If you have a "Web Award" on you site, you have likely fell for a trick Breeder Guides and Pet Portals use to increase links to their site... yes, you were tricked!

There are of plenty pet related sites who offer “Web Awards” for “Great Sites;” unfortunately these awards are for the benefit of the site giving out the award, not the person receiving winning the award.

The “Web Award” trick is very simple; the breeder guide gets as many people as possible to add a “Best Pet Site / Web Award” to their personal or business website. Usually what happens is a pet owner/web master comes a across a site that offers "web awards" to the best sites online. As the webmaster is proud of their site, they fill out the form in hopes they will be nominated as one of the best sites online. Needless to say a week later the web site owner is notified that their site was selected for being one of the best pet sites on the web! What a surprise!

Have you ever wondered about these awards… who gives them out and how the awards are won? The reason sites give out “Web Awards” is simple, to build incoming links for the “Award Giver.” The site giving out the awards usually has 5 or 6 links embedded in the graphic that link back to different sections within the site where the “Award” originated.

If you look at the site giving out the “Award”, it usually comes from a “Breeder Guide” that has little or no content and few links to major associations. You will not see a list of people who have won the award or the process of how the winning sites were chosen. The key for the breeder guide is to have more incoming links than out going ones to external site, this is why they load the “Web award” with 5 to 6 out going links to their site.

Why should you care: Google, Yahoo and many other search engines base a sites popularity on "incoming links." What this means is you are giving the "Award Giver" 5 to 10 incoming links when you add their award to your site; this boosts their popularity within the search engine at your expense. If the "Award Giver" and your site are going after the same key words, or if you sell the same products they offer... their site will rank higher than you every time. The reason is because they give out their "Web Awards" to thousands of sites, each with several links back to their site.

This is far from fair as the "Award Giver" is not giving you 5 or 10 incoming links to your site; infact they are not even adding a direct link to your site on their home page. If you are starting to feel duped... you should... unfortunately you just fell for the "Web Award" scam!

Our suggestion: Dog and Cat Clubs should offer “Web awards” to breeder’s sites that truly deserve an award for having a great site. Perhaps give out one each month! We suggest people remove “Web Awards” from their sites unless it comes from a reputable organization.
