we train and compete around and with intact bitches in season all the time as well. and yes it is the one on the other end of the leash that is the problem.

I may speak from a different perspective, but I attend events (dog shows) on a regular basis where there are literally THOUSANDS of intact dogs, including bitches in season. I can count on one hand the issues/confrontations I have seen in 20 years of attending such events.

The testicles or ovaries are not the problem. The one holding the leash is the problem, if there is one.

My intact dogs are well behaved and under control no matter where I take them. Point in fact, Milton just spent the weekend at the Charlotte 600 in the infield. He probably socialized with HUNDREDS of people. Big people, little people, kids, men, women, sober people, drunk people, loud people, you name it. Had a great time and made so many new friends for himself, and for his breed.

:D
Beau was fine in the ring around bitches in heat but that's a very different situation than an offleash dog park. I have never seen anything happen in the ring involving a bitch in heat. I figure the situation would've been MUCH different if both weren't leashed and the handlers were not experienced.
At a dog show, the people are much more experienced with this thing, all dogs are either leashed or kenneled. I just think that's a bad, bad plan for your average dog owner to take their bitch in heat places off leash.

Bitches in heat off lead = stoopid

I don't frequent ANY PLACE where there is a probability of offleash dogs. MPO, dog parks are just a place for something bad to happen. And perhaps my view of that is colored by the fact that I have a breed that is generally dog aggressive across the board.

I do take bitches out and about who are in season occasionally. If there is something I need to do, I don't let that stop me, but I do use common sense, a trait which unfortunately often seems very lacking in the general public.

I wish most of the people that waste time looking for things to b!tch about would be altered. I'm so tired of someone wanting to take away my rights as well as my dog's right to keep his testicles. It doesn't matter if the dog is altered or not, if the owner is crappy the dog will be also...
Well said! :hail:

I have no issues with intact dogs being in dog parks, pet stores, public places, off lead, etc. If that dog is causing a problem, I wouldn't judge it more harsh -since it's intact- than a non-intact dog that is causing a problem.

I'm on the fence about females in heat. I don't think they should be out -even on leash- since they can cause males to go crazy sometimes. I think it would just be polite of the female owner to keep their female in during that time. But I could see how if the female is under control, it would be okay on lead.

PS Laur, I just LOVE your sig photo!
Thank you! :) It took a while to get them all to pose for me, lol.

We don't have any intact bitches right now, but when we did they stayed home while they were in season. I agree that offleash is stupid for a bitch in season. Unfortunately the public is full of stupid and I've even heard stories of people bringing bitches in heat to a dog park. :yikes:

We bring our two intact dogs everywhere we bring our others and we don't have any problems. But we don't generally do much off leash in public areas. We certainly don't do dog parks.

I agree its the lack of caring of some owners, last time we went to the dog park there was a female dog that kio kept trying to hump, and im very good at putting him on lead when he is not behaving and here the owner knew his female dog was in heat and he wanted her to get pregnant. Seriously what kind of a weirdo wants there dog to get preg. to any dog in the park. I just left after telling him how ignorant i thought that was.

A well trained intact dog won't be a problem . If they are not trained and the owner is not responsible then they should not be out with others, at dog parks etc.

I don't see a problem if the dog in question is well behaved. I've never had a problem with unaltered dogs when I go out with mine . Mine are all altered but just my choice.
