence the keflex, but not metronidazole. I have that at home.

Mine is a car kit for emergencies only. We have lots more stuff at home.
