We have had a very bad time with tics this year. We have been pulling plenty of normal sized tics off all summer long. The final straw was this AM when I found a number of super tiny ticks on Ditte's ears. They are SO small that I had to use some high powered magnification just to ID them. She has quite a few this time and does not like Mommy and Daddy picking and pulling her ears AT ALL .

I need a solution. We use Sentinel for heart worms and fleas but that stuff isn't good for ticks. Keep in mind these dogs are SMALL at 3 and 7 LBS. We probably need to treat the yard or the play area but with what??? Is there something we can put on the dogs that is safe that would repel the tics?

We never have had even one flea thank god but these ticks are making me crazy.

Any advice?

I think the best thing would be to purchase some Nexgard. It is an oral chewable that was recently put on the market. It does adult fleas (not just a flea steralizer like Sentinel) and ticks. It initially was only labeled for one type of tick, but now it is labeled for more. I hate topicals and have heard of great success with the Nexgard. That is likely what I'll keep my dogs on if ticks become an issue (they are also on Sentinel).

If you also want to avoid topicals, there are tick collars on the market that may work? Seresto collar and Preventic collar comes to mind. The Seresto collar is supposed to last for 8 months.

To treat the yard, I think there are just generic bug/flea/tick sprays you can buy from Home Depot and the like.

I'm super ultra paranoid about ticks due to tick born diseases. Although it isn't likely....it still worries me.

We use bravecto because we have SO many ticks in Kansas in the summer. It works so well that I frequently find ticks on myself after hiking, but never any on Hugo. It's an oral pill that works on 4 different species of ticks and lasts for 3 months. The company brags about the fact that it tastes so good your dog will happily eat it, but Hugo doesn't like it so we end up chopping it up and putting it in his food.

I gave Ditte a bath with some Sentry Pro shampoo this afternoon and she has a lot of ticks on her. They are all very tiny and most are on her ears and some on her legs. We removed about a dozen from her ears alone. I am going to try something on the yard and we may need a trip to the Vet for that Bravecto. I have ordered a pair of Tick Twisters but they are being shipped in from outside the country so it will take a few weeks. She is sitting in my lap as I feel for them and remove them Such a good trooper. Keep the advice flowing.

What about something like Vectra? I've had extremely good luck with that. I was using the Preventic tick collar before, but it only killed them and didn't repel, so I was still picking off 20+ ticks every time we went for a walk and finding dead ones all over my bedroom. So if you have a bad tick problem, I wouldn't recommend it. My dog also got Lyme (possibly twice? still not sure about the second time) while using it, because it just didn't get them off fast enough and we found plenty embedded.

I haven't tried the Seresto or Nexguard. I'm kind of over collars after my first experience, but I'm intrigued by Nexguard and might try it next tick season.

I plan to do Nexgard for mine if we ever have another flea/tick issue like we did earlier in the summer. I just can't stand topicals, and I don't want the dogs to wear collars, either. I picked up a sample for each of the dogs, but I'm saving it for a rainy day. Lol I've just heard so many good things about it.

I have been SO happy with the Nexgard. All the ticks I've found on my dogs this summer have been dead.

Does it repel them too? Or just kill them after they're on the dog?

I had a lot of issues with a collar that only killed them, because we were getting tons and tons of dead ticks all over the dog and the house.

I use Advantix, but it hasn't really worked for me. Every time we take our dog hiking he seems to get ticks for days after and they are still alive. Thankfully our dog has short, tan hair so its not too hard to spot the ticks
