My boyfriend and I, who are both christians, somehow found ourselves discussing whether dogs have souls...eternal spirits? What does the bible say about this kind of thing? Everything in me says they DEFINATELY DO but he disagrees, saying that is how humans are seperated from "the beast." Thoughts?

I honestly can't recall anything in the bible that addresses it one way or the other........not saying it doesn't, but I don't think it does.

Only because you had the temerity to ask;

Your boyfriend is half right. Dogs do not have souls. He's wrong about humans being seperated from the beasts by having a soul. Humans don't have souls either. Humans are nothing more than really smart apes. Souls are a notion invented by ancient religious leaders to keep the masses under control. They maintained thier power by theatening people with an unpleasant fictional afterlife.

Some of them get people to perform hideous acts of violence based on the same promise of a wonderful afterlife.

Some of them just want money.

Just my $.02.

Not being one to follow the Bible I would pay no credence one way or the other to what it says about dogs. Look how it treated women. I agree if there is a heaven and there are no dogs why would they call that paradise ? Not my idea of it. I hope that if there is something out there I meet up with every dog I have owned and loved in this lifetime.

I don't go to church and I've never read the bible but I go to a Sunday school type thing (CCD) and I do believe they mention humans being the only ones with souls. So I don't really pay attention to it, I believe in evolution as opposed to Adam and Eve. I do believe in Spirits though and that dogs and humans and every other animal has them. Of course that might just be for my own comfort.

If you think dogs have souls, and your religion says they don't, you are, IMO, following the wrong religion. ;)

It doesn't specifically say. it doesn't really clearly address that issue. So I choose to believe that they are special creatures from God (any wonder the name is just God backwards) to teach us what his kind of love really is.... what better example of true and honest unconditional love than a dog. :D

Actually...she didn't ask you. She asked Christian Chazzers (look at the title...if you don't get an invitation to a party it's rude to invite yourself anyway) , which by the above statement one can surmise that you don't believe that Jesus Christ died to take away your sins. I would guess you'd be in the camp that assumes there is no such thing as sin. Whatever. She didn't ask you so don't come up in here with your rediculous notions born out of ignorance and bias.

Anyway, moving on. The bible doesn't state about dogs having souls, but there are numerous accounts of animals being precious to God.(why else would he save every kind 2 by 2, or be mindful when a sparrow falls, or choose a donkey to talk to a man to get him to follow God?) I don't think they could say "be saved" in that they don't have the free will to ask for it. However I tend to put them more in the catagory of angels. Their choice is stictly good or evil, with animals having far less choice even then that. With that in mind, my estimation is there will be dogs in heaven. That may be wishful thinking on my part, as we're all spiritual beings so we may not recognize a dog as a dog there, just another angel. I don't know. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Well, I am an agnostic, but raised Catholic and I pondered this frequently when I was younger.

Anything that can love has a soul, IMO. Assuming souls do exist. And biblically speaking, what separated the humans from the beasts was sin, not a soul.

Also, St. Francis of Assisi (sp?) preached to the animals quite a bit. Birds, fish, the wolf . . .

When I was in the first grade, Catholic School. I asked to go in the church to pray at lunchtime, the Nun asked why, I said my dog had died. To which she replied Dogs have no souls and walked away....

No need to get testy. To her your belief is just as ignorant and biased.

Anyhow I agree with DoggyDaze but I think humans, and dogs, have a 'soul'. If you think about it you're just composed of several billion (trillions, bajillions, I don't think we have a proper word for it) of cells that are all coordinated together in a show of brilliant choreography all led by even more cells (nerve/brain cells) and chemicals all firing together to create the human body. Yet something gives you a thought process, control over the body, etc. This you could term as a soul, I reckon. And if you believe in god you can even say that he created it. Creationism with evolution if you want.

I just think it's a bunch of chemicals.
