and been rude to an employee there: SCREW You.

I have had it with being glared at, insulted, and yelled at. I'm tired of the sighs, the sneers, the pissy comments. This is WALMART. You are getting EXACTLY the amount of customer service you pay for and EXACTLY the amount that I get paid to give you. Got it?!

This is not Burger King, you cannot have it YOUR way. I have a ton of stuff to do, and I am shorthanded almost every day. As much as I would like it to be, my whole job is NOT just to listen to you bitch and moan about what a terrible job the store is doing in serving you. I have other customers than JUST YOU. NEVER in my LIFE have I been treated so poorly by anyone as I have by Walmart customers. I am sorry if you don't have what you want. I'm sorry if we don't have the size you want. I'm sorry if you stopped carrying the brand you want. Most of the time, I CAN'T do anything about it, so there's no use in flipping me attitude. This is WALMART, where the HELL do you think you're shopping????

And tell your demon spawn to keep their **** mouth shut. What kind of parent lets their 10 year old talk to an adult with so much disrespect??? You're just lucky your kid hasn't gotten her ass kicked yet by someone who was not on the clock. Because if she talks to everyone like she just talked to me, someone is gonna punch her in the face. And that's a fracking fact.

So if you walk into my store, and don't get primo customer service like you feel you deserve, it's probably because the customer right before you was a fricking douche bag who just ruined my day! If you want better service, go someplace where the company gives a ****, staffs their stores appropriately, and actually trains their employees in their job.

End of rant. Sorry to bring in my stress, but I had to unload :( and now I'm going to take some deep, cleansing breaths...

((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))

I'm sorry :( I hate Walmart (no offense ;)). Employees are treated horribly and some of the people that are shopping there are usually shopping there because.. well.. its Walmart, so that shows what kind of people you might be dealing with. They're building a Walmart where I live and I am NOT excited. And I know how you feel, my job is a lot like yours. It's like people come there angry and decide to take it out on employees becuase they know employees have to respond nicely with a smile and deal with it until a manager is avaliable

No offense taken at all, I'm not too fond of the place myself lol. Thanks for the hugs :)

I'm a supervisor, so anytime something goes wrong, I'm the first person they want to talk to >.< And oftentimes I'm telling them that I can't make it better for them, so then they're really pissed and either yell and storm off, or they want to talk to my manager... ugh. I can't stand people.

I do have some really great customers though. Most people come in, get what they want and leave, no muss no fuss, normal people who just want to get their shopping done. I love those people. I'm the employee who walks by and smiles and asks if you're finding everything ok, and those normal people make my day because they smile back and say "yeah, thanks" or "No, can you tell me where raisins are?" Why can't all customers be normal people?

Why do we service folk have to deal with the jackasses of the world? :(

I dunno, I know customer service can be incredibly trying and difficult, but it sounds like you're in the wrong line of work. Even if it's "just Walmart" I couldn't disagree more with your overall philosophy towards customers.

They freak out and get rude. Be the bigger person and maintain giving courteous customer service while killing them with kindness.

This. Doing just what they think they are paid enough for, is why, IMO, people get rude. Most of the times that I have witnessed customers being rude, was because the employee was being rude and/or not caring about their job. Not saying that is the case, just saying that is what I have witnessed, here. That goes for any customer service job.
I was always taught to do my best in any work scenerio, even if that means doing above and beyond, though, maybe it was just the way I was brought up.

I think that, to an extent, you get out what you put in. If you're enthusiastic about your job and sincerely are kind to and want to help your customers, most of the time they see this and treat you with respect, even though you might not necessarily be able to tell them what they want to hear (we no longer carry that, we don't have your size, we can order it but it will be a 4-6 week wait, etc). I can think of one lady we get in at work that some of my coworkers really don't like to deal with - she's needy, I guess is the word? You kind of have to walk around the store with her because she asks your opinion on everything and is always looking for new stuff. I really like her though - I think she's a very nice lady and I enjoy helping her out. Even if she doesn't need help with something I'll check in on her while she's there, see if I can take anything off her hands and take it up to the front, see if she's finding everything OK, etc. She always greets me really nicely, calls me "dear" and stuff, and told my manager that she "likes this one" LOL. I can totally see how people would think that she was needy and demanding, she isn't a "soft" person the way she talks, but I do really like her now.

That said, we definitely do get the occasional rude person in who is rude to us for no fault of our own. Not sure if they have other stuff going on (you never know!) but for whatever reason they don't talk to us very nicely. It's rare in our store at least (I imagine it would be more frequent at a busier place like Walmart), but it happens. Nothing you can do but smile and apologize and let it roll of your shoulders. If you're in a mood one day where you really can't handle it beg a co-worker to, LOL.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Also the comment about giving the customer service that you're paid to give rubs me the wrong way. I don't get paid very much beyond minimum wage, which I could consider seriously insulting for how long I've been at this job and how much I do there, but that has no bearing on how deserving my customers are of quality service.

I mean how much do you expect to get paid to treat people like fellow human beings? Treating them worse than that is unacceptable in my opinion.

The word "rant" is in there for a reason. I'm here, venting about it, because these are the things that I would never say or express to a customer, or even to other people I work with. I smile to a person who scowls at me, am polite at all times, leave customers with a "have a good day!" even if they're rude. The rant is just some things I have internalized from being kicked around lately. I'm an internalizer (is that a word?), and I wanted to get some bad feelings off my chest. I don't have anyone I can rant to in real life right now.

I agree 110%. No matter what your paycheck says, how seriously you take your work is a reflection of what you think your time is worth. Yeah, minimum wage sucks. Yeah, working in customer service sucks. But when you rise above that mentality, truly do the best work possible and don't let your customers see your frustration... customers notice. And some may actually treat you better.

I can understand where you are coming from. It sucks dealing with people on a daily basis, some of them are just ridiculous!

But, to say that the next customer has to pretty much just shut up and deal with a bad attitude because someone made you angry isn't right. I did customer service with cranky old people or ill people that are in a lot of pain and having trouble with their insurance or had a bad day. It's hard when you know YOU don't deserve to be treated like crap when you try to do your job, but letting it get to you doesn't show them anything. The person that made you angry continues on with their day, if you let it bother you you are the only one hurt by it. And, in this case, possibly all the other well intentioned customers you deal with the rest of the day.

I also agree with if you have a positive attitude, and actively try to resolve the problem, 'most' people are a bit calmer and more receptive. Obviously, some people are just out to hurt others. :(

I am sorry you arre having such a tough time right now! Some months are worse than other when it comes to customer service! Especially in Wa! When the weather get's bad, people get cranky. Hopefully we will see some sunny, HAPPY days soon! :)

I totally get what you are saying!

I didn't worked retail, but rather a customer service type job as a trail guide at a stable in a "resort" area. I was always polite and friendly but still had people get *extremely* angry at me because they had to sign a waiver before riding, irritated because I wouldn't let them canter the horses, irritated because I couldn't schedule my entire day around their child's nap, had parents lie to my face about the age of their children for trail rides (their own children could almost always be counted on to bust them out :D) etc, etc.

Round here, Walmart actually has some of the friendlier employees. The Target as awful service--nearly every time I've been in there wearing a red shirt someone desperately looking for help has asked me if I work there.

Hang in there!

No, of course it isn't, you're absolutely right. You can rest easy, I don't put my customers through anything like that. That's not my life philosophy or my customer service philosophy, otherwise yes, I would definitely be in the wrong line of work. Just something I wrote in a stupid, stressed out rant. Here's to hoping for sunny days soon!

Wow, I can't believe thee are people like that out there who can be so rude (well, I can believe it -- it's just so sad); I have worked as a dog groomer for over 6 years; Most of my job is customer service (especially when I worked for the busiest shop in town and it was all I could do to stay in my seat and groom; I was ALWAYS the one made to do the c/s because I was so good at it). I rarely had an issue (and when you're grooming 40-60 dogs a day like a factory line, mistakes tend to happen).
I'm surprised that there are so many people who can make your days miserable; Maybe just because it's so not me to be rude to anyone, I have a hard time fathoming how others can be rude to an employee. I shop at WalMart often and the employees have always been really nice and helpful. I've never treated them with anything but respect, and I've never seen anyone be rude so far. Although I must say, there is one cashier who drives me bonkers. She has to comment on EVERY single thing you're buying. I want to slap her sometimes so she'll shut up. Other than that... lol.
Sorry to hear there are so many rude customers in your area. I have several friends and family who work at Wal-Mart and they've enjoyed it so much they're all in steady long term jobs (including a highschool friend whose been there for ten years now, and my step-grandmother whose been there since I was just a fairly young, gosh maybe 15 years now?). Must be the differences in area! Either way I hope it gets better for you.

I've been in retail/customer service oriented jobs for far too long to be anything except super nice and courteous to employees unless they really **** me off by being rude or completely apathetic.

Rant away! C/S jobs can really bite the big one quite often, especially being at a place like Walmart. Realize that you're dealing with the people who are responsible for "People of Walmart", grit your teeth and smile.

I worked in an LA-based store loaded with not-so-cheap designer brands. I was amazed at how many people took offense just to being greeted. Sometimes no amount of cheerfulness will get you respect in return.

*pats Kenyi on the back* Been there, done that, still have to do it more than I should. Ever notice they're at their worst on Sunday after church?

There have been more than a few times when, after standing in line and hearing a customer give the check-out clerk hell over something that's got absolutely nothing to do with them at all, I've hauled the other customer up short (verbally, even when my hands were just itching to slap) and dressed them down for it.

And then there are the times when I'm stuck behind someone in line who is making everything a total balls-up for no good reason and the poor clerk, when they've finally finished with Ms. Drama, looks at me standing there with my red hair and cringes, just knowing all hell is about to break loose . . . The relief on their face when I'm nice to them and tell them not to worry, there's no fire anywhere and I'm one of 5 redheads on the planet without a quick temper is priceless ;)

So, yah, rant away, Kenyi. I hear ya.

Oh, and remember, next time one of 'em treats you like that . . . The "People of Walmart" site is all about the customers, not the employees. I'm sure you'll see a few of yours online :D

I get where you're coming from. Most of my customers are great, but there are times when I'm driven to the brink. I try to deal with it by instead of letting the douchebags ruin my day, I let my day be made by my awesome customers.

I work in a nursing home where pretty much our biggest thing is "Customer service" as our supervisor says lol.

I get hit, kicked, yelled at, called names (Sometimes in languages I do not understand), and scratched...But I still have to talk politely to them and do what they ask (If its reasonable) as pretty much my job is being a slave! I so cannot wait until my car is paid off in a year, because I will be going to school to be a vet tech and do something I actually enjoy!

My mom is one of those rude customers who takes things out on the wrong person, like cashiers and stockers who have no control over anything and don't even know what shes talking about. When I am with her I usually defend them, and tell her to stop embarrassing me. I myself am very soft spoken and I am even afraid to say anything if someone gives me the wrong change lol.
