I was wondering if you guys could help me out here and tell me if I am just crazy or if I'm the only one that sees aussie in Ripley [especially the head/ears].

I know he is not super obvious, but for those seasoned in the breed...do you see it? I joined a fb aussie group that said mixes were ok [posted pic of him, asked specifically...maybe even some of you are members and saw]. A little time goes by and I then got a PM from admin asking me to explain why I was there, stating they were getting questioned about my lab looking dog. I explained I felt he was aussie mix and seemed to have more of those traits, and it made sense to me to be in a group that would be more geared towards that.

Though she said that was fine, it left me feeling a little like I wasn't welcome to join in anymore, because though many were very friendly...there are obviously others complaining about it behind the scenes.

This is his sister, who I think would have been accepted without question. Though I understand there could of been two fathers at play, I just don't see it in his head/ears or his temperament/personality [a lot like to auto yell husky or catahoula when they see him...most def no husky and I admit he has a houndy body/gait, but that doesn't mean much if he doesn't behave like one imo].

I thought the group would be nice for learning more about the breed, and sharing but now I'm just feeling a little reluctant to be there because he doesn't scream aussie.

I saw you on that group. And yes he certainly could be an aussie mix. There is nothing glaringly obvious that says he can't be. Yellow is one of the most common color disqualifications in the breed so it would stand to reason that it would also be commonly passed on to mixes. and he has the moderate ears and head shape that are normal of Aussies.

With that said, I also think there are multiple different breed mixes without Aussie that could get dogs with his same look.

Riley is beautiful! I see more Husky & Lab, but, like Keechak said, there's probably more than 2 breeds in his mix.

I don't think Aussie would come to mind for me, but if you said he was part Aussie, I also wouldn't question it.

Out of curiosity, what is the focus of the group? I have joined 'breed' groups before, just to get a better feel of breeds in which I was interested. I am mildly surprised that a group would be that closed that you MUST own the breed, but perhaps I am missing some sort of reason it would be that way.

Aussie wouldn't be my first thought, but I can definitely see points that could be Aussie if that's what she's got mixed into her.

There's a Kelpie group like that. If you post a picture of anything other than a purebred, registered Kelpie, you get berated. It's odd, but I guess I can understand wanting to keep the focus of the group?...Sort of?

Huh. I was thinking that it was the Kelpie people who were so kind when I was looking into them, but that was actually a Yahoo group I guess.

It's hard with mutts. I go back and forth on Hank's breeds but I'll never know for sure. Sometimes I really see ACD. Other times I see JRT more. Most people say rat terrier x ACD. I know a similar dog that came back as BC x terrier in Dna tests. Who knows.

Personally I see husky and lab or something.

But the group sounds very closed minded to me. Seems stupid to chatter behind people's backs about someone posting pics of a dog.

It's not the end of the world...just was a bit hard to find one and when I did, I felt I was a little uninvited after invited. It's kind of like "You're welcome....[thought bubble in head, 'I'm telling']."

I thought lab too when I saw his first pic, but after meeting him I don't see it at all. Same with husky. Catahoula however, I could see as a possibility [just not the personality...his sister however, did seem to have more of that fire].

I wasn't looking to breed, or slaughter the standard with him, but yeah, I get wanting to keep it focused and that's why I asked. I'm not seasoned enough with the breed, so maybe I'm seeing something not there and I don't want to continue offending people by posting if that is it's effect over just sharing and enjoying the breed.

Btw Laurelin, I always loved Hank...I remember you introducing him and weren't quite sure it was going to work out yet. Glad to see it did, he's a very handsome guy that looks like he brings you a lot of light to your life. :)

I see husky and lab too! :0 Though it's hard to tell from this angle and one picture.

Though I wouldn't outright say, "NOPE, NO AUSSIE" if you told me he had some.

People in certain groups (um.. especially on facebook) can get rowdy and intensely clique-like with the breeds they own. I personally think anyone overreacting in such a manner is just a dick.

They seemed very casual, and many that replied said that aussie mixes were most welcome [as well as minis, etc]. I saw other groups that were very upfront 'standard to the tee only' and I respected that just fine. I would here too if that's what is wanted, but I may or may not stick around. Part of it is kind of taken away when you feel you have to hold back...I love my aussiehuskylabcata majig-mutt thing [there's no group, I looked] and I want to mark it all over like the trees he's going to when he's older.

I'll see if I can get some body shots of him later on to post. Really, it's not a huge deal...my reasons for believing he has more aussie stem more from 'who he is' than 'what he looks like,' so that could be causing me to 'see things.' :)

Thanks all, I'll post later on with some photos.

Awww thanks!

The mixes are definitely fun! They always keep you guessing. A lot of what makes me think some ACD with Hank is his type of drive/movement/temperament/play style. That kind of stuff is hard to see in pictures. Size wise and build wise he's certainly more terrier (and he's kind of scrappy too).

Yeah I wouldn't let them bother you!

It's really nice to hear that most were casual! :hail: I've joined and left a couple fb groups with randos that had this intense mentality about pure breds and what should and shouldn't be posted. It wasn't pleasant to read on my feed, so I quit them. :s One was a GSD group and another was a husky group, but I never posted anything myself...

Uh, +1 for the Hank is handsome. Hank's overall temperament (and appearance!) actually inspired me to lean into looking at ACD mixes and the like for a future dog. I kind of creep around and read everything on the forum and the BC forum.

Aaa, but there is a Lab group & forum that would welcome you with open arms. :)
I would accept an invite, who knows maybe I'll find he's more labby than I thought personality wise too. Feel free to share, I'm never too old to learn new tricks. :)

There was some heated debates [the admins seemed pretty good about staying on top of it there], I stayed away from the majority. Most were genetics, and I don't feel the need to stick my paw in that when I'm not breeding. I've seen many website forums like that [very snarky], but I'm a bit newer to the fb ones.

Hank is a very cool guy. :) And careful with that creeping, that's how I ended up with Ripley...whatever he is, it wasn't what I thought I'd take home [don't regret it though, so not always a bad thing]. ;)

Ok I tried my best, but we just barely started on a little point/click work so he's still in the mode "try everything else first, to get treat," making a still shot a little hard. I took many, so maybe one will show something obvious I'm not seeing.

His body/tail/rump seem houndy, he has kind of a aloof [think that's word I'm looking for] trot. His sisters tail curled up the same.

Anyhow, it's all fun....

Ahhh he's gorgeous! :)

Yep, Hank is not exactly what I thought I'd bring home either, he's far more terrierish lol. But it's been a lot of fun. And that's what matters.

Joined a BC group once. Said that I believe my Charlie (black and white dog in my siggie) has some BC in her. You would've thought I tried passing her off as purebred. Yeah.... that was a fun experience.

To me Ripley looks like a husky/retriever mix. But not having met here it's hard to go by just looks. Charlie was a mountain cur at the shelter she came from, then a lab mix at the place I work, but just with living her and knowing my breeds... I peg her as a Pit/BC/Beagle mix of sorts lol.
