Hey there.

I need some serious help in terms of getting rid of these tick problems, let me just clarify a few things before I explain the problem at hand.

I've had my Dog, Buddy, for about 3 years now and about 1 or 2 years ago, I had noticed a large lump on his elbow, so I did some research and found out it was an engorged deer tick. I removed the little sucker right away and I generally stopped seeing any ticks on him at all, with this exception of a the occasional tick after later months. Upon noticing each tick, I would take him to the vet to check how he's feeling and he's never shown any signs of disease or such.

Now recently, I've been experiencing a very big problem with ticks. About 3 weeks max. I noticed about 8 ticks on his body, this seemed very worrying for me and I frankly felt mortified at the fact that I had noticed all of these ticks whilst indoors.

My dog is indoors practically the entire day and he sleeps outside in a small doghouse we built for him. Now I had started to notice many loose ticks in his coat. They would become especially visible once he would lie down and start sleeping for a long time, I'd see something very dark moving through his coat and pick it off.

I had also started to notice a few ticks on the floor close to where he sleeps in the house. Weeks had passed and I have noticed ticks in our rooms. Today for example, my sister complained of a tick crawling on her arm whilst she was lying down on her bed. I grabbed my flashlight and found a tiny tick in the corner behind the closet.

So I've continued to do research and have been removing the ticks on my dog without breaking off their heads, they are perfectly alive once I do this. I took him to the vet recently and he had applied some Frontline on the back of my dogs neck. The vet claimed this would prevent any ticks on the dog for a period of one month. If this is so, then how come I can still notice the occasional tick on his body?

I'm really scared at the moment, for my family, myself and my dog of course. I'd like to get some advice on how to handle this problem and prevent it.

For the record, I do not grow grass in my garden at all. The only area which I would consider being the cause of ticks on my dog is the park, where I walk him daily.

Much help would be appreciated.

I really am not much help, I have had to deal with ticks all my life until I moved here... they used to be so bad after Dad worked in the woods they'd be crawling up the walls, and it was just part of life to do "tick checks" on ourselves and the dogs.... I always just matter of factly took them off and killed them. They don't bother me too much. Having said that, Lyme disease is not really big where I am from and I have never heard of a dog/person with it in my hometown...

Quote from Chronicle Herald:

Dr. Gould said he’s "heard rumours" but doesn’t know for certain of any confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Nova Scotia this year. He said 12 cases have been confirmed in the province since 2001, mostly on the South Shore.
So it may depend on how bad your area is? Check and see how prevalent Lyme is where you live before you panic too much… I also have never found frontline etc to work very well on ticks. I know we have had multiple dogs over the years, as have my parents whom we removed ticks from daily during the season, and sometimes we'd miss one and get one of those big, nasty milky white engorged ticks.. I disliked removing those ones... However we have never had a dog get ill.

The thing is, I live in the Middle East, in a very small country as a matter of fact. I have googled and searched. I have tried as much as I can to find information showing the chances of someone getting Lyme disease from ticks in my country, but I can't find anything.

It's just very worrying for me, I'm also very confused because I have not got a single clue as to where my dog could have picked them up from.

Let me just mention that despite the fact that my garden has not got even a tiny bit of grass, there is a very large area which has vines growing to about 10 feet long. I've noticed my dog likes to sleep under these vines and large bushes, almost to secure himself. During the period when he did sleep there I noticed a few ticks in and out of his furcoat. However, he doesn't sleep there anymore, so where could they be hiding?!

I am not familiar with the Middle East, however I have found ticks in areas where they flourish are about everywhere... If you are walking daily in a park it could be there, or in the bushes? I am not sure that way. I know my Dad picks a lot of them up working in his Christmas Trees and there is not much grass there either.

I would consult a local Health Authority about Lyme in your area....

It would appear Lyme exists there, but the incidents compared to the US are much smaller depending on the accuracy of the report.

we have a terrible time with ticks here--we have very sandy soil and they love it. Lyme disease is only one disease that ticks carry--nasty little buggers that they are.
We use a topical on the dogs, plus do checks and brush their coats before coming back indoors.
Someone here had come up with a natural tick preventative--can't remember who--maybe do a search?

Thanks for your help, everyone, I gave my dog a bath this morning and found about 2 ticks swimming helplessly in the tub. It was a bit of a relief to an extent but I know they are there.

I'll talk to my vet to help resolve the problem and I will continue to brush my dog's coat to rule out the possibilities of any ticks entering the household.

We had a really bad time with ticks this spring because it was hot and wet. We use the Advantix on Osa but she can still get ticks on her. The med is used to either prevent the ticks from biting (by paralysis/death) or if they do bite, they die. Osa was bit a few time this spring but none of them ever filled with blood. I even ended up getting bit by one.

If you can get your hands on a insect killer called "Seven", it works great on ticks. You can get it in a powder form and just sprinkle it on your outside vines and underneath them. It should kill the ticks. I would also clean out your dog house as they may be living there.
