This might be the most generic question, BUT BAM THERE IT IS. I'm genuinely curious and interested in everyone's breeds and reasons.

Top three breeds you'll want someday, whether including or not including the ones you have now, and why?

I kind of group breeds together in three groups though.

1. Border collie or koolie
I'm pretty sure next dog is a BC. I like them a lot and really enjoy the very many BCs I know. They are neat dogs and just fit a lot of what i want. I be equally interested in koolies if they were more common but BCs are a lot more likely.

2. Miniature American shepherd/pyrenean shepherd/maybe Sheltie or pap

I feel like MAS or pyrshep is most likely. I want a smaller breed but bigger than papillons and is fluffy and also versatile. I find I love a lot of the MAS lately and am in class with them. But I'm choosy and some are really boring to me. If paps came in about 15-20lbs I'd stick with them but they're too tiny for me at this point in my life.

3. Australian cattle dog/Belgian shepherd. (Terv probably)

I really am enjoying ACDs a lot and love tervs. Once I have a household that is less fragile I'd be more open to one. Hank is supposedly ACD x chi or ACD x terrier and I love the ACD traits he has. Not so much the terrier. My friend has a neat ACD I'm around a lot and I love him. He is strong and loyal to a fault. Exceptionally trainable and they just have a little different energy style i like. But basically both breeds are versatile and intriguing to me. Won't be for a bit but I am interested.

3. Lab mix or Standard Poodle
- Fun, athletic, adorable, goofy!
 
1. Belgian Malinois: there... I said it. :s I almost feel bad for saying it because of the "so you think you want a malinois?" thing going around lately. I’m very interested in specific sports/competition (include but are not limited to dock diving, flyball, and nose work, potentially tracking and SAR... maybe/maybe not be the same Mal who competes in flyball), so I appreciate tireless and obsessive workaholics... and I'm aware that I tend to be an obsessive person who will work/train for hours per day/weeks/months, until I reach a goal that I set for myself. So I'm interested in a dog who innately loves to do the same. Size is kind of important here in both flyball and dock diving, because as much as a JRT is athletic and driven, he can’t jump 15 times his length to match with the 20 feet jumps of Mals or Dutch Shepherds. I like a social mal’s PLAY-based drive and work ethic, their immediate willingness to do things because it’s fun, and “everything in life is so exciting I must do and push everything over because excited and learn new stuff because food and toys and handler gives me party and confident and fly at absolutely everything I want to doâ€. But I also need a stable dog, so a relatively social and stable mal (whether from breeder or rescue) is greatly appreciated, life being easier that way in the flyball and dock diving crowd. “Biting this toy or your shirt or the door because it’s FUNNN and PLAYYY†is great and also means convenient tug/toy as high-value rewards. Finally, I still very much appreciate some extent of suspicion and civility, especially when I live alone and when I’m walking at night. <__<

There's a 6 month old Mal in my nose work class from Loups du Soleil, her handler is into mondio, and watching her complete excitement over everything while working makes me ridiculously happy and jealous. D:

2. Golden Retriever: Obviously mals are my first choice overall, so this is totally weird. But because of my interest in a stable and relatively social dog, in addition to being able to compete in sports (ie: flyball, dock diving, nose work) successfully, Golden Retrievers are also cut out for this as a whole, but in a more balanced way. They completely lack the defense that I hope for though (using the word “defense†and “golden retriever†in the same paragraph weirds me out), but they make it up with sports potential, fun, and everything else.

3. German Shepherd: … I admit it, GSD's are just one of those "wanted ever since I was little" breeds, so there’s my excuse. ;_; I’ll inevitably end up being involved in the IPO crowd with a GSD too. But between Mals and GSD's, I prefer Mals for the reasons above.

1. Koolie or equally as cool herding dog
- This will probably be my next dog in 15 years--I'll want and need to get away from terrier traits for a bit!! I could also see myself with a teeny smooth border collie (mix).

2. ACD mix
- I love ACDs but want a lighter built, smaller athletic dog and there are a lot of mixes that fit the bill.

3. Rat Terrier
- I just love them. I don't know if I could stay away. I just love their big personalities.
 
1. Labrador Retriever: I just can't stay away. lol Still want my petite black female. Why? Happy, social, confident, bomb proof, friendly, wiggly, ball happy, retrieving, food crazy, up for anything, water loving, physical, goof balls. Need I say more?

2. Curly Coated Retriever: After having a Chessie, I really do think I'd like to try one. They seem a bit less....intense? while still being more polite and reserved than a Lab. Michael doesn't care for their coat type, though, and neither to do I for that matter, so we'll just have to see if we can get over that.

3. Greyhound: Okay, seems a bit odd after mentioning two Retrievers, but the more retired racers I meet the more I want to have one. They're just such cool dogs. Calm, sweet, polite, yet athletic and full of pep when they want to be.

4. *cough* Okay, this isn't three....but also a Rottweiler. I'd love to have one at some point, if I can ever find a breeder that I'd like to purchase from. Much for the same reason I like Chessies.
 
1. Koolie. This will be nextdog, because I adore everything about them. I've loved every one I've met. The over-the-top energy, the vivaciousness, how bomb proof they are with people, how they can be little shits, everything.

2. I can't believe I'm typing this, but I am really digging malinois lately. This is one that I'd definitely need to put a lot more thought/research into, but the more I look into them the more I like them. The handler sensitivity is the biggest thing that would be weird for me, but it's something I could adapt to; I would just have to work on faking happiness even when I'm frustrated haha. They seem to have similar energy to koolies, but with more bite (which doesn't bother me) and more guardy which, since I'll be living out in the middle of no where and probably home alone quite a bit at night, would make me feel safer, especially since futurekoolie and Finn will be useless in that regard. But like I said, big huge "if". Just entertaining the thought at the moment.

3. Some sort of small cute thing for Cory haha. He likes cute fluffy dogs, so we'll see what we end up with. I personally don't really have interest in anything besides koolies at this point and possibly malinois.
 
Honestly I'm pretty happy with the breeds I have now so...

1) English Shepherd. Perfect fit. Serious, intelligent, resilient, bombproof, great off switch. I like that Quinn is such a great guard dog, too.

2) Australian Koolie. Crazy athletic, smart, will work until they drop, biddable but solid nerves. Ned has completely sold me. He is just such an amazing worker and will try his little heart out for me. Not a mean bone in his body.

3) GSD. Had a love affair with them for awhile, my heart dog was a GSD. A nice one still takes my breath away. It might be awhile before I'm in a position to get one, but they are definitely on the list.

If I were to exclude my current breeds, I'd add to the list either a Kelpie or BC, and a Cavalier :)
 
I feel like I need to meet more of the breeds in person that appeal to me on paper before I say I for sure want one in the future. There are really only 2 I'd say I'm 100% certain I want someday. There are certainly other breeds I *think* I'd like in the future (koolie, kelpie), but I haven't spent much (if any) time with them, haven't done enough research, and haven't talked to enough people about them to know if they're really for me.

ASTCD or ACD: Driven, loyal, extremely intelligent. Dogs I can play disc with and train to do tricks and agility. ACD's are by far more common, but I love everything I hear about ASTCD's, so they appeal to me a lot as well, especially since they are a little smaller and have a lighter build than the ACD. I love the glimpse into the ACD I've gotten with Fable (loyal and intelligent, very much a velcro dog), and if she had more drive, she'd be everything I want in a dog. ACD's really just seem like everything I want/need in a dog, and I feel like the ASTCD would be a great fit as well.
 
So mine are all ones I've owned...

1. ACD
I haven't met many but if Sawyer is anywhere close to being typical... yeah, love. He's loyal, smart, drivey, great off switch, confident, "hard" temperament. Fantastic size and adorable to boot. Just everything I want.

2. Doberman
I'm actually surprised I'm putting this on my list lol Cajun has grown on me. Again, I don't know how typical she is because she's the only dobe I know. I love her work ethic. She's reasonably drivey (seems to improve with time). Very smart and eager and just wants to please so bad. A touch of crazy which I always appreciate.

3. Boxer
They're just such sweet, bombproof, fantastic companions. So much potential too, next time I'd love to channel that drive and energy correctly from the start instead of squashing it like I did with Juno.
 
1) Australian Shepherds. Realistically, this is probably the only breed I'll own from here on out. I wish I had gotten one years ago. I don't want a large pack of dogs forever, so to keep my numbers at 3 or less, I can't foresee myself seeking anything other than Aussies out. My puppy is only 6 months old and I already want another haha. I just love them. Everest isn't really anything like Journey, but the two of them are literally the best dogs I've ever had. They're brilliant, eager, driven, focused, fun, hilarious, serious when needed but mostly just upbeat and happy, easy to live with, enough energy to do all of the activities I enjoy, the perfect size, and obviously I think they're very pretty too. They are literally everything I've ever wanted.

2) Belgian Shepherd. I am not sure what kind or if this will ever actually happen, but I've loved all of the Belgian varieties for years. I am not sure if they even suit me or if I'd be happy with one right now, but maybe years from now they'd be a good option. I love what they look like, their work ethic, lots of things. I just worry that they might be a touch too 'busy' for me. I like dogs that are just calm and quiet around the house.

3) I actually have no idea haha. Dalmatians cross my mind sometimes, as I loved the one we had. She was just super fun, sweet, eager to learn, and the idea of a less hairy dog than the Aussies is appealing at times. Maybe another Toller someday as long as I can find the type I like, but I don't think it's likely I'll get another. Maybe. I do still love them a lot; they just don't seem to fit me anymore. Too retrievery in comparison to the Aussies. Sometimes I think I'd like a nice little female Doberman again, too. From a breeder with dogs that are actually more engaged and pleasing; my least favourite thing about my Dobes is their lack of natural focus and almost inability to focus enough to learn anything. I like a nice German Shepherd as well. Once in a while a Whippet also crosses me mind, of all breeds. I love my friend's Whippet. But again, who knows. I am 99% certain it'll just be Aussies from here on out.

So really, my list should read:

1) Aussies - black ones
2) Aussies - merle ones
3) Aussies - red ones

^^ Probably much more accurate haha. And much quicker to type.

Not including border collies because even though Wilson is somewhat of a train wreck at times he literally meets everything I want in a dog (I wish he was just aloof and not sometimes fearful of people, but were getting there)

1) Belgian malinois/tervuren- Because I need more batsh*t crazy dogs in my life :p but also I want to get involved in IPO someday and I like intense, drivey dogs but BCs just don't tend to do as well in IPO (I've seen it before though!)

2) Golden retriever- Because I've never met one I didn't like and they are just happy sunshine dogs and I love them. They're a little on the big side of what I like though.

3) PyrShep- I have never met one and know very little about them but they seem like neat little dogs, and seeing Silvia Trkman's Le run agility is hilarious and makes me so happy.


Also really want a GSD because like lancerandrara, childhood dream dog, but the health and temperament issues that seem to happen a lot kind of put me off. Also size. Wouldn't mind an ACD, Koolie, Kelpie, or dutch shepherd either, but I don't know as much about them.

Whenever I see you speak of Journey or Everest, it makes me really happy. It's really a blessing to have such dogs that are so perfect for you in your life.
 
Excluding what I have:

Malinois: I love the busy. There's really nothing about them I would change. I have enjoyed the one I lived with and ones I've trained with.

Toller: I fell totally in love with the Toller I lived with, and I've really enjoyed the others that I've met. Fun, fun, fun.

Dalmatian: Drop dead gorgeous dogs, perfect size, a lot of traits I really enjoy. I've really enjoyed the ones I've trained with.


My beloved terriers didn't make this list, but I'm also very interested in bull terriers and jacks.
 
1. Curs: That's broad but whatever - a cur is a cur and if I have a single "type" they come close to being it for a few reasons. Next will most likely be another Catahoula or a Lacy, maybe a BMC or some cross of those three... but I would love to find a Mt. Cur that still has enough intact stock sense to be used that way on a farm. You hear about them here or there but for the most part they've been specialized into treeing dogs over the past 50 years. The same is true of all of the other cur breeds as well, to some extent: once emphatically versatile rural dogs, now mostly bred for hunting. The rural demographic that owns them is not really, truly dependent on livestock keeping or hunting anymore the way they once were for the most part, but hunting remains a popular hobby whereas herding, not so much.

Their hunt drive is part of why I like them even though I'm not a hunter, because it's good to have a varmint-chaser around and I am getting into shed hunting and really enjoying it, and want to work more on blood tracking skills so that we can lend a hand with game recovery once in a while. But still, overall they're losing some of what they had historically and that makes me sad, maybe because I know they're the type of dogs my relatives were using to do everything from gathering and driving animals to guarding to, indeed, hunting way back when. I guess it just means I have to be picky about the dogs I get - and there are still some Catahoulas, Lacys and BMCs being bred mainly for stock work, so that's where I'll look first since that's the biggest thing for me.

2. Kelpie: Of the well-known devoted herders these guys stick out to me, more similar in temperament to an ACD than your average BC is but still bred for work commonly.

3. Huntaway or Heading dog: Again, not one breed/type exactly, but I'm mentioning them in one breath because of their "straight breeding" (as a guy who uses them once put it to me). They're a lot like curs in some ways - enough so that I once posted a video of someone using a Catahoula alongside Heading dogs and Huntaways to drive cattle on a muster in New Zealand and all of these big time Catahoula people were overlooking the fact that only one dog in the bunch was a Catahoula - just more specialized for herding tasks.

And irresistible bonus: I like English Shepherds for a lot of the same reasons I like curs, and in fact some histories would have them sharing background.

Only three lol!

Husbands getting a corgi so I'll leave that off my list. And I'll always have a doberman.


1. I want a lgd. I am stuck on caucasaian mountain dogs. Someone had one when I joined here and I loved the dog. Breeder near me. My neighbors feed all the local coyotes with their geese and take no precautions so we have to really lock up our chickens. It sucks. When I do get my sheep dog will be here.


2. I have wanted a malinois for years to. I was hopeful after that movie came out I could find a pup someone got without thinking it through but I guess it's a good sign I've not seen that happen!


3. I really want a lab. Loved the big goofy ones I had when I was young and wish my son had that to. But then again that's not really my type of dog anymore and he has so much fun with blitz and Truman. So I dunno. ( so this may be my space for a beauceron!)
 
And not in this order...

1. Mini Poodle (i've just always been so impressed with them!) or Bichon (may a couple lately that have interested me)

2. Dogs from Sara, cause that's a breed, right?

3. Uhhhhhh....

But next dog is so far into the future at this point that I really have no idea what will happen. Also if Ryan gets a vote, he wants a Crested or a Berner.

Also, I'm really enjoying Panzer and I have liked every Beauceron that I've met so I can definitely see myself having more in the future.

Those 2 breed temperaments are really all I want. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I get the silly, cuddly, floppy hounds and the stoic presence and biddableness with the Beauceron.

A rescue greyhound is always at the back of my mind, but I don't really want 2 hounds at once and I wouldn't want to be without a coonhound so a greyhound may never happen. I also want a little dog at some point in life, but right now I like my big dogs.
