For those that didn't know, or have never seen a Rottweiler herd before, here is a video of Lynyrd taken in April during a training session on sheep.

YouTube - CH Bernkastel's CallMe Th' Breeze PT RN herding sheep

He currently has one leg on AKC started-A course sheep and one leg on started A course ducks :) He also has one leg in ASCA on started sheep. Hopefully, I will have duck video soon!

Enjoy.

With Rotties, is it natural instinct for them to herd? Or is it trained?

Neat video :)

wow, Robin, he is just outstanding. What a nice calm steady worker. I am not sure which I enjoyed more, watching the herding, or watching that beautiful dog move so smoothly and effortlessly doing his job. :D

It is natural, Lizmo. Every one I have ever taken to stock was on it instantly. The control is trained, of course, but I don't think you can train herding.

My uncle used to be a big time rancher (he worked in OK and then at King ranch) and his choice for working cattle was always a rottweiler. Eventually he ended up with ACDs but I remember watching his rottie work. She was very impressive. You don't see them doing stockwork often anymore. I wish you saw that more.

Very cool!

I wasn't sure. I'm used to seeing Border Collies or Aussies work, and I couldn't tell with the Rottie since it's so different. I'm just now getting used to GSD working, which to my very newbie eye, looks alot like a Rottie working.

Thanks, everyone and Red..I could watch him move all day..and watch him work!

He's really come along this year...finally decided that ducks are fun!

Keep paws crossed: we have two days of AKC herding trials coming up the weekend of June 20, sheepies and duckies. Hopefully also going for RA title this summer too :)

Thanks, Grammy.

Wish I had a video of yesterday's work session. Lynyrd had a "stare down" with a ewe that didn't want to leave the feed pan...then decided he WAS the boss and went to join the others LOL

He was so proud of himself after that, strutted around going, "YEAH! I am THE dog!".. It was hysterical!
