Merlin parties at the store just about everyday.. which is a combination of crazy fun and other dogs slobering and muddy paws + snow outside. So he is usually kind of a mess at the days end.

He usually gets a bath every weekday/sunday evening before we go home.
Is it too much?

I mean emotionally lol he likes baths/blowdryers, so that's not the issue. I just worry that it might be bad for his coat. He is super soft and smells good obviously lol but don't want to mess up his floof.

Are you using shampoo every time? If you are, I'd see if you can get away with just rinsing him down if he's not toooo gross ;)

I imagine like human hair you have to accept you'll also be washing the natural oils out of his coat. I don't know whether that will be a big issue though...

Bodhi is never bathed and is the least smelly of the dogs. But that is WHY Fred is bathed more regularly. Can't say there is a huge difference in their coats, but they're short coated.

I'd use gentle very diluted shampoo (or no shampoo when possible) and just keep an eye on him. If it's gets to be too much then back off a bit but as long as he's handling your bathing schedule there's really no reason to change it.

He has a puppy coat now so the way his coat deals with the bathing may change as his adult coat comes in.

What if you try conditioner washing him? Lather him up, let it sit, then rinse it out. It works great as a gentle cleanser for human hair!

Also, use silicone free conditioner, or you'll create build up. Suave Naturals coconut is silicone free and cheap as dirt. Smells nice too! :)

I would say yes, I very very rarely bathe my aussies and they are little pig pens:)

I find giving them a really good brushing, or blowing them out with my metro air force blower definitely does the trick:)

Mine usually get a bath probably 4 times a year, each season, unless of course they are REALLY nasty..''

Jynx, has much more coat than Jag, and blowing her out looks like she just had a bath:)

What type of shampoo are you using?

Do you do a full bath? I'm not sure if bathing like this could be bad for a non water breed dog, since water dogs have the special anti water grease in the coat.

What about just wiping him down with those cleansing cloths made for dogs when he's not terribly dirty? I would be worried about drying out his skin with bathing everyday.

My dogs swam in chlorine every day for almost two years, I'm sure they could have better coats but it never caused discomfort or concern. I figure that must be worse than shampoo an conditioner, maybe not?

I did however think this was asking if weekly baths were okay and I think that's far more ideal than daily.

I'd use conditioner if he HAS to be bathed that much. Logan gets bathed every 1-2 weeks. I wish i could go longer, but I'm lucky to get to 2 weeks before he gets to the point where I feel he's too gross to go in public. He's getting a bath tonight, actually.

Between running at the flyball field and swimming at the lake once or twice a week my dogs get bathed weekly. We just make sure to use a conditioner (but not very much)

I suppose he doesn't HAVE to be lol really, I think it would be fine with just a rinse or conditioner rinse if that.

I just like the shampoo and the whole process :rofl1:

I work at a dog boutique so get access to all the shampoos. We have all kinds of professional ones.. all are diluted (they come concentrated).

I'll start just rinsing him off or trying some wipes.
Dammit.. I love that he always smells like flowers!! LOL

Most show dogs get bathed weekly. Shouldn't be a problem unless you use a really harsh shampoo like dish soap, or the skin/coat is dry to begin with.

I would do a conditioner for sure though since it's so often, I do that now but for a show it's a different shampoo and no conditioner.

Journey gets bathed about every 10 days, but last time I just used conditioner as she was looking a little dry. Partly because my city is super dry, especially mid winter, but probably partly from being bathed often. Rinsing her and then just using some conditioner seemed to get her clean without drying her out though. She gets so filthy on the way to and from work and then laying on the store floor makes her feel icky too, so I kind of need to bathe her regularly. I will probably use shampoo every second bath for a while though.

I agree with the not over shampoo-ing and conditioner. You don't want to strip too much oil out of the coat.

I try to brush dirt out of my guys coats more than bathe them.

When Juno's allergies are flaring (which is during a large portion of the year lol) I will give her weekly baths and she never dries out... but I use Earthbath on her, which I wouldn't consider a "harsh" shampoo. Daily might be excessive though! I'd stick with maybe once a week bathing, and do the wipes and/or colognes (Buddy Wash has delicious smelling ones!) inbetween.
