So on another forum Im on. there was a discussion about unaltered dogs (it was based on males, but we can use females in here too) and taking them out to places, like pet stores, dog parks, and just in general pet places, dediated to pets. What is your take on it?

I for one dont agree and see why a unaltered dog should not be going in to public, pet stores, dog parks, dog functions (like large walks, play groups ect). IMO a well trained dog is not well trained based on some body parts they do or do not have on them.

As most know blaze is unaltered, and he will stay that way. I have my own reasons, he is no show dog, or breeder. But he goes to do gparks, play dates, humane society type walks, pet stores ect, he goes anyw here I can take him. He even did a huge 6 hour walk/hangout day in Toronto on Monday, which was a holdiday and it was very very busy down at the harbour front center, there was dog things going on and humane things, and he took it all in with any any issues. even when the psyco pigeons (Im sure every one knows about pigeons in large citis not terrified of anything at all) walking up and literally pecking around his feet for food lol.

He goes to the dog park, and hangs out with other unaltered dogs there as well. granted I know these people and their dogs very very well. He really doesnt mingle with dogs there I dont know, my dog park is so big you can get lost in it (I know I used to when I first started, was lost for 2 hours lol). but he never tries to mount a dog, or pick a fight. he is more intrested in wreatlsing with his buddies, or chasing balls and rocks.

I see so many altered dogs behaving very terribly. yet if it was a intact dog, every one (Im speaking in general, not abou the forum ect) would say its becuase it is intact.

He goes to pet stores, and will sit and stay when I say so, and wont move.

I guess it just irks me when I hear often that unaltered dogs come from uneducated owners who dont properly care for their dogs, and they shouldnt be in public. if I didnt want a dog to take in to public, I would only have cats, and heck even Marley the cat comes out to pet stores and car rides lol.

I know this is long, sorry.

I know lots of dogs that do very nicely with all of their parts. Wouldn't know the difference without checking out the undercarriage...

I do see many that do not but that's likely because of what I do for a living. As a trainer I don't automatically go for the testicles but there are times where it becomes a possible part of a solution to behavior problems.

More often than not when I've seen 'issues' between ultered and intact dogs, it's the altered dog getting snarky...

As far as where they should go, excluding females in heat and males with marking problems (and yes, I know many an altered dog that marks)...they should be welcome anywhere their snipped peeps can go.

The only issue I have is unaltered dogs at the dog park that CAUSE issues. I have NO problem with unaltered dogs that dont cause issues.

The unaltered ones (not ALL of them) want to just hump everything. It gets old.

JD's first time at the dog park he spent 75% of the time being mounted by a 210 pound mastiff.

One guy brought his unaltered black mutt and he told me "I bring him here so he quits humpin everything at home."

that dog would NOT leave Kody alone. It just irritates me.

But the altered dogs that do it irritate me too. I just see it more commonly with unaltered ones.

But believe me- I have plenty of complains about altered dogs too (not specific to altered dogs lol) its the dog itself that I judge, not whether or not he has been under the knife.

Yes, I have noticed over the years that more often than not, it's the altered males that seem more insecure and tend toward snarkiness. I think the hormones can make a dog "feel" more "manly" (lol) and thus, feel more secure and less like they have to rock the boat. That's a generalization, of course, but it's my hunch.

At any rate, I don't think whether they have all their body parts should be the issue. Their behavior and how well the owner controls things is the issue, whether altered or not.

4Dogs3Cats I dont think this statement is entirely fair. "The only issue I have is unaltered dogs at the dog park that CAUSE issues. I have NO problem with unaltered dogs that dont cause issues:". Because one of my sibes who is not fixed only recently started showing aggression towards other male dogs. He has a muzzle on when he goes into the park, and he does sometimes hump dogs but i am right there stopping him.

I have no issues with them being anywhere on-leash as long as their behavior is appropriate.

I'm still a bit unsure how I stand as far as places they are off-leash. I'm probably not including places like average dog parks in my concern, just places where it is possible for them to get out of your sight. Because not matter how well they listen to a recall, we know that no dog is flawless, and when your intact dog does decide to go out of sight, there is that added risk of extra puppies running around. Yes, ideally you could say as long as it isn't an in-heat female there should be no issues but...it still makes me concerned. It's one of the things I take into consideration most as I think about a male puppy coming into my life, and how long I would wait to neuter.

Oh, and as for dog parks...honestly, as most people know I hate them in general. Yes, I would prefer that they not allow intact dogs over a certain age - say one year. Because there are often conflicts involving them, even if the intact dog's only contribution to the problem is the hormones flowing off of them. I know it will get me flamed but...yes, I'd rather adult intact dogs stay out of dog parks. But since I don't go to them, and I no longer have to work animal control at them, I'm certainly not going to push the issue.

Other than the obvious female in heat issue, I think a behaved unaltered dog should be able to go wherever behaved altered dogs can.

I wish most of the people that waste time looking for things to b!tch about would be altered. I'm so tired of someone wanting to take away my rights as well as my dog's right to keep his testicles. It doesn't matter if the dog is altered or not, if the owner is crappy the dog will be also...

A bit of a rhetorical question perhaps, but why is the female the issue? I mean, if every intact male dog out there is under control of their owner, there is no problem with a female in heat being around. Just tell the male not to breed, or don't give him the opportunity.

Unless they mean the mess. I don't see the issue if she is wearing panties and can't make a mess. I don't think I would be taking her where there are off leash dogs (or where she is off leash). But for out in public I can't see the big deal.

Other than a female in heat. I honestly dont care

If the dog is well behaved and good with other dogs (the norm for any dog event) then they have every right to be there!

I spayed kenya because i HAD TO. the shelter has a $500 fine w/o proof of spay. I also did it because shes a girl and my mom hates a mess

If she was a male and not a shelter dog, then i wouldnt have done it.

As a breeder, I want to see how my intact dogs, males & females handle themselves in public and around other dogs, the more they go, the more I know about their temperaments etc.

A rude, ignorant, and untrained dog is just that, doesn't matter whether it is intact or not. Because those types of dogs (for the most part), are owned by people that allow those behaviours and have a untrained dog.........

Those are my feelings.

I don't take Bimmer too many places simply because, being what he is, he doesn't enjoy going inside places that aren't "home" and other male dogs -- neutered or not -- just don't react well to him, although female dogs usually fawn over him even though he doesn't generally respond. He won't start a fight (unless one of his grrrls' *honor* is involved  and even then only if another dog comes into his territory) but he will finish one in a heartbeat. He's never hurt another dog, preferring to put them on their backs and show them exactly what COULD happen if he chose to finish things, but it's a situation I avoid putting him into and we're all happier ;)

I honestly don't see taking any of my three to a dog park unless we were the only ones there.

I don't take Tallulah out around people anymore unless it's somewhere like weight pull where I know people aren't going to be hateful to her. She's had enough of that and it breaks my heart and pisses me off mightily to see how much she shuts down with strangers now because of it.

Kharma . . . unless she's in heat, she goes wherever I can take her. I don't think spaying would change her personality much, lol. She is what she is.

You have to make an INTELLIGENT choice based on YOUR dog.

I wish most of the people that waste time looking for things to b!tch about would be altered. I'm so tired of someone wanting to take away my rights as well as my dog's right to keep his testicles. It doesn't matter if the dog is altered or not, if the owner is crappy the dog will be also...

It depends on the female. Personally, I don't have any burning desire to be on the holding end of a 145 pound bitch in the throes of a primitive hormonal urge, whether it's time for her to want to breed or just to be a general bitch to some poor dog who wanders up to sniff. ;)

Besides, it's just not worth the risk of there being a stray dog around.

I was talking about things like dog parks and offleash areas.

Frankly, if my dog was in heat i wouldn't WANT TO take her to the dog park and such.
theres a chance of my dog getting knocked up, and the dog park isnt fun when your dog is being surrounded and annoyed by all the other dogs

That was my assumption. Since the argument I always hear is that intact male dogs are under control/just the same as neutered dogs/won't breed without permission etc, my question was, why is there an issue if a female dog in heat is there? Just don't let the male dogs breed her - no problem.

As I said, pretty much rhetorical. We all know that dogs are going to have times where the instincts take over, especially when hormones are involved. That's my reasoning behind my preference for intact dogs of either gender to not be put in those situations. But I get it, most people aren't going to agree with me. I have no problem with people keeping their dogs intact for whatever reason they have, and I understand that many people have very good reasons for it. I just don't like the idea of the mistakes that can happen.
