What breed did you want as a kid?

I dunno. I always thought I'd get another GSP or small terrier mutt as these are the two I grew up with (they died when I around 13/14).

When my parents were actively looking into a Staffordshire Bull Terrier I was like a bit confused to be honest. But then I looked into them a bit further and decided that YES they are an awesome breed! So I suppose I was extremely influenced by my parents at the time. No other breeds really caught my eye, although I remember my neighbour having the most beautiful ridgie/staffy cross which made me look into both breeds.

I did have a number of breed books as a kids, because I was really into dogs. But none of them sang out to me as dogs I'd actually own beside a small Australian Terrier type (mix of my childhood dog) or a GSP.

I remember thinking Bernese Mountain Dogs were the most beautiful dogs in the world though.

I always wanted a Beagle ---always. I would dream of them, carry stuffed toys around and fantasize about the day I would have one. I probably watched too much Shiloh.

I do not want a beagle now ;)

As a kid, I don't remember focusing on any breed, or really even a second dog. I had my Lilly beagle, and she was so perfect that I never needed another.

When I started working at the shelter, there still wasn't one breed, just a lot of individual dogs. Let's see, there was the collie mix, the Catahoula mix, the fiest mix, the springer mix, the Aussie mix, the chow mix...and probably a dozen others. I did get an idea of what I did not want, but there was no particular breed.

Then came Pandora, the ACD. That dog was my heart, even though she was never in my home. I wanted her so badly, and it crushed me when she had to be PTS. I was 100% sure that my own dog would be an ACD.

Now, I don't know if I would have one. I love them, but the DA is a huge concern for me, especially since I prefer males.

Never once would I have considered a whippet. Right up until Argon, I thought they were ugly and untrainable. I actually think my first words upon hearing I would be fostering him was "Oh, God, he's soooooooo ugly." Now I think they're wonderful.

As a side note, I think I said something similar about my first foster Persian, which leads me to believe I should just keep my mouth shut, considering they are now my heart breed and I will never have anything else. :rofl1:

I do still want a herder, and it was a pretty strong toss-up between a BC or anther LHW for my next pup.

I have exactly what I always wanted in Lily. I didn't realize it at the time when I was picking a dog, which is hilarious.

I was pretty obsessed with BC's too because of my Bud man, but now I realize how slim my chances are of finding like him. I have a MUCH better shot of finding a dog like him within the breed I plan to get next. ;)
I always wanted a red & white dog because of my aunt's dog Puppy. But again the odds of finding one like her... slim to none. Lily, Buddy, and Puppy all have/had very similar personality traits, so there is definitely a personality I like best that is consistent beyond breed!

One of my earliest memories is of being propped up against the big white shepherd type dog that Granny had. I guess I shouldn't be surprised we jive well.

Pretty much every sled dog I've ever met I've gotten along well with. And even with Scout's poor breeding I feel the same way about german shepherds. Which is funny because I don't like all Malinois. I really haven't cared for some of the show lines I have met, but part of that may be the owner's influence on those particular dogs too. I think that person may have done better with a more forgiving and less hair trigger breed...

I don't think Scout's personality (and nerves...) is the best fit for me, but I love the breed so much and mesh so well with the breed that it doesn't really matter. Next time hopefully I get a super stable girl whose confident enough to work.

I would love another sled dog, but I'd rather raise it from a puppy next time. That way any vices are my fault and no one elses. ;)
I love sibes, but I don't care for purebreds on the whole. Some of the hardcore lines like Seppala I do like, but overall meh give me some distance bred Alaskans.

I had my dream horse growing up too. Grey Arabian/cayuse cross. He was awesome. I want another Arab and I'm okay with a cross. The individual horse is what matters. I'm waiting until the absolute right one comes along and I want a young horse so its with me a really long time.

My "I want a..." phases are as follows:

JRT
Shiba Inu
Bernese Mountain Dog
Spinone Italiano
Newfoundland
Greyhound
Eurasier

The first two were the wants when I was a young child. I'm not sure where the JRT want came from, but I saw a shiba puppy at the pet store and became smitten. Incidentally, those first two are now two of my least favorite breeds. I could still see myself with one of the last five, though. Eurasiers are my current "want."

As a little kid I wanted huskies because I was obsessed with dog sledding and the book call of the wild.

As I got older (9 or so) I wanted Aussies. I still think they'd be a great fit for me.

I also thought in the future I might have JRTs, shelties, German pinschers, rotties.

Huskies! You know, because of Snow Dogs, and Balto. Plus, I loved how they looked "wolf-like". They certainly are a gorgeous breed,& that's what drew me to them. But, like any kid Now, I just admire them from afar,

When I was around 15(?), I wanted a Malinois, or APBT . I saw both breeds as "bad-
Oddly enough, when I was VERY young, I also wanted a Siamese cat.... but it had to be for my birthday, had to be delivered in a white box, and it had to have a Tiffany-blue bow around its neck.

I was very, very odd child.
ahaha. I love it.:rofl1:

As a kid, I dreamed of having a bull terrier. Then I moved on to huskies, then beagles, then basenjis, and then chocolate labs.

I still want a lab, but do not want a dog that sheds. So I'll probably stick with poodles.

A Collie. I used to write my Dad letters, beg, I converted "Everything I do, I do for you" to "Everthing I do, I'd do for a Collie" and got on the fireplace (it had a raised ledge) and tapped and sung it to my Dad....nada.

I really really wanted a husky when I was young, maybe 12 or so? I got into mushing with my family dog and was totally crazy about it for a while, and really felt like I needed to have a husky (plus I think I always had a thing for wolfy looking dogs).

I also went through a phase where I wanted a Karelian Bear Dog, again I just seemed to gravitate towards northern breeds.

Luckily by the time I actually picked out my first dog, I had realized they weren't the best fit for me. I probably got Jasper mostly because of Lassie and also the "Lad, a dog" books by Albert Payson Terhune, which I loved. Could have been worse, that's for sure!

Once I found out about wolfdogs, that was it, but I held out for years and years before eventually getting Yarrow.

OMG hahaha.

My mom told me I ALMOST got another dog as a kid when I wrote a letter to Santa asking for a puppy, or if he couldn't bring me a puppy, could he please bring my dog Happy back.
ALMOST. Apparently it got my dad right in the feels.
But nope.

Ohhh yeah, I was interested in Irish Setters too because of Big Red. Now I don't think they are as magnificent as I thought they were :p.

I really wanted a husky and a papillon, but neither would do well in my home. My husband and I fostered a few huskies and actually got Kosmo thinking he was a husky mix but thankfully not. Paps arent for me and Huskys just dont suite my FL needs.
