I highly recommend The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell for an overall understanding of training, and dog behavior. She is a great writer and the book is good to read on its own. I think it's available on Amazon. Her website is www.dogsbestfriend.com
As one who is a involved with a no kill shelter and loves to see shelter adoption promoted, there is a great basic manners DVD called Behave Yourself Dog Training Video Extravaganza. It shows you how to train the basics without being preachy or boring. My favorite thing is that all dogs in it were adopted from shelters, and the trainer is from the show Animal Precinct.
I got it on Amazon. Their website is www.behave-yourself.com
I have a comprehensive training e-book on my website, www.puppytrainingadvice.com, 40 pages in all. It is designed for puppies but the same training methods apply to dogs of all ages. A DOG IS NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN NEW TRICKS.
