To cut his hair or not

So, I can't decide if it's time to give Hiccup a pony cut or not. I originally planned to do it but I've developed quite a love for his fluff.

But, he gets hot super fast when we're out, especially if I don't get him in water right away. And it's a pain to give him a full bath everytime he gets wet.

So, help me make my decision.

If he is getting hot quickly, I would go for the cut. If you love the fluff, maybe you can then let it grow out more for the winter. That way you can compromise and have the best of both worlds, heath and aesthetics.

I'd hold out as long as you can. I don't know a ton about crestie hair and never groomed one, but I know with most dogs if you cut their hair short it grows back differently.

How long is the summer really hot where you are? And how much time do you spend running around in the midday/hot hot heat? If summer is going to be blazing into late September, or most of your activities fall around 1pm, I'd probably give in and cut it. But if you can wait until evening or early morning for most outdoor exercise, and by late summer it will cool off, I'd wait.

Then again, I don't have to brush out all that fluff, Do you really have to bathe him each time he gets wet? My dogs swim a lot in summer and even if I'm being responsible and not tolerating their smelliness, I only bathe them once a week.

Thanks everyone! I think I'm just going to cut it and then let it grow out a bit for winter. My biggest hang up I think is the "growing it out" period. I hate it with my own hair and I know it'll bug me with his!

But my breeder is going to be in town next week and offered to do it for me so that's great!

Talked to Crested people and overall it seems that it shouldn't damage his coat to cut. It can vary depending on the overall texture of the coat but his breeder is confident it won't hurt his.

Plus, almost all my dog stuff happens late morning, early afternoon so heat is just going to happen (I work evenings).

And yeah, I do have to bath him every time. His coat gets super gross and fully of dirt, twigs and everything else. The other dogs I don't bath often, but his coat is so completely different from theirs.

I'm right there with you! I pretty much assumed I would want his hair gone as fast as possible since I'm not normally a fan of fluff. But holy cow did I really fall in love with it!

I think he's freaking adorable with all his puff! That's why this decision was so hard. It doesn't seem to tangle easily (but does attract every type of plant)

If it was only taking care of it, I wouldn't be cutting it since it's a pain, but not that big of pain. But he gets so hot! I took him out to a field today to play with some discs and it was about 80 and overcast. He was panting and laying down within minutes.

Beanie, I have a portie in my class right now and it totally crossed my mind that I think I'll need to do that cut at one time! Cause it's super cute.

If you can't find a way to keep him cool, I'd cut it, but know it would break my heart.

If he's got the type of coat to grow in full the same as before, that's great! I think pony cuts are really really cute too. I just like having a puffball running around.

I'd pony-cut him and then let it grow back. I haven't met a Crestie yet who had a texture change after a shave.

Chop it off! It will grow back in no time. I would leave a bit of length, not total naked shaved though.

I am also more partial to the lion cut, but the pony cut is pretty irresistible.

A lot of small breeds, or toy breeds in general (ones that need grooming) this doesn't apply to. You can shave a coat on a yorkie for example and it'll still grow back in long and silky. You don't "ruin" a coat like you would say a lab or a husky. It's more like people hair.

I say cut it. Because I know how much of a PITA floof is. I couldn't ever handle Jackson's hair any longer than a tiny bit of scruff lol. Too much work for me. And Lola was the same way, that puppy fluff was awful to deal with, as cute as it was.
