Check out this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-Opm9b2WDk&feature=youtu.be

All of my friends are posting about it because the cat saves the kid. Which granted, I also think is pretty dang cool (and surprising!)

But what I am more interested in is the dog. Why on EARTH do you think this dog attacked the boy in such an unprovoked way? Do you think he believed the kid to be prey?

I also find it weird because at the beginning of the movie, the dog is clearly going for it, but just before the bite he kinda slows down and carefully sidles over to grab the kid.
Anyways, I am not at all an expert on body language, but I know some of you are, so I thought I would post this so you can have a look at it. What kind of body language are you seeing?

I guess mostly I just can't believe what I am seeing. I have never seen such an unprovoked attack before :yikes:

Wow. I thought this would be a video of an "unprovoked" attack... you know, kid making dog uncomfortable, dog gives calming signals then snaps. But holy crap that was scary. No comment. I can't see how the dog mistook the kid for prey because this wasn't a small child... though some of the body language was almost predatory.

Loved the cat. :)

Yeah, it's floating around my feed too. Pretty ****ed up. Prey drive gone haywire.

I've watched this a few times now and I still don't see even the remotest indication of the child provoking the dog at all.

I'm going to go on the mentally unstable, potentially so-called self trained "attack dog" angle?

Glad it wasn't worse.

Scary of the dog for sure

I am not really surprised by the cat though. My one cat is always telling the dogs off. Back when I had Kali, who was a bit nutty, Kali would wake up from dead sleep and go after the other dogs. Never full on attack but enough that it was a scuffle. Fiona always came flying in to break it up...and it worked. Unfortunately, if my husband happened to be separating the dogs at the time Fiona showed up, he would get bit as I guess she viewed him as the biggest threat at the time and assumed he was the instigator.

Should add, while I am not surprised by that cats actions in general, it was very lucky and random for the timing to work out and the cat to decide to react. That is something to be very thankful for.

Oh good, I was going to post but its hard from my phone.

Yeah definitely prey drive IMO. That dog got excited when he saw the kid, stalked him, and grab/shook. Classic prey drive. The hesitation was him getting in line for a good hold.

And yes, the cat was excellent.

Holy crappoli! That cat was amazing! No, that dog attacked unprovoked for sure. It was just awful. What a fantastic cat! I'd be giving it a party. I didn't get why the mother, after looking her son over, left him again by himself.

There was an article that was originally paired with the video that said that she left her son to chase the dog away as it was still in the vicinity. She was bitten as a result.

I can't imagine leaving that little fella there all alone for one minute. What if the dog circled around and came back for him?! He was probably terrified. It just struck me as weird to not carry him someplace safe or stay with him until she could flag someone down.

So scary! Including the cat, not one I would like to mess with! So glad s/he was there.

My first thought was she was making sure the dog was gone.

My dad was just telling me about this video when I came home for lunch, and he said the same thing.

Here's the article:
http://www.kerngoldenempire.com/sto...-from-dog-attack/29622/0qjoimd6WUyPi0Coy3cCwQ

The boy's mother, Erica Triantafilo, was outside at the time. She said the dog was still hanging around and she tried to chase it away and it bit her as well.

The boy was taken to the hospital and received 10 stitches. He is now home recovering.

Triantafilo said her neighbors voluntarily had their dog quarantined.

Quarantined??? That dog should be dead. A dog that goes after an adult for some reason? Ok, shame on the owners, fine, and keep everyone safe from here on out.

A dog that goes after a small child like that? I don't care if it's prey, territorial, the kid stepped on it, whatever, any dog with a reaction like that to a child has a severe temperament flaw. One in which I have zero tolerance for.

I am inclined to agree. That dog is dangerous :(

The dog should totally be put down.

I read that its' illegal to kill an animal without quarantining it if it is suspected of rabies, but that seems strange to me as you can test for rabies after killing it. Maybe it's just cheaper to quarantine.

Here is a gif:

I have seen a dog run up someone and start attacking totally unprovoked before in real life. It was very scary. It's rare but it happens. Such dogs should be put down.

That cat is awesome though.

I wonder if it would be that it's a behavioural issue thats been building for a while without being dealt with. The dog seemed so confident in how it handled the situation.
I also wonder if the bike had anything to do with it.

Go cat go!
