I took Tynan to the pet store to get fitted for a new harnass since he outgrew his. At this pet store there is a cat. Well, the cat was sitting in front of the entrance so I put myself between Tynan and the cat. I guess this cat isn't friendly because it took a swipe at Tynan!!
It got him in the eye. Then I see all this blood welling up in his eye. I got the man at the store to call the nearest vet. They were just closing up but they said I can come by right away. I rush over and they had to stain his eye to make sure the cat didn't get his cornea. Thank god it didn't scratch his actual eye. The nail shredded the edge of the inner membrane (extra eyelid). So $200 dollars later Tynan is okay. I will have to take him back to his regular vet to get a check up to make sure it is healing properly this upcoming week-end.
I did go back to the pet store with the bill. They will be covering the vet costs for Tynan's eye.
Something I don't understand, why would they have an unfriendly cat WITH claws in a petstore?? That is just asking for trouble. Or am I just crazy to think the cat shouldn't be there?

Maybe I should get puppy insurance for Tynan. In the span of a month he has had a broken toe and an injured eye.....

I am glad they are paying for it. Insurance is always good to have if you are on a decent plan. I have my two younger dogs on Petsure and I am very glad to have it.

Hope he feels better soon!

i was going to say make sure they pay the bill.
cats are tempemental beasts, so i wouldnt say not to let it be in the store, but as the stores owner/an employee i would make sure that cat wasnt sat in the doorway

Glad he's going to be okay. I do agree that if a cat is not friendly, it shouldn't be loose in the petstore.

Tynan's eye is healing very nicely. He even lets me put the ointment in his eye without putting up a fuss. He has a vet appointment this week-end to make sure everything is okay.

But I have another question I hope someone can give some information on.
His toe is still visabley swollen. He has been off the anti-inflamatory meds for about a week now. He is walking on it fine without limping. How do I know if it is healing okay? Approx. how long does it take for the swelling to go away?

No advice on the toe, but I wanted to say I'm sorry I missed this the first time around and I'm glad his eye is healing well! :)

The toe may heal up and still be slightly larger due to scar tissue. Since the vet didn't want to splint Ty and he's not limping on it, I doubt there's much more to do other than try to keep him from jumping around on it or hanging it in something for awhile longer.

What do you mean by hanging it in something?
Just out of curiosity, how do you splint a toe?

Thanks

I'm guessing it's too late to get him splinted then right?
I wish the vet would have told me it was an option.

Since it's already likely healed for the most part, I doubt there would be much point in the splint.

It looked like a pretty drastic measure for a broken toe, but it kept her from flexing it and took weight/pressure off of it long enough for it to heal properly. My vet may have been more concerned about Kharma's because he knew she worked cattle and would need that toe to work properly to do her job -- and keep her agility intact to keep her from getting kicked.
