This past year a female cat showed up at my stepbrother and SIL's place. My 9 year old niece started feeding it and it's pretty friendly-my stepdad even build an outdoor cat shelter (stepbrother says no cats in the house). Then a random female kitten showed up and has joined the other cat. My SIL has decided they will spay the older cat, but the younger cat is white and fluffy and will make "cute kittens that should be easy to get rid of," so they are going to just let her get pregnant because she thinks it will be good for the kids to experience that.

There are sooo many cats out there as it is, and I seriously doubt that of there is some kind of emergency during birth that they will be rushing the cat off to the e-vet. I want to say something, but I'm already the "crazy animal person" of the family, so I'm pretty sure it will fall on deaf ears. It's just frustrating!

I just don't. The irony.

I'm sorry. Family like that sucks. Shockingly, everyone in my family that's had cats dumped on them are like, rushing to the vet to get those cats fixed because, "if they have kittens, we'll never be able to get rid of them and they'll take over!"

30 cats later, they'll realize their mistake.

Ugh.

TNR the white fluffy kitten? "Oops, she hasn't had kittens yet, guess she must already be spayed! How unfortunate."

That's what we had to do with our neighbor's cats...they "liked having kittens". Then as adolescents they'd head down to our house for shelter/food they didn't have to fight over and caused all sorts of chaos.

Yeah, I'd be asking them who they had in mind to dump the kittens on, because most people who like cats already have one, or two, or three. I'd also ask what they plan to do with the kittens no one wants.

Yeah, our family is the same - hang around too long and you'll get fixed. :D Mom is currently feeding/trapping/neuter/spay/releasing 6 young semi-ferals. We'll probably wind up taking the cats, can always use more barn cats and the two we have are getting into their teens.

You know what else would be "good for the kids (and her) to experience"? The inside of a shelter. Maybe show 'em what the euth room looks like, and where all sorts of "cute" kittens end up.

(I blame the whiskey, no filter)

I think my parents did it right many eons ago when I was a cat crazy 5 year old. They went to the shelter and adopted a pregnant cat that had been there a while.

I got to see kittens happen. The cat got a great home, the kittens got to be raised in a regular household and found good homes. No extra kittens were created for me to have the joys of seeing kittens grow up!
