I wanted any dog when I was a kid; we didn't get a dog til I was 10, and before that, I was stuck to any dog when we visited people with dogs. My first dog was a black Lab. I wanted a "smart" dog, so I was into border collies. I wanted a rough collie because I was obsessed with Lassie. Also loved JRTs. I solved my own fascination with BCs and JRTs when I researched them and found they needed lots of stimulation to keep them from being destructive. I continued to want a collie until I became a groomer and found the vast majority of the ones I met were... umm... lacking in the personality department.

I used to think pit bulls were "mean." I don't actually remember thinking that, but I found some "books" I'd written in elementary school with a pit bull as the bad guy. It was the 80s... and I imagine I probably asked someone what a "mean dog" was.

At some point when I was a kid, I met an Akita at a car show/cruise. I don't remember anything about it except staring at its feet, but I spent the rest of my life researching Akitas.

Aussies and Border Collies were my big two. I still enjoy both breeds and will likely own both, but my interests have shifted away a bit.

As soon as I knew what a pit bull was, I wanted one. I came home from a hike a couple years ago and dad went "a guy I used to work with is in the hospital, his pit bull has been in a crate for a year - want a foster project?". Obviously the answer was yes, and she's a trainwreck so nobody wanted her. The intent really was to place her, she isn't a great fit for our household - but we love her, so we make it work. Not like we had too many other options.
I still really wish we would have been the right home for her. <3 Bloo.

I wanted a Border Collie for the longest time. Then a APBT. Then ACD.

I always wanted an Aussie. Lucy was supposed to be a Mini Aussie... not sure what happened there lol.

I've switched more to preferring BCs I think. Originally the Aussie thing was just aesthetic but I do like herders overall.

I think over the years I've wanted pretty much every dog breed but the two big ones were German Shepherds and border collies. Obviously I have a border collie now and despite him being a hot mess temperament-wise I think I would probably own another down the road.

German Shepherds I have wanted ever since my grandma had one when I was a kid. She was incredibly stranger aggressive (my grandma for some reason does not believe in socialization because she wants a guard dog), she was so loyal to the family and just a good dog otherwise. And based on research I've done I still think they would be a good fit for me in the future, but I'm holding off until I've settled down and hopefully own a place because of size and possible breed restrictions.

I also went through a phase where I desperately wanted a shiba inu. Purely because of looks but now that I've looked into temperament they just wouldn't be a good fit. And papillons, which I still might own in the future but I'm just not a fan of tiny dogs.

I wanted a horse... haha. Liked dogs but really didn't care about one breed more than another. Kinda...middle-sized and cheerful. Preferably of the ball-fetching sort.

Border Collie.
Ever since the one I had growing up, I've loved the breed.

Once I was old enough to start reading, I developed a liking for Beagles due to the Shiloh books/movie.

When I was 12 my parents said I could get a puppy, but not a BC due to lack of time for training. So I went with the beagle. I don't regret getting Oz, but I wont be getting another beagle.

I will however most likely end up with several more Border Collies lol.

I grew up with Border Collies as our working farm dogs so it didn't occur to me to want one as a "pet". I always wanted a rough collie (Lassie TV show) and a chocolate lab (from Sheila Hocken's books about her guide dog Emma) and a GSD (Littlest Hobo TV show). When I finally left university and could get my own dog I researched it so much for 2 years, only to get a Border Collie....and am now on my 3rd and 4th of the breed. I would get a working line GSD these days but not a collie or a lab.

Oddly enough, when I was VERY young, I also wanted a Siamese cat.... but it had to be for my birthday, had to be delivered in a white box, and it had to have a Tiffany-blue bow around its neck.

I was very, very odd child.

Our neighbors down the street bred dobermans and I was obsessed with them. I thought they were the most beautiful dogs I'd ever seen and had decided that I would get a Doberman as soon as I moved out. I think I would still like one some day, but breed restrictions and health issues of the breed have deterred me from getting one.

I also prefer male dogs and the tendency for same sex aggression has turned me off them.

GSDs. I can vividly picture the day we were driving home from church and my mom asked if I wanted a GSD or a Rottweiler because there were for sale ads in the local paper. Since we were replacing our older GSD who had passed away, I picked another GSD.

As an older teen, I wanted a large guardian type breed. Mainly a Fila, because teenagers make terrible choices.

Like everyone else, an Australian Shepherd. Preferably a blue merle male. I held onto that notion for a long time. When I moved out and was looking for a dog, I thought I was going to look at an Australian Shepherd puppy but ended up with Romeo (was told he was a Red Aussie). I don't want one now.

I also had a thing for working breeds I think. We had a Husky mix, and then an Akita mix, a GSD, and a working breed mix. They were all nice dogs although I did learn to deal with quite a bit of DA and reactivity. I don't think I would venture back into that group if I don't have to. I fostered a Doberman at one point and although I loved the temperament and trainability, he just wasn't a good multi-dog home dog.

As a 12~14 year old... I wanted eight Siberian Huskies. LOL. Because they ARE beautiful dogs, and I loved both Snow Dogs and Eight Below.

I no longer want most of the Northern breeds, only because I find that I love the drivey, handler-focused, workaholic types much more! Lancer currently fits the bill, besides his potential fear-reactivity that I'm still wary about. He hasn't flipped out in public with me in awhile, but I'm actively trying to avoid any situations that might switch him over threshold.

I forgot that I totally wanted a Husky too. I thought they were perfect, but I quickly realized I was only going for looks. I still think they're gorgeous be they absolutely do not fit what I'm looking for.

From ages 6 to 12-13, my only dream is life was to own a Golden Retriever. I'm pretty sure it was because of Homeward Bound, haha. That was my entire childhood though... longing for a Golden. I still have all the Golden coasters, books, all kinds of things that were given to me due to my obsession.

When I was 15 I started looking into breeds and decided I wanted an English Cocker Spaniel (show bred, because I didn't know about field lines at that point.) Then I ended up finding Brittanys and getting Rowan. When I was 18, I desperately wanted a Clumber Spaniel for my next dog.

Not long after that I really started learning about more breeds and what I like in a dog, and now here I am. :)
