I just wanted to give an update about whats been happening with Bull's Eye. As some of you know, after a lot of antbiotics and a nasal discharge that just wouldn't go away, I took bull's Eye to Mid Atlantic Equine hospital where he was diagnosed with a massive sinus infection 3 weeks ago.
They put him on IV antibiotics and had to drill holes into his sinuses to flush them. He stayed at the hospital for 11 days and I brought him home about 10 days ago. When I picked him up he still had to be on 28 more days of twice a day tetracycline (50 human sized pills in the morning and 50 at night) and he had this horrific looking wide open hole the diameter of a quarter about half way between his nostril and his eye on the right side (it looked like a large caliber bullet hole --just like you said it would Bostonbanker) They vet just said to keep it reasonably clean and leave it open and it would heal over pretty quickly--I though to my self no way is this healing that fast--but amazingly it has--it is pretty much completely closed and filled with tissue now.
Because of my work hours and commute he needed more after care than I felt I could give him at his current boarding stable so I took him to my trainer's barn and he is helping me with his meds etc. (prior to this I was paying someone at the other barn to help, but I knew it was becoming troublesome) Things have been going well. The hole was weeping as it healed but the vets said this normal. Well today the hole is closed over and not weeping, but I noticed Bull's Eye has the same discharge as before coming out of that right nostril. It not heavy or anything and he us acting his normal playful food obsessed self as he has through all of this---but I am just so disappointed that anything is still coming out of his nose.
I almost feel depressed--I will of course call the equine hospital and see what they have to say--he still has 2 1/2 weeks of meds to take. Not to share too much detail but this episode has cost me $5,000 so far and now with still seeing a discharge ,ugg, I just don't know what to think. I just want him not to have a snotty nose---I am so grateful though, that he has never acted sick--but I just want this to be right and I'm feeling a bit beat down emotionally and financially...well thank for listening to my long update!

Ugh, I'm sorry this didn't seem to clear it up completely. What a disappointment. Hopefully the clinic will have an answer for you.

I wish I could remember more specifically how long Folly had his sinuses flushed out for. I think he was in the clinic for 5 or 6 days total, with twice daily flushes, then had either daily or every other day flushes at our barn until the hole closed over too much to allow it - maybe two weeks? So probably not that different than what Bull's Eye had.

The only other things I can think of were that we tested Folly for Cushing's, because the vet said that may have been why the infection took such a hold (he was negative) and that I believe the clinic checked for the type of bacteria to choose the most effective antibiotic (I think we just ended up using SMZs once he was home).

Thanks for coming back with an update. Be sure to let us know what the vet says. I'll have my fingers crossed that they can give you a reasonable answer with an easy solution.

Thanks for thinking about us--its so nice to have people to vent to LOL! I will defintely keep you posted. He did have blood work done at the hospital and sensitivity cultures to determine what antibiotics to use. The vet did say these things can be tough to treat but thought he had been there long enough an had enough flushing to get a grip on it. He basically told me oral antibiotics are not usually very effective because of how horses' sinuses are designed--so I wasn't really sure why he was put on 28 more days of oral pills--I figured it was just a precaution or maybe to make sure the drainage hole didn't get infected. I really like this vet and the hospital was beautiful and state of the art--but I have just had a bad feeling even when I picked him up that this wasn't over yet....I think there is an extreme surgery that they can do that involves opening a flap of skull--I really hope it doesn't come to that...
