I've been working on impulse control with Abrams for what feels like forever and we have our good days and our bad days. He's normally pretty good about it, but some times his brain just goes haywire and I have to remind him every step of the way to stay calm and wait.
Yesterday (and today!) was one of the good days! He put himself in a down/stay for his breakfast and I didn't even think to release him, because normally when I turn around to walk out of the room he self releases (even though I've been working on discouraging this, yesterday I just didn't care if he did or not.) I got halfway out the door when I realized he was still holding his self induced down/stay. I released him and all was well. He did the same thing this morning, too!
We've been working about going out through the back door calmly (and not like a bat out of hell) and he did a very good job on that yesterday and today. He actually put himself in a sit/wait to go out this morning without me having to prompt him! Whoot!
AND, I was out doing yard work yesterday afternoon and had to run a few bags of leaves to the garbage can a few times. I left the fence gate open while I did so and he refrained from crossing the threshold - he just did a sit/wait until I came back without me having to prompt him. He crossed the threshold once when I was heading back towards him and all it took was a, "Ah-ah!" for him to turn right around and head back into the yard and then promptly sit again.
Just very minor things, but I am pleased! It's nice to see your dog start to mature (just a tiny bit) and your training start to sink in (just a tiny bit).
